As a local I would recommend that you look in the Greenbrier section of Chesapeake if you are staying overnight. It is safe, cheaper, and has plenty of places to eat. As for parking there is a parking garage across the street from the cruise terminal called Town Point Garage. It’s $13 a day but fills up quickly so get there early. You enter from Main Street.

Thank you for posting this video - it is very helpful. I cruise out of Norfolk in October. Hopefully, things run much more smoothly by then but if not, I’ll definitely follow your tips. Will probably Uber in and be dropped off down the street. Thanks!

My family was on that same cruise :) We had a check-in time of 3-3:30 I think we got on in less than an hr, had to wait 20 mins for our 4 yr Olds covid test. We had a blast!

I am a local and work right across the river from the cruise terminal. Based upon the reports of the bus transportation melee and the problems at the terminal I would suggest that a possible remedy would be to stay at Renaissance Hotel in Portsmouth and take the ferry across to Waterside District. I guess if you have good rolling luggage you could get there and avoid the fray.

If coming down 95 south to 64 east, always check your route 664 Monitor Merrimac vs Hampton Roads Bridge tunnel.Sometimes it's actually quicker depending on traffic. Also consider Hotels near Norfolk airport if you need a rm night before your cruise.Daily parking for your car at Norfolk airport and a taxi/Uber directly to and from cruise terminal could help you avoid traffic and crime in the cruise terminal area of Norfolk.TSA is securing the airport parking lots. When you park at lots for the cruise terminal, criminals know,no ship in port, cars parked may be vulnerable, especially if it's a lot known for cruise parking.

Thank you so much. I have heard so many awful stories about the parking lot for the cruise. We will stay at a hotel as close to the ship as possible and take an Uber.

You can't fault the cruise port for your debarkation woes. That is all on the cruise line. Glad you did find a few things positive. And you can't compare ports that work year round to one that is open seasonal.

Not sure you watch whole video. The cruise was lovely. The parking situation is a nightmare. It us run by the city of Norfolk that has a contract with carnival. Last week there was vandalism to several cars and accident to 3 cars by a security agent on the port parking. The city and Carnival needs to work on getting out the kinks in this port.

I am in Va Beach and on our local new this morning a passenger just getting off the Magic found her car broken into. And she parked at the lot you did. That’s bad PR for Norfolk. I cruise on Carnival too but didn’t get any last minute deals. But I did get a great deal for Sept when things re-opened from Covid. I am taking a 16 day from Seattle to Miami. $605 for ocean view room.

take the shuttle services from the airport or hotels to avoid all that parking at the terminals

Hotels that provided parking were more than our cruise. Lol. But airport would have been a good option

I’ve cruised out of Norfolk over several years (probably 20+ times). Also Baltimore and Canaveral. It’s ALWAYS a problem in Norfolk. Went out on May 21st. Worst experience EVER. From the time we got in line to get into the parking lot to the time we got on the ship - 3 hours.
We were told various reasons why things were so bad. But every time there is some excuse or another. We’ve done this so many times that the wife and I always make a bet on the drive over on what time we get on the ship and what excuse they have this time.
Would have been quicker driving to Baltimore this time.
Maybe someone should organize a charter bus starting in Richmond to Newport News to Norfolk dropping us off in Baltimore at the terminal, with round trip pickup when we come back.

It is a shame. Hopefully carnival will step up and work with the City. Years ago I took a Princess bus from Baltimore to a ny cruise. It stopped in DC then Baltimore. Easy peasy.

I don't do cruises, but I'm a local, and frequent downtown. Definitely avoid Cedar Grove. It's one of the worst parking lots in Norfolk. There used to be a HRT bus transfer hub there, but they had to move it for safety reasons. Things may be different 5-10 years from now, but I doubt that parking lot would be any better this year, than in the past. There are several garages in downtown; which is flat, compact(only about a mile across), walkable, and fairly safe. Downtown has made the news for violence a few times last year, but it was mostly late Saturday night bar fights, which wouldn't affect you as you walk from wherever you park, or were dropped off, to the cruise terminal. I have felt less safe in some theme parks, than I do in downtown Norfolk.

Have you ever cruised out of Charleston SC? The parking lot is right at the dock/pier (on sight) and someone comes and gets your luggage.
