    I also loved my TFA experience. It was super difficult but I learned a lot and developed myself as a teacher and leader. Great video!

    Thank you for posting this- was thinking/ debating about TFA. Leaning more towards waiting until next year. After working as an SLPA and getting beat up most days, yelling, and chasing patients. I realized that I never want that tough of an experience again. Shout out to all the educators, teachers, & therapists you’re so loved, needed & appreciated❤️! Side note- you’re handsome..☺️

    Also. Some people are not meant to teach underserved kids. Me for example. I failed. I was not prepared. Maybe it was on me.
    The teaching style I learned from TFA was hard for me to implement. The coaches tried but grew tired of not seeing much progress. I was fired twice
    from two different schools in the first year and quit the program. This was 11 yeara ago and now I am managing tech stacks and enterprise software for fortune 500 companies.

      5 weeks of training is not nearly sufficient. The first year of teaching is survival of the fittest as is. So donot feel bad about not becoming a teacher.

    I have a question. Was teaching math your first preference? I am currently being put in a school placement where I'm expected to teach math. However, my first preference was ELA. I will be reaching out to see if I can change my teaching role.

      I got my degree in chemistry, so teaching science was my first choice. In general math, science, and SPED teachers are highest in demand but yeah you could definitely reach out to them and see if they can change it

    Thank you for the informative video!Are you aware if a certified teacher with a masters in education would still need to complete the graduate program/courses?

    • @ZachRana1
      @ZachRana1  Год назад

      I can’t say for certain because credentialing requirements are different depending on the state you’re teaching in.
      Most likely you would be able to skip most of the coursework but might need to take a credentialing test

      I was in TFA in 2015. I already had a bachelors and masters in teaching. I was in Nashville and the program had a partnership with a local university. Even though I was a qualified math teacher, they wanted me to get another degree in computer science. That would mean spending lots of money for another qualification when I already was greatly needed as a math teacher. It makes me think was it perhaps a way to get money for the local university...at my expense?
      The tech teaching job I had to accept couldn't work as the school could not get any properly working computers or laptops and I felt I had to quit.
      I now teach math and other subjects at a small international school and I'm very happy there.

    What costs were required of you during the program?

    • @ZachRana1
      @ZachRana1  11 месяцев назад +7

      Great question! Room and board were covered during summer institute, so the only costs I paid were my tuition for my credentialing program and my masters (the masters was optional). I was also getting paid as a full time teacher and with the TFA scholarship + Americorps, I think I spent around $8k out of pocket on my credential, and another $7k or so to complete the masters. I lived pretty frugally my first two years of teaching and basically spent all my savings on my credential and masters, so I didn't have to take out any loans!

    Do they pay while you are training?

    • @ZachRana1

      No they didn’t pay us during training, but they did provide us with housing and food. We started getting paid once we started work at our placement schools

      They gave us housing during the summer training, but after that you're on your own lol. I decided to room with someone I became friends with at the training, so we went apartment hunting together.

    There were like 6 or 7 teachers with TFA come to our small town school district. I worked with 3or 4 of them. They were very snobby. When I say “snobby”, I mean they thought they were better than the rest of the teachers. Even the students would say this. It was almost cult-like. I went to the house that they all lived for dinner one night. I honestly felt disrespected.
