Got one free from a guy on Freecycle a few years back. I'll have to get it out and try the settings out with some keyboards maybe. This came in a big box of guitar leads etc and also was amazed to find a CV to Midi converter unit under everything!! So glad I spotted his advert offer, there's some nice people out there.
It really is. Going with the same settings just doesn't cut it. One day I'll have to restart my online stuff on this channel now that my life's gotten a bit calmer.
@@soundbelch1600 You made it look easy, I'm sitting here like "SIMPLE I will use the very same 4 pedals which I have right here" and it's.. not Slowdive, not even close. XD
I hope to replicate this sound (to some extent) using a Boss RV-500. The reverb options on that pedal have quite a lot of EQ and dampening options, should I just leave everything flat or are there any setting that you would recommend?
@@soundbelch1600 I'll try to approximate the the whole sound. The RV-500 can provide 100% wet reverb into two parallel delay lines but I'll need to use other pedals for compression and chorus/detune. I just wondered how to approach the reverb sound. I assume that a hall mode will work but I'm not sure how it should be EQ'd.
@@ahumanonplanetearth I believe the original patch is based off a plate. I wonder if you could get close to a chorus sound with the shimmer setting on the RV-500.
@@trickfall8752 Should there be a high octave effect in a Soft Focus emulation? I've noticed that the new Catalinbread pedal has an octave effect. I did experiment with the RV-500 and came up with some effects that I liked but I'm not sure how close it was to the Soft Focus patch.
@@trickfall8752 Interesting, I'll have another mess around the algorithms and settings. It's easy to go totally wrong with the RV-500 as there's quite a lot of options for most effects.
There is a switch on the back for either -10dB or -20dB. Yours may be in -20dB position? Although it is also true on my unit that the Soft Focus is not as strong an output as other patches for some reason.
@@soundbelch1600 by the way I just scored an fx500 from Japan for about $100 including shipping which was the lowest I could find at the moment, but I would love to know how to do this with plugins as well for VSTis. can't wait for the processor to arrive!
Sure. All the delay settings for Soft Focus are in the FX500 manual if you want to download it. The effects chain goes like this: compressor at the front --> reverb set for 3.4s of reverb, 100% wet --> delay with 250ms of delay on the left channel, 380ms of delay on the right. Set for 72% feedback, 70% wet mix --> Symphonic chorus.
Got mine on ebay like 15 years ago and it has so many other great presets like lush and sitar one, it was just a matter of time for companies to work on one special preset, there are also the loveless one and the one Spacemen 3 used. In fact, pedals from the very beginning emulated big and expensive amps overdrives and so on ... Nothing new
@@cwmoriarty It's fine. Dude has his opinion. I used Valhalla Space Modulator for the Symphonic effect. It's free if you hop along to Valhalla DSP's download section.

Seems so simple, but actually getting that orchestral sound is always harder than it seems.

Great breakdown.
I plugged it into my amp and its volume is very low. I don't know why.

Gracias, thank you
Very cool
Nice indeed
which plugins did you end up using?
Klanghelm's DC8C compressor
Longsound.de's Microverb plugin
SDelay (native Audiomulch plugin)
Valhalla Space Modulator (free to owners of Valhalla plugins)
soundbelch.blogspot.com/2017/02/the-yamaha-fx500-soft-focus-setting.html
Think simple plugins. Any simple compressor will do, a simple reverb and a simple delay. Space Modulator is free if you buy any Valhalla plugin.
@@soundbelch1600 right on, I'm gonna try to get that space modulator, it sounds amazing. thanks for the advice!

@@alexyang8440 It's a cracking plugin. I would thoroughly reocmmend buying Valhalla VIntage Verb. $50 for that and you get Space Modulator.
And now there's a Soft Focus pedal. 🤑
Hi! Can you tell me what the two delay settings are?

Perfect. Thank you. Programming the dual delays into my Timeline.
Now the hipster expensive guitar pedal companies are releasing this patch in $200 pedals

Which is not even remotely close to the real patch
That’s sad
the catalinbread pedal is nice in person but doesnt sound EXACTLY like this
Go back to the drawing board. You didn’t even get close.
Happy to be shown something better by your superior self.
@@soundbelch1600 Pay no attention to the haters. Which plugin did you use for "Symphonic"?
