I was just today researching the Swan series of Yachts and I can say I have sailed maybe over 3-4K miles with John Bailey in the late 90s early 2000 and I can say that Avista sails like a dream in any conditions. We clocked 16/17 kts surfing the waves crossing to Belgium and at no point did I ever doubt either the Yacht or John’s ability as a captain and patient teacher to the many newbies who had the opportunity to helm such a wonderful vessel. Many years later in 2017 I plucked up the courage sold my home and bought a 15m Burma Teak beauty in Samos Greece, I invited John and his wife to feel free to take Christina out for a holiday should they wish. I was saddened to get a message from John that he had a Brain Tumour and was at a point where he could not move and this was the last I heard of John Bailey. He inspired my to follow my dream and I thank him for that because without the selfless encouragement of a great teacher I may have missed out on the most wonderful experience of my life tasting the freedom of the wind, Ocean and that feeling that your really alive and not just existing. Thank you John…. I sold my Christina and now I’m considering to buy a Swan 39 or 41 at some point having just started looking today. I’m Happy I’ve found this interview and hope some of John’s other lucky crew find this video clip

“It’s a boat you can have a love affair with” wonderful quote, liked him the moment he said that.

thanks ... yet looking at the two carefully... both appear to be identical .. clocks... I know some folks have two clocks mounted for some good reason, like knowing who's getting up or to work at what time.. you sure one's a barometer ?

At film time 7:18 .. John is shown is his rustic glory, sipping and looking pensive.. while to his right hang a pair of clocks.. does the need for two clocks say something about time and up-tightness or is someone just keeping track of another favorite port..

Canyon Haverfield these are one clock and one barometer. like most yachts do have.

Canyon Haverfield They both look like clocks. One reads about 6:15 and the other 7:15. I vote for local time and GMT. In Poole, England, an hour difference is reasonable.

      That makes sense.

One is set to Zulu time (also known as Greenwich Meant Time or Universal Co-ordinated Time). The other is set to local time. The reason they are an hour apart from each other is because the local time is British Summer Time, one hour ahead of Zulu Time. The difference between the two times is used to calculate longitude when away from land. On the other side of the saloon appears to be the more usual set up of clock and matching barometer. Sometimes you will see two clocks and a barometer mounted on one panel.

I maintained one of these for a few years but never got to go for a sail on it. It is a shame you do not provide a bit more detail on how it sails, which is the most essential part of the boat.

Hull Keel and spars are OK - all the systems (eg electrics, plumbing etc) are shot and need ripping out and redoing from scratch and cosmetically terrible as well. I bought similar 38ft S&S design. 19 years on hull and spars still completely bullet proof. Sails like a dream.
