Regarding Palantir Scryer, you can safely put points into it, as long as you put the points into it last. That way he will get maddend after his DMG skill and only his normal attack will have the potential to hit yourself. And since madness disappears at the start of the turn you're also safe from madness in the following turn. In a way this even makes him more resilient against madness from Sauron for example because if he already maddend himself, Sauron cannot apply madness to him.
The only reason to potentially not run it is if you have his relic as that will the also have the potential to hit his own troop.
And I did test this, I have been running him ever since 2.0
