From a 130" Screen On Your Face, To VR, To Gaming - Nreal Air 6-Month Evolution

- The topic of both VR and AR headsets has always been complicated. This is one of those cool ideas that in my opinion has struggled to take off because of poor implementation. HTC bet the company on the Vive, but it was a tank to wear, and the idea lost its footing in all the extra computing you needed to buy. Meta also bet the company on a much smaller headset, but then still can't convince anyone that the metaverse is better than the real world.
Really the only concept that has succeeded has been to give you a large screen on your face. We've covered some of the solutions from TCL and Lenovo, but so far the only company that has succeeded in this market is NReal, but mainly because it balanced the looks with functionality that continues to evolve through software. I've spent the last six months using the Nreal Air and there's a lot to discuss, especially after their recent announcements at GDC, which they've partnered with us to look into. I'm Jaime Rivera with Pocketnow, and let's dive in.

You mean Meta.
@@PSYCHOV3N0M you are such a good consumer.
@@technodrone313 Google is practically the same
@@oo--7714 Yep. Well getting there at least
Total #TBT! GDC was such a blast. Thank you for working with us to make it awesome!
ICYMI we're XREAL now! Nice to re-meet ya.
Please review the Rokid Max glasses and do a direct comparison vs the Nreal Air glasses.
Thank you in advance.
This review was the deciding factor on why I will be getting these glasses. Jaime is a gamer like me and I can tell he enjoyed his experience
Thank you for sharing your thoughts
I love mine. I was hesitant but they have been 100% worth it for me.
do you feel annoyed with the cable?
nope, they're great for travel or when you're seated. Cable is not a big deal. @@atiq8987
This looks and sounds awesome. Officially interested!
Interestingly enough, I watched this video with my Xreal Air glasses. I love them and use them daily.
I agree with Jaime as I watch this video using my Nreal Air. I find this to be really great for gaming. They are light and comfortable for hours of gaming!! For desktop use, the text can be little fuzzy with a weird double vision when using dark mode. Hoping for a resolution and possibly even refresh rate bump in the next gen.
Steam deck gaming?
They're great for Steam Deck gaming with one caveat.
Firstly, they provide a larger OLED 1080p @60Hz virtual display which uses *less battery* than the Steam Deck's screen (which turns off when the glasses are plugged in). They can also do the "golden 40Hz".
The one caveat is the Steam Deck's battery management starting somewhere around 30% to 50% battery level turn off video to the USB-C port depending on how fast it estimates battery drain.
BUT, you can get a "charge & play" adaptor like the Nubia Redmagic Gaming Dock Adaptor which lets you use the glasses while the Steam Deck is charging from a USB-C PD power bank or wall charger. That fixes the issue.
Generally, for most people starting at full charge down to 50% is how long they usually play in one session, but some folks do want more time to play while using the Airs, so the Redmagic adaptor provides a solution.
Overall, gaming with the Airs on the Steam Deck is *awesome* ^_^
@Uge Plex what about HDMI input? I think nreal's HDMI adapter couldn't power the glasses and be powered at the same time?
@@CampGareth Technically with a redmagic adaptor its charge can be extended (not recharged while playing but drained much slower for many more hours of use) bc the glasses would be powered by the redmagic not the HDMI adaptor. But, there are 3rd party HDMI adaptors also that use USB power and can work infefinitely - though they won't always carry Audio to the Airs with aome devices and bluetooth headphones/earbuds/speakers would be needed in those use cases.
4:21 whats the converter they used to connect with the steam deck while charging?
Just picked up a pair second hand for 250 and once nebula for windows becomes a little more stable this will absolutely change the way I study as a student.
250! Wow, you had a bloody good deal there - I snagged a used pair from CEX for £330 and I was extremely pleased with that (CEX does give 24 months warranty on all hardware, which is amazing), but - 250! Wow!
@@jimdoom2276 Right! Crazy deal that I couldn't pass up. However the 24 month warranty is really nice to have too.
Are you using it as a day-to-day tool / gear (at home / work / or EDC when out n about) outside of travel ?
I do. Noting it's a 1080p screen so for some larger spreadsheet action I have to switch to a 4K or UW display, but the majority of my daily tasks are handled through the glasses. I do it because it's comfortable for me, has eased neck/shoulder strain a lot, and I can use it while in public or on the go with privacy (I use it with Samsung DeX).
I also use them for gaming, and watching streaming media - especially while doing chores (dishes, work around the house, laundry, etc.).
Travel (planes/trains/automobiles as a passenger) is also great with the Airs.
And I've used them as a viewfinder for my camera for GPS direction mapping and live translation of signs and menus while walking around in Japan, and to see chat and my feed while testing livestreaming.
Seriously, they have so many uses.
@@UGEplex thx for sharing!
Really cant wait for the day these kind of glasses can be totally wireless
wow never heard of these but really interested now!!!
You should also check out the new Rokid Max glasses.
This speaks to the product's value that you were willing to travel with it and integrate it into part of everyday life. This doesn't feel like another gimmick.
Wait only mac gives the option for 3 screens?
Def I want to be able to move the screens without going into nebula. Move the screen to the top, side, etc and not just straight frint
How do they compare to the rokid?
The new Rokid Max ar glasses is far more advanced then the Nreal air glasses to be fair you have to compare Rokid air with the Nreal air which there is plenty of videos on RUclips demonstrating the difference between those two.
2:50 Jaime looks like Schwarzenegger's Terminator movie! 😂
Mine keeps losing connection with the steam deck
It is impossible for me to say your name as fast as you do. I've tried it
Now that you've worn them, can you explain why most people look up at the sky when using them?
It's kinda like sitting front row center of a movie theater. You can center the image but it takes some folks a little adjustment time (a day or two) to get used to looking forward-center of a large screen - virtual or not. A friend has a 200" projector setup with seating allowing for dead-center viewing and I still see some of our friends tilt their heads up until they get used to it. 🤷🏻♂️
@@UGEplex I wonder, if thanks to phones, laptops and tablets, we've all become used to looking down at screens
@@faethe000 I have no doubt many folks have. But being used to it doesn't mean it's good for neck/shoulders/spine (at least until we evolve/devolve to adjust to it lol)
@@UGEplex No, what I mean is that people might be looking up when wearing the glasses in an unconscious attempt to be looking down at the screen.
Partnered
Vs rokid max?
Good idea for a comparison actually
Nreal air ar glasses been out over a year now their competitor Rokid will soon be releasing their 3rd generation Rokid max ar glasses Nreal need to be focusing on their 3rd generation glasses and offer the Nreal air for a discount price if they plan on competing in the ar space.
4:31 the yawn
LOL! They look like Elton John glasses on everyone's face!
Interesante
We are getting real close to the Buddah Box from South Park. Now people will be even more anti social.
Nintendo take note for Switch 2
i want ar glasses but they're just too expensive.
I know $350 is alot to ask for but I feel it is a discount when you see what you get for the price
No pun intended
You make it sound like if they're the price of a car.
Get a job and save up slowly.
If you're too young to get a job then do some tasks that people will pay you for like mowing the lawn or something.
@@johnnymonsters9717 $350 isn't a lot.
Rokid Max glasses are more expensive.
this looks really good, but I still will avoid any VR/AR glasses/kits like fire.

I bought all the cables adapters beams dreams and I couldn’t get the glasses to do anything or hook up to anything. This is a hoax and a scam
40 FOV? The quest pro is going to be better than the Nreal for work. Apple will launch their product this year and thats when you will see the same things i am using the quest pro for in coffee shops today. 40 FOV wil not be good enough. You never talk about what is already out that is better. Would you disagree with me that immersive and meta workrooms is a better working point than inreal is now? you would not compare that. if the usecase is compared to what is available, why did you no compare? The result should be reported that its not a product that you can actually woek with compared ot a quest pro or the upcoming Apple headset. Software wont fix a 40 FOV
Exactly! Why ride car, when you can just fly around in a private jet. It's obviously better.
Bulky + expensive < Normal glasses + affordable
I bought a pair and returned it 2 days later, because I hated how tight and uncomfortable they were on my nose, and behind my ears...and I couldn't adjust the field of view...I'll get version 2
