fascinating to think that one of the factors that gave Portugal such a headstart in World trade in the medieval times were them not hunting down the dtemplars, but rather offering them asylum in exchange for their knowledge and skill.
Here are a few points to complement what you wrote: First of all, the Knights Templar were established in Portugal in 1120, thus shortly after they became a "thing". They were great allies to Dom Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal (crowned in 1128) because, amongst other reasons, of the family ties with his father, Count Henry, of the Royal House of Burgundy, and were instrumental in the formation of the Kingdom of Portugal, where they were awarded substantial areas in the newly-formed kingdom. Secondly, by the time the first voyages of discoveries had started, in the early-1400s, the Order of the Temple had already been absorbed into the newly-formed "Ordem de Cristo" or Order of Christ, created by King Dinis of Portugal, a century earlier. The greatest instigator of those first voyages, Prince Henry the Navigator, was at the time the Grand-Master of that Order. Thus, as you can see, the Templars had been in Portugal long before the Age of Discovery had even started, and they were not a "foreign" religious and military Order at that stage.
Indeed. The Portuguese were way ahead of their time in medieval times, I feel blessed being Brazilian and being able to share my culture with a little bit of portuguese influence
@@ebanydwayne4941" ... They couldn't keep it together [...]" What are you going on about?! The Portuguese had colonies in India (Goa, Daman, and Diu) until 1961; in Africa (Angola, Mozambique -- two huge areas of sub-Saharan Africa -- Guiné-Bissau, S.Tomé & Príncipe, and Cabo Verde) until 1975; in Indonesia (East-Timor) also until 1975; in China (Macau) until 1999... and Brasil -- a huge territory in South America -- until 1822, the year that bloody traitor, D. Pedro IV, (D. Pedro I of Brasil) sold us out by declaring Brasil independent, thus forfeiting all that Portugal had invested in that huge colony, a country that so many Brazilians like to refer to as an "Empire", when Brazil has never had an Empire but rather was part of the Portuguese Empire for more than 300 years, instead! Absolutely outrageous!! If you were right about what you wrote, ie, that "They couldn't keep it together [...]" it would have been about the fact that Portugal, simply because of demographics, did not have enough manpower to govern/control such a vast Empire -- a fact that its enemies took full advantage of! Plus, calamities such as 60 years of Spanish rule, which created the opportunities -- and the excuses -- for our enemies to attack our homeland and colonies, including Brazil; the French invasion, which was hugely costly to Portugal, in more ways than one, and caused the King, the Royal Family, and the whole Court to move to Brazil (or "to flee", as some of your compatriots shamefully like to say); the civil war, which pitched D. Pedro IV against his brother, D. Miguel -- and the whole country with them; the 1755 earthquake that devastated Lisbon and was extremely costly for the country (and look at the quality of the buildings that emerged after the earthquake if you were ever to visit Lisbon!); but above all, the 1910 republican coup d'état that triggered the decline of Portugal as a colonial power and as a nation, which the country is only recently and gradually emerging from! PS -- Concerning your previous comment " [...] with a little bit of portuguese influence": A little bit of Portuguese influence, you say?! You have over 200 million Portuguese speakers in Brasil, of which a vast number bear Portuguese names and surnames -- many of them direct descendants from the first colonists; you have a country that benefited enormously from Portuguese know-how which was responsible, at least partially, for Brazil's XIX century naval might, one of the world's greatest, at the time, until your very own late-1800s republican coup d'état; your economy benefited enormously, from the first century of independence onwards, from the countless coffee plants and sugarcane farms which the Portuguese introduced in Brazil; your beef, and dairy farms, many of them started by Portuguese families... and you call that "a little bit of portuguese influence"?!! How extraordinary!

I don’t wanna be one of those comments, but holy crap, that whole mansion was for masonic meetings (for real) and it was magical. I remember years ago when I went to visit it, I was down that tower/well and I reached my hand to one of these little holes you can see in the wall with water. I did it twice. The first one it was empty, and seconds later, it was full all of sudden. I also cannot forget exploring the gardens and entering in a bifurcation on one of the hills; sitting on a bench inside, everything dark, you could only hear the soft drops coming out the lion-shaped wall fountain. Wow. p.s: sorry for my english, I was too excited writing this sdkskfkdkf
When J. Paul Getty opened his Museum of Antiquities in Malibu, Ca. in the seventies admission was no charge, BUT you had to mail in for tickets. That kept the feeling of being in a true Roman Villa and you could enjoy each room. He didn't want it to be an LA Museum day care centre for children dropped off, or crowds of people thinking they were at Disneyland. What would work at this site is if tours could be conducted by people versed in the cymablism, history, and nuances of the site. Heeey. I remeber this tower from my dreams. I have never been there and now is the first time I see it. But I was walking on those stairs in my dreams in some sort of uniform with white gloves. Thank’s BBC for this video. It is as beautiful as I remember. ❤️
I had a recurring dream for years where I entered a random stairwell that went down into insanity. The hallways were like that of an underground psyche ward, with mad scientist, military, and government personnel types moving between the rooms which had double sided glass showing the experiments and "patients" from the hallways. There were heinous monstrosities, human torture/sacrifice, freakshows, demons etc... As I worked my way farther down into the installation, I started to realize that I was being chased by someone or something. I kept taking any door that was open, which all contained stairways reaching downwards. I eventually made it to a deep endless pit with rough cut stairs leading down, which looked just like this. The deeper I got, the older and more decrepit the stone and stairs. Eventually I ended up at least a mile under the surface, frantically scrambling down the Neverending stairwell into the depths of the darkest dungeon yiu could imagine. I would eventually come across a doorway out to the ground level, where a gorgeous mountaintop, peaceful meadow, envigorating waterfall, relaxing beach, or enchanting forest scene sprawled all around me. I returned to the recurring dreamscape for years before finally deciding to translate the dream on my own. I have never had it since, but wow this gives me the creeps at how close the feel is to that dream. I realized that I was running from myself, or my shadow self, to be specific. The dream was about depression, self sabatouge, and the potential depths of madness. Always at the bottom, was a light shining through a doorway leading me back up to peace and serenity. That light was Mother Nature and her healing power. I haven't thought of that dream for years. Thanks for reading.

By the time we were out from this dark labyrinth again, the park was closed. but we enjoyed the last hour with no tourists. btw, always carry a cellphone inside the dark labyrinth, because you will never be able to get out, without any flashlights..
@Evi1M4chine Maybe they do a final check around the place, or maybe they dont, but I guess we were out of the park too early in time to have the title "lost men in caves".
I loved that the guide talks portuguesese, the original language of that place. That place looks AMAZING!
"Homenagem à história de Portugal" - commendable how it's not a parking lot nowadays
I was there last year. Good memories.
Portugal is fascinating!

ngl thought you meant Frank Sinatra owned an inverted tower
mary smith lol I read that as Sinatra too
Me too
Umm great acoustics?lol
mary smith same here
Yup!
A linda vila de Sintra perto de Lisboa, a vila é admirável e tem quintas belissimas de visitar e a Quinta da Regaleira é um dos locais a visitar .
Loved my visit here especially during Covid days.
I have been there 3 times and I want to go back. Every time I find something new
This is beautiful i hope I can see it for myself one day
Been there on a school trip 2 years ago, I was completely enamoured by the whole place (much more than I was with Palácio da Pena honestly)
There's a similar structure in Orvieto, Italy called Pozzo di san Patrizio which dates back to the 16th century
Thanks for adding value to the comments Nicola leading me to something new to learn.
probably both constructors were Masons, hence the similarities :D
@Fart Squirrel well yes Thats what i was refering too , the ones who built it were probably Masons as well
The architect of many of the sites in that particular area was Italian.
Theres a place like that in EVERY place on Earth!! they now call themselves freemasons.
I am British but live in Andalusia Spain .i work i portugal alot .It's beautiful. The north is so green and stunning it's such a kept secret.lisbon and Porto my favorite Euro cities
isso tudo é mentira. Jesus é Deus, todo o resto é mentira
Sintra is gorgeous 👍👍❤❤
Before Portugal become Disney for adults we could go anywere without crowds. When i was a kid i remeber visit that place in a school trip and we are the only people in there... Maybe its because i were a kid but thay place look way more magical deserted...
I totally made the journey completely backwards, starting the chapel, then "walking on water" and ascending the spiral staircase!
Que lugar incrível!
Looks amazing.
Video by Fernando and Izabela - brilliant!
Sintra holds so much magic ✨
Meus amigos me enviaram fotos desse lugar cheio de História e parques maravilhosos!
Sintra é muito bonita!
Sintra is just amazing 🥰🥰
Excellent thanks for post
How fascinating. Such an unusual creative architectural idea this is.
Omg I had memories of a small cave with lights and I could never remember were it was, now I do!
Love this type of portuguese neomanueline achitecture (check the Buçaco Palace aswell) :( shame most of the country didnt followed it massively
I was there in 2017.Awesome place
I don’t wanna be one of those comments, but holy crap, that whole mansion was for masonic meetings (for real) and it was magical. I remember years ago when I went to visit it, I was down that tower/well and I reached my hand to one of these little holes you can see in the wall with water. I did it twice. The first one it was empty, and seconds later, it was full all of sudden. I also cannot forget exploring the gardens and entering in a bifurcation on one of the hills; sitting on a bench inside, everything dark, you could only hear the soft drops coming out the lion-shaped wall fountain. Wow.
p.s: sorry for my english, I was too excited writing this sdkskfkdkf
templar promotional video. That being said, lovely architecture indeed, and global contribution
When I visited it felt like a damn Dark Souls game. My favourite is the hidden alchemy lab on the roof
The place is incredible, though it DOES have that "Disneyland" feel to it!!!
This is what Annihilation Tower in my imagination
I live near Sintra but never got the chance to visit this particular place even though I’ve always wanted to.
Definitely will go there after everything eventually goes back to normal.
The history of the land and its people has me far more interested tbh.
Que excelente voz tem esse senhor !... 🥰
Onde é que estão os "Portugal caralho!!"
Esta en el pueblo de SINTRA en Portugal
Lovely reminder of a visit I made a few years ago, plus interesting detail, thanks
There's an "inverted tower" from the 1500s in Orvieto in Umbria, Italy as well and it's called "Pozzo di San Patrizio": ruclips.net/video/5TvXoxo2yUs/видео.html
Such a beautiful and unusual place.
The history is fascinating, as well.
I read "Santa's mysterious inverted tower" it definitely promised a much better story
I read SINATRA 🤭
@@coryhobbs5386 actually... I see quite a lot of logic in that. Sinatra, Elvis, JFK, surely there are some mysterious inverted towers for them
I visited the site a few years ago and was completely enchanted. A fairytale place, you can spend hours in it. Shame I was not conscious of all that is said in the video so I didn't put so much attention to some details

Wow. I was just in Sinatra visiting the Pena Palace and Moorish Castle and didn’t even know this was there.
I’ve read Annihilation, and I know not to trust mysterious inverted towers.
What u mean? I'm curious bro!
I was looking for a comment about Annihilation
ALL the thinking of the masons is "inverted"
He started talking about darkness and light and I was like NOP
Peter was crucified on an inverted cross
Incredibly interesting. Thank you
Belíssimo sítio.
Piece of art beautiful building
I love Portuguese architecture, beautiful like the young Portuguese women my heart would fawn over, many years ago.
Just fabulous and mostly unknown!
Heeey. I remeber this tower from my dreams. I have never been there and now is the first time I see it. But I was walking on those stairs in my dreams in some sort of uniform with white gloves. Thank’s BBC for this video. It is as beautiful as I remember. ❤️
What
Ben Jens what what?? I had a dream about this tower and now I saw it in video.
That sounds scary
The Portuguese army's ceremonial uniform has white gloves interesting
What a lunatic
Great! Best Regards from Portugal!
I read Shinra mysterious inverted tower... I thought it's a part of ffvii remake footage
Breathtaking ❤
I watched too much of THE WITCHER.

I tied this to assassins creed xD
try playing the game or reading the books. the tv show doesnt do it justice

@@kiranx12 Music, video and topic is Assassin's Creed but Sintra sounds like Cintra a city in The Witcher universe.
I love the art and the architecture. It is always a joy to explore what our imagination coupled with exceptional talent can accomplish. 🌺
