Also, the animated series had many creative species (even serpent dragons) but they didn't include them there? Like Deathsong, a great antagonistic dragon, Speedstinger, nonflying but fast, Singetail, another dangerous species, some kind of Skrill for Thunder. After what Race to the Edge gave us these designs are boring.
Yeah no hard agree. I really like that we're getting dragons that draw inspirations from different cultures across the globe but I would have loved to have a bled between that and old familiar faces.
They are trying to connect them to irl creatures today as far as evolution goes while also trying to connect some to stores and pictures from different cultures.

As a Chinese person, I actually liked the way Jun ended up bonding with Wu and Wei and her interests in mysticism. She also reminds me a lot of one of my closest friends. Chinese still follow superstitious traditions of the past so I'm not surprised if anyone started leaning to Western beliefs as well or instead. A lot of Chinese stories are based upon becoming a better person. When Jun figured out that dragons just wanted genuine respect like the old days, that brought me so much joy. Respect is very much a large part of a Chinese household and disrespect often led to many issues in a few myths. I expected her to be yet another "smart Chinese girl who's good at maths and science" or "overly-superstitious to the point where it ruins the plot" but the "smart guy" trope ended up being more of Alex's thing and her interest in mysticism is not much more than an interest. (I also wish Wu and Wei as well as Feathers were more serpentine because I love snakes)
I’m Chinese but I might of forgotten but I don’t think two-headed dragons means rebirth nor they ever existed in Chinese culture. I don’t want to argue but I think June is still quite annoying and her character design is creepy. You can have your own opinions though!
The insistence of all dragons having 4 legs is really upsetting to me, because while its obviously not representing historical dragons NEARLY as well as it should be, its not even true to the series. Honestly, im just getting into httyd, but even in the FIRST MOVIE they show a 2 legged dragon and also blatantly legless dragons in the book hiccup reads! I would also argue that along with wu and wei and feathers having no legs, plowhorn (being obviously very bug inspired) should have more that 4 legs
I love Alex so much, she’s so relatable and has similar quirks to me- I don’t care if this show is kinda bad, I love her and Feathers. Her and Feathers meeting felt like whenever I met my therapy dog for the first time, and I adore it.

As a Chinese person, I have no issues with Jun being into more western traditions and magic. Heck! I know more about western culture than my own. Less happy about the weird design choices regarding her appearance and dragon. Like seriously? Wtf is it with her eyes? Do all fictional asians have to have long over exaggerated eyes?
I think I may know what they were going with for Thunder. It is about Semi-Feral Horses en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semi-feral . So my theory is that Thunder is like a Semi-Feral Dragon that thanks to the parent who has ties to Toothless carried that trait through his bloodline. But it is just a theory I have about Thunder you can take it with a grain of salt if you want. I was just sharing my idea.
I just wish they were more scientifically accurate like they were from the first movies/shows because it would help to add proper arrow dynamics, biology, and behaviors. I will admit I’m not a huge fan with what they’ve done so far, but some show are like that, bad in the beginning but pick up in the end. This may sound weird, but part of me hopes the show doesn’t get cancelled, because maybe we may be able to see/get more information about things like stories about Hiccups kids, and maybe even how New Berk looks now in the show or relics from the past. Maybe this show even finding the Dragon Eye or gravesites or something cool like that. I’ll admit this show DOES have potential to get better and draw us in, but we don’t know yet until they decide what they will do next.
I personally don`t mind spin off series, especially if that series has something new to offer and the idea of dragons having to navigate a modern technological world sounds awesome. however, this show kind of feels like it has an identity crisis. It wants to do its own thing but at the same time realigning too much on what made the original HTTYD movies good.
I actually really enjoyed the show, so it's nice to see someone who isn't trashing on it! Also, my sister is autistic and I have anxiety/OCD, so it would be really cool if that one character has autism!
I have never felt more called-out then when you gave your description for Alex. Minus being a super-hacker (and the rhetorical question bit, I think I have a good understanding of those, at least 90% of the time), that felt so relatable to me. I have never been properly diagnosed with anything, but I highly doubt I am neurotypical.
This is just a theory of mine, but I think many of us might find it so important for Wu and Wei to have two riders because that was the situation with Barf and Belch. I don’t mind Jun riding them alone, but an enby rider on one of the heads would also be really cool. Maybe that them and Jun would switch head from time to time? Since Jun loves both of them equally I think that would be the best way to go, so it doesn’t seem like favouritism. If you have any ideas on that enby rider, I’d like to hear them!
It was honestly a let-down, but not as bad as me and some of my other friends were expecting. The blatant parallels in the show threw me off and disgusted me a lot, they’re copying down a scene when they could build something more organic and new. I wish they called back a lot of dragons from the original films, I do understand evolution and all but a lot of them look COMPLETELY different and it makes it seem like a whole other universe entirely, save fro a few details that connect it to the original films. I don't think the dragons this series evolved from the ones of the original. I think they're species are more like close genetic relatives like how in the Netflix series they mentioned how the Dramillion and the Changewing are distant cousins.
Pretty spot on! They could go far with it considering they didn't have money for this series so the animation is poor unlike rave to the edge. People wanted a good future spinoff and they are trying to fulfill that. As far as the unearned dragon relationships. In the movies it goes from war with dragons to friendships with them in the 9 reals its easier cuz those dragons don't have the beef with people their ancestors did. So it does in a way make sense.
I was always pretty open minded about Nine Realms more because I simply figured "eh, they grew with their audience and now theyre gonna try and bag a new audience" and didn't think anything more of it. IDK if its because of that, but I still feel pretty okay with Nine Realms even though I have little desire to watch it myself. But it is nice to see it has some up sides even if it does feel like they refused to put in the love and effort that made the original HTTYD movies so good.
in my opinion it doesn't make much sense if so any sense to me on how thunder would be existing over a 1000 years later because toothless was actually the last night fury and the only furies left that weren't died out or hunted to almost extinction was the light furies and they were only white and had no black in them (refering to the fact that thunder was two coloured). Im not a scientist or something like that and im not 100% sure but from what i understand, toothless is connected to the lightning clearly as we gathered in the last movie and his genes passing through to where thunder's fire or whatever is fully lightning. That would be more as if it was more of an offspring from a skrill and that wouldn't make much sense or how any of toothless' genes would pass on for so long since his kids were only half and half night fury and light fury and because of that i think his genes would've worn out in the blood line enough till this time for thunder to 1. have lightning power and 2. have black and white colour in him. Now this is just what i think from watching a lot of videos about the og and the nine realms so correct me if im wrong. Though i understand that of course they might've just wanted to make a little series of a gang of kids befriended dragons and stuff in the modern world i dont know to me it just doesnt make much sense at all.
I think that Tom earned his bond easier is because like dogs if we left them in the wild then brought them back to society they would remember based off of genetics if that makes any sense
I haven't seen the series (and I don't want to seeing all this), but the call back in the end feels very half assed tbh. It's obvious where its from, and it's nice it doesn't automatically imply a romantic interest, but it's just not done right (in my opinion). Also, I love that you do these vids!
You know I watch the whole thing just recently and after seeing your video I have to say I have actually did like it. The animation yeah I can see what people are complaining about but this is way more cheaper than making a whole entire movie that's cost millions to make, so I'm not too mad about that. The story I do think it was a little bit Rush with some of the characters I think we just had a couple more episodes it could have easily been more getting to know each character a little bit better along with their dragons, but I am happy what we got from the six episodes. Lastly I do have a few mixed opinions about some things but it was still good to me. I can understand that some people would complain about some of the carers feel like rip off of The originals How to train Your dragon characters but personally I don't really complain all that much about it since they did it differently but try the same thing, if that makes any sense. Like when Tom and thunder eat fish nuggets, some people have complain about that because it felt like a rip off of hiccup and toothless eating a raw fish. Personally I don't really care about that because when you look at the differences besides this nuggets and just regular raw fish there are a few differences between the two that makes a little short story of them eating together different. But that's just one thing many people complain about of feeling like a rip off. Anyway I really enjoy your video here as I'm definitely subscribers to you. Keep up the great work you do 😁👍
The answer is no. There is no other answer. The premise, the dragon designs, and the human characters are all garbage. Thunder also looks awful and inbred, which does make sense, since he probably is. There's no charm. There's no sense of wonder. The only dragon that looks like it belongs alongside the HTTYD franchise is the Plowhorn, whose design is actually pretty good.
I don't think I'm going to watch season one, as I feel as if Dreamworks is trying to milk one of it's most successful franchises as much as possible. However, you have convinced me to try season 2 when it comes out to see if it still has that old HTTYD charm.
My concerns started when the character models looked worse then a show that first released half a decade ago and 2nd red flag though a minor one was a pink eye color because httyd as unrealistic or extreme as it got it usually made the people models A realistic and B mimic there dragons to some extent this did neither
Idk. I watched the whole season. Well some people like it or not. But I kinda like it. But I still like the wholesome moments. Some of the scenes make me laugh so hard. And I like it shows the reference of the past how to train your dragon franchise. So whether you like it or not people.
The reason why there arw not really any darker colored characters in httyd is because it is in the viking era. Vikings thought to be or depicted as fair toned with mostly light colored hair, so the show was just being accurate. The only reason the nine realms as other races is because it is in a more modern era now, not a biking era There is very little evidence that there actually were vikings that were not white
I wouldnt say its the worst, but its not the best... animation had several scenes where it was not lip-synced. Animation itself felt sluggish in quality at times. now the main problems for me.
Problem A) designs and characters...
Feathers design was a BORE, like super dull. Though the shy girl was the only one to make me laugh.
The main kid, how do I put this nicely, was a brat. Yes, I said it, and we all thought it. Okay, there were times where his character was seeming to develop before it got yeeted. Now I dont mind Thunder's design, but maybe fix his face, it should be more like toothless tbh, but thats me.
The kid with Snotlout's Build, had Fishlegs almost EXACT personality. But his dragon was good in design, I did like Plowhorn. Plowhorn felt like a properly thought out dragon, She clearly belongs in Boulder Class, and seemed to be the evolved branch of Gronckles.
Wu and Wei's rider, meh, she could do with, idk, a shred of individual personality and not just be there as a space filler. And her dragon is the only Cultural themed one, like, what? I dont mind a cultural theme dragon, but dont make it A) stick out like a nadder in a sheep herd against the other dragons and B) Make it the ONLY one and try to pass it off as "yeah, thats httyd worthy"
If they show more dragons trying to escape to the surface, I do hope they take the dragons from the series and think more of how they would evolve. (Deathsong, Whisper death, speedstingers, Armorwings, Bonenashers, and even some from Rescue Riders would be fun to see and help tie Rescue riders more into the httyd universe, Such as Agro and Cutter)
The mother to the main kid, she was okay. Now if they make a season two, have her play out somewhat like Jim Lake's mother(troll hunters on netflix), Debra was well written and played a semi-key part in the end of Troll Hunters, no spoilers here. and I feel if they drive the story right, Main kid's mom could be a big key part in the future. Like, what if she ventured into a cave, Cave in happens, uh oh, wild dragon (a future version of the Rumblehorn, bc why not?) and have her see this dragon who is scared as she tries to understand why it is, and over the course of maybe two episodes? she bonds with it, the dragon not allowing anyone near it exact her and she trains it like Stoick did Skull Crusher (understanding that the dragon was warning them). tbh, would be dope. Then the reason why the cave in and the dragon was scared would be due to the tunnels causing lava to rise up or the ravine or whatever it is become unstable due to the tunnels, bc lets face it, that place gotta be unstable now.
Problem B) STORY... Whoo moma, here we go.
I didnt really like it. It did just barely enough, I dont mind the refs they make, but episode one, polar bear incident. It gets mentioned over and over in ep 1, never to be spoken again after wards. The ending where the mother may now know of dragons intrigued me, giving me hope it can improve. but to put the main reason I didnt like the season 1 story. It played like the one episode of defenders/riders of berk, where a bunch of whispering deaths, and one mad screaming death, burrow all under berk. tbh, berk story arch of the deaths burrowing was better than a whole season build up to the main baddie dragon. The dragon bonding between Wu and Wei, and their rider was, bland. not really HTTYD worthy. Thunder and Main kid could have had mooore of a bonding sesh, but Feathers and Plowhorns bonding made sense to me and was done okay.
Now, dont get me wrong, one season to get a story done can be tough, but Race to the Edge shows its okay to drag a story on for multiple seasons, as long as you can transition the story like yak butter on hot toast, smoothly. If season 2 comes out, heres a few ideas and points I like to see hit;
1) main kid mom pieces things together, goes to cave to see what main four is up too and to see if she is right, while kids try to plan on how to hide and prevent discovery of dragons. 2) Thunder spooks main kid mom, mom runs into a tunnel, cave in happens, she is trapped. Thunder, being smart, sends camo Feathers to secretly bring kids to situation. 3) The main kid mom finds a dragon (possibly evolved Rumblehorn) in a state of panic, hitting the walls and making the cave-in worse. Now mom has to try and calm the dragon down to save both herself and the dragon. 4) After getting free, her son has to reason with her to keep the dragon's secret. 5) Dragons freak out, trying to get to the surface, sinkholes and caves in happen alot, effect of baddie tunnel dragon's tunnels. The base is now sitting on a possible honeycomb and has become unstable. 6) Kids and now mom must stop the dragons from getting out, and stop the land from collapsing due to all the tunnels. 7) End the season with the rival getting suspicious of the kids and the mom having heard the rival plan to go into the tunnels and find out what's down there, now having to stop them with the kids and dragons. Allowing another season to possibly come off this with mom rival coming back with new invention/evidence of something big. but thats me. I'd flow out my ideas/points in story more, but I dont wanna make this anymore longer. Overall, okay show, could become great.
That is a really gross design for a Chinese dragon. They just took the European swan lizard design, gave it two stereotypical Chinese dragon heads, and dunked it in the water. Clunky and bizarre.
Is this made by the same studio that made HTTYD? From what I've been able to see, Thunder is effectively just a recolour of Toothless, which makes it really confusing that he comes across so clunky because they could have just recoloured the original model and reused that instead of making all new models.
I saw this and I was like WOW, they released a new show to the dragons, that was my childhood, 5yo me got one ep. Per day...turns out they just released more trash, that makes me sad😢

Hi new here. So I can respect your opinion for this show, how you have your negative thoughts but you are okay with the show. Personally, even if a lot is true, I truly love this show. Some things maybe were force but it is a series on a streaming service; some shows are shortened to fit. Basically, this series answered my question from the last film, and it answered very well
The whole idea of this is a bit weird, and everything feels rushed and not original anymore. And I don’t like the idea of them being a lot of years in the future, it could have been like 50 years maybe more but I hate that we won’t see hiccup or any of the original characters again, and everything feels so un earned and cheesy , I also feel like the character designs are really crappy and the animation is really stiff . Yeah sure they tried but it feels like they put very little effort, it feels like they only want money now and by doing this they might not be able to continue becsuse of unhappy people and lack of attention the show would be getting.
Animated people of color always getting their dark brown eye colors replaced either by more “white people” eye colors like blue, or by weird stuff like this purple eye stuff. I’m half Chinese; not a fan of that. Not sure what might be said by someone who’s “fully” Chinese, as much as that matters with regards to mixed race people.
i had better or high hopes at some point i was even hoping they never continue on httyd i wanted it to end at the 3rd movie it was a perfect closing even during the special winter video. it was just a nice addition nothing wrong but i rlly wish it ended there instead they had to continue the series with horrible budget i mean this is dreamworks creators of the many trilogies and hidden gems. some people say they dont mind the animation maybe bc it was it wasnt far off similair to the series but i compared them and just somewhat i prefer the original series. this one simply didnt live up to my expectations or hopes i was hoping instead of this animated mess they would continue the dragons book a documentary like for dragon species because there is so much more to know about dragons lets make it entirely scientific why not but then in the end we have to deal with this. some peope say the show will take off to be better and tbh to that i say lower your expectations we have s2 coming and they pulled out razor and skrill means this is a trump card of some sort to make old fans comeback to witness it and they very likely continue it which now makes no sense at all i thought we all said the dragons have evolved into new species but nvm that at all since skrill and razor didnt change at all now does it.
I would say as a poc, i am tired of shows made by white people feeling the need to give their brown characters bright eyes or hair for no reason other them to look ✨magical✨
The overwhelming amount of white people in the movies are due to the setting of the movies being the medieval times with Vikings as the main cast. I would rather have historical accuracy with the setting over shoehorned diversity. The only person from a non-Viking area in terms of blood lineage in both the How to Train Your Dragon books and the time period of the films is Alvin the Trecherous, who lead a faction of Roman soldiers at some point in the books. Even Byzantium is mentioned in one of the other shows. They most likely never traveled there because of money would have been needed to model an entire city and design soldiers in Roman armor. It would have been easier and cheaper just to pallet swap the armor on goons to Gronkle Iron than create the entire Roman army.
Honestly your thoughts one this season is my thoughts on the show itself, other than season two which was really questionable, its honestly not the worst thing but the they can deffinitly improve and almost everything they've given us here, honestly it's embarrasing how singular teens on a fanfiction platform can write a better plot and characters than a team of professionals but it all boils down to them just doing it for the money, i do honestly think if they tried to stand on something themselves, as they've tried it and it works way better than the carbon copy the first season was, they might actually be somewhat of a good show, the few things that do irritate me arent bad enough that i dont want to watch it as i've been watching the entire show which is weird considering i was watching Star Vs before but completely stopped so i can watch this show, but i have formed some sort of a soft spot for these characters, and id love to see something actually good come out of this show. This video was a long time ago so its probably useless to say this (I also most likely don't have room to speak here but oh well) but I'll do it anyways Ive watched the entire DTNR series and loved it I liked the characters and stuff although I feel the same on Thunder and Tom's relationship. The others earned theirs well Also, on design I'd say I like them all. Although Wu and Way (please tell me if I spelt that wrong. If I did I'm sorry) could've been so much better. I feel like the gold ruins it. Its mixed horribly with the blue and red in my opinion. Spoiler Alert It gets better in my opinion. They find the hidden word has other realms (hence the 9 realms) but, unless the one episode I didn't watch (since it had Hulu subtitles and I can't stand them) covered like half the series, then there was a LOT of off screen stuff

I think the lack of diversity, racial and otherwise is because the films take place in 700bc Scandinavia, there wouldn't be diversity. Its not an issue for the films because its not realistic
Honestly, I have a long list about all of the complaints and questions I have about the whole HTTYD franchise, so be prepared: 1. I was really confused when Toothless didn't come back after Hiccup gave him his new prosthetic tail, would he have came back even if Hiccup didn't find him? If not, I'll hold a grudge against him for who knows how long. If you know the answer to this, please tell me because now I'm questioning if Toothless is selfish to leave his best friend and soulmate behind for a female dragon and to live in the Hidden World, without a goodbye. 2. In the first movie, Toothless only has 2 side ear nubs, but as he ages, he gains 3 small little ones a little more under his head. That's how it's like in the 2nd and 3rd movie. But I'm the epilogue, 10 years later, he still only has 5 ear nubs on the side of his head. I didn't pay attention to the Light Fury in the epilogue, but she might have the same amount as we last saw her as well. Did DreamWorks forget to add extra ear nubs or age or is there a reason why they didn't? 3. Why does the Light Fury have only a total of 4 ear nubs? Sure, she's supposed to look feminine (Which is why they scrapped the concept Light Fury design, which was actually very creative and cool, and didn't look too feminine that it looked unnatural.). I mean, look at Stormfly and Meatlug! They're both females, and Meatlug was even mistaken as a male at first because of her looks! So unless it has to do with the differences of the two subspecies, Light Fury and Night Fury, or about her feminine looks, how would it make sense for her to be the same age as Toothless with that number of nubs?
In my opinion the Dragons in the show are well... Thunder is a bit to goofy looking with his water balloon head and giant feet but I can see what the creators were going for with his design. Wu and Wei have a really dumb looking design. I feel the cultural inspiration feels way too forced and why did they give a two headed Dragon one tail. Plowhorn actually looks alright although the tail looks a bit out of place. Feathers looks really nice and has a cute design and is by far the best Dragon in the show.
I don’t understand why plp have problems with the diversity inthe original httyd, like its set on north europe during viking era, how is it supposed to be diverse, it would break the immersion if you had latinos, asians, africans and native americans walking around in Berk

Chinese still follow superstitious traditions of the past so I'm not surprised if anyone started leaning to Western beliefs as well or instead. A lot of Chinese stories are based upon becoming a better person. When Jun figured out that dragons just wanted genuine respect like the old days, that brought me so much joy. Respect is very much a large part of a Chinese household and disrespect often led to many issues in a few myths.
I expected her to be yet another "smart Chinese girl who's good at maths and science" or "overly-superstitious to the point where it ruins the plot" but the "smart guy" trope ended up being more of Alex's thing and her interest in mysticism is not much more than an interest.
(I also wish Wu and Wei as well as Feathers were more serpentine because I love snakes)

I’m Chinese but I might of forgotten but I don’t think two-headed dragons means rebirth nor they ever existed in Chinese culture. I don’t want to argue but I think June is still quite annoying and her character design is creepy. You can have your own opinions though!
The insistence of all dragons having 4 legs is really upsetting to me, because while its obviously not representing historical dragons NEARLY as well as it should be, its not even true to the series. Honestly, im just getting into httyd, but even in the FIRST MOVIE they show a 2 legged dragon and also blatantly legless dragons in the book hiccup reads! I would also argue that along with wu and wei and feathers having no legs, plowhorn (being obviously very bug inspired) should have more that 4 legs

I love Alex so much, she’s so relatable and has similar quirks to me- I don’t care if this show is kinda bad, I love her and Feathers. Her and Feathers meeting felt like whenever I met my therapy dog for the first time, and I adore it.

As a Chinese person, I have no issues with Jun being into more western traditions and magic. Heck! I know more about western culture than my own. Less happy about the weird design choices regarding her appearance and dragon. Like seriously? Wtf is it with her eyes? Do all fictional asians have to have long over exaggerated eyes?

I think I may know what they were going with for Thunder. It is about Semi-Feral Horses en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semi-feral . So my theory is that Thunder is like a Semi-Feral Dragon that thanks to the parent who has ties to Toothless carried that trait through his bloodline. But it is just a theory I have about Thunder you can take it with a grain of salt if you want. I was just sharing my idea.
I just wish they were more scientifically accurate like they were from the first movies/shows because it would help to add proper arrow dynamics, biology, and behaviors. I will admit I’m not a huge fan with what they’ve done so far, but some show are like that, bad in the beginning but pick up in the end. This may sound weird, but part of me hopes the show doesn’t get cancelled, because maybe we may be able to see/get more information about things like stories about Hiccups kids, and maybe even how New Berk looks now in the show or relics from the past. Maybe this show even finding the Dragon Eye or gravesites or something cool like that. I’ll admit this show DOES have potential to get better and draw us in, but we don’t know yet until they decide what they will do next.

I personally don`t mind spin off series, especially if that series has something new to offer and the idea of dragons having to navigate a modern technological world sounds awesome. however, this show kind of feels like it has an identity crisis. It wants to do its own thing but at the same time realigning too much on what made the original HTTYD movies good.

I actually really enjoyed the show, so it's nice to see someone who isn't trashing on it! Also, my sister is autistic and I have anxiety/OCD, so it would be really cool if that one character has autism!
I have never felt more called-out then when you gave your description for Alex. Minus being a super-hacker (and the rhetorical question bit, I think I have a good understanding of those, at least 90% of the time), that felt so relatable to me. I have never been properly diagnosed with anything, but I highly doubt I am neurotypical.

This is just a theory of mine, but I think many of us might find it so important for Wu and Wei to have two riders because that was the situation with Barf and Belch. I don’t mind Jun riding them alone, but an enby rider on one of the heads would also be really cool. Maybe that them and Jun would switch head from time to time? Since Jun loves both of them equally I think that would be the best way to go, so it doesn’t seem like favouritism. If you have any ideas on that enby rider, I’d like to hear them!
It was honestly a let-down, but not as bad as me and some of my other friends were expecting. The blatant parallels in the show threw me off and disgusted me a lot, they’re copying down a scene when they could build something more organic and new. I wish they called back a lot of dragons from the original films, I do understand evolution and all but a lot of them look COMPLETELY different and it makes it seem like a whole other universe entirely, save fro a few details that connect it to the original films.

I don't think the dragons this series evolved from the ones of the original. I think they're species are more like close genetic relatives like how in the Netflix series they mentioned how the Dramillion and the Changewing are distant cousins.

Pretty spot on! They could go far with it considering they didn't have money for this series so the animation is poor unlike rave to the edge. People wanted a good future spinoff and they are trying to fulfill that. As far as the unearned dragon relationships. In the movies it goes from war with dragons to friendships with them in the 9 reals its easier cuz those dragons don't have the beef with people their ancestors did. So it does in a way make sense.
I was always pretty open minded about Nine Realms more because I simply figured "eh, they grew with their audience and now theyre gonna try and bag a new audience" and didn't think anything more of it. IDK if its because of that, but I still feel pretty okay with Nine Realms even though I have little desire to watch it myself. But it is nice to see it has some up sides even if it does feel like they refused to put in the love and effort that made the original HTTYD movies so good.

The first thing I thought of the faultriber(idk if I spelled it right) was that it looks like maleficent's dragon form
in my opinion it doesn't make much sense if so any sense to me on how thunder would be existing over a 1000 years later because toothless was actually the last night fury and the only furies left that weren't died out or hunted to almost extinction was the light furies and they were only white and had no black in them (refering to the fact that thunder was two coloured). Im not a scientist or something like that and im not 100% sure but from what i understand, toothless is connected to the lightning clearly as we gathered in the last movie and his genes passing through to where thunder's fire or whatever is fully lightning. That would be more as if it was more of an offspring from a skrill and that wouldn't make much sense or how any of toothless' genes would pass on for so long since his kids were only half and half night fury and light fury and because of that i think his genes would've worn out in the blood line enough till this time for thunder to 1. have lightning power and 2. have black and white colour in him. Now this is just what i think from watching a lot of videos about the og and the nine realms so correct me if im wrong. Though i understand that of course they might've just wanted to make a little series of a gang of kids befriended dragons and stuff in the modern world i dont know to me it just doesnt make much sense at all.
I think that Tom earned his bond easier is because like dogs if we left them in the wild then brought them back to society they would remember based off of genetics if that makes any sense

I haven't seen the series (and I don't want to seeing all this), but the call back in the end feels very half assed tbh. It's obvious where its from, and it's nice it doesn't automatically imply a romantic interest, but it's just not done right (in my opinion). Also, I love that you do these vids!

You know I watch the whole thing just recently and after seeing your video I have to say I have actually did like it.
The animation yeah I can see what people are complaining about but this is way more cheaper than making a whole entire movie that's cost millions to make, so I'm not too mad about that.
The story I do think it was a little bit Rush with some of the characters I think we just had a couple more episodes it could have easily been more getting to know each character a little bit better along with their dragons, but I am happy what we got from the six episodes.
Lastly I do have a few mixed opinions about some things but it was still good to me.
I can understand that some people would complain about some of the carers feel like rip off of The originals How to train Your dragon characters but personally I don't really complain all that much about it since they did it differently but try the same thing, if that makes any sense.
Like when Tom and thunder eat fish nuggets, some people have complain about that because it felt like a rip off of hiccup and toothless eating a raw fish.
Personally I don't really care about that because when you look at the differences besides this nuggets and just regular raw fish there are a few differences between the two that makes a little short story of them eating together different.
But that's just one thing many people complain about of feeling like a rip off.

The answer is no. There is no other answer. The premise, the dragon designs, and the human characters are all garbage. Thunder also looks awful and inbred, which does make sense, since he probably is. There's no charm. There's no sense of wonder. The only dragon that looks like it belongs alongside the HTTYD franchise is the Plowhorn, whose design is actually pretty good.
I don't think I'm going to watch season one, as I feel as if Dreamworks is trying to milk one of it's most successful franchises as much as possible. However, you have convinced me to try season 2 when it comes out to see if it still has that old HTTYD charm.
My concerns started when the character models looked worse then a show that first released half a decade ago and 2nd red flag though a minor one was a pink eye color because httyd as unrealistic or extreme as it got it usually made the people models A realistic and B mimic there dragons to some extent this did neither
I just hate the character designs. The faces just... ehgh. deep in the uncanny valley. Like, even the first HTTYD cartoon series had better animation.

The reason why there arw not really any darker colored characters in httyd is because it is in the viking era. Vikings thought to be or depicted as fair toned with mostly light colored hair, so the show was just being accurate. The only reason the nine realms as other races is because it is in a more modern era now, not a biking era
There is very little evidence that there actually were vikings that were not white
Ok, I kind of like how awkward and weird Thunder’s design is, because realistically he should! He is…uncomfortably inbred, as far as I’m aware.

animation had several scenes where it was not lip-synced. Animation itself felt sluggish in quality at times. now the main problems for me.
Problem A) designs and characters...
Feathers design was a BORE, like super dull. Though the shy girl was the only one to make me laugh.
The main kid, how do I put this nicely, was a brat. Yes, I said it, and we all thought it. Okay, there were times where his character was seeming to develop before it got yeeted. Now I dont mind Thunder's design, but maybe fix his face, it should be more like toothless tbh, but thats me.
The kid with Snotlout's Build, had Fishlegs almost EXACT personality. But his dragon was good in design, I did like Plowhorn. Plowhorn felt like a properly thought out dragon, She clearly belongs in Boulder Class, and seemed to be the evolved branch of Gronckles.
Wu and Wei's rider, meh, she could do with, idk, a shred of individual personality and not just be there as a space filler. And her dragon is the only Cultural themed one, like, what? I dont mind a cultural theme dragon, but dont make it A) stick out like a nadder in a sheep herd against the other dragons and B) Make it the ONLY one and try to pass it off as "yeah, thats httyd worthy"
If they show more dragons trying to escape to the surface, I do hope they take the dragons from the series and think more of how they would evolve. (Deathsong, Whisper death, speedstingers, Armorwings, Bonenashers, and even some from Rescue Riders would be fun to see and help tie Rescue riders more into the httyd universe, Such as Agro and Cutter)
The mother to the main kid, she was okay. Now if they make a season two, have her play out somewhat like Jim Lake's mother(troll hunters on netflix), Debra was well written and played a semi-key part in the end of Troll Hunters, no spoilers here. and I feel if they drive the story right, Main kid's mom could be a big key part in the future. Like, what if she ventured into a cave, Cave in happens, uh oh, wild dragon (a future version of the Rumblehorn, bc why not?) and have her see this dragon who is scared as she tries to understand why it is, and over the course of maybe two episodes? she bonds with it, the dragon not allowing anyone near it exact her and she trains it like Stoick did Skull Crusher (understanding that the dragon was warning them). tbh, would be dope. Then the reason why the cave in and the dragon was scared would be due to the tunnels causing lava to rise up or the ravine or whatever it is become unstable due to the tunnels, bc lets face it, that place gotta be unstable now.
Problem B) STORY...
Whoo moma, here we go.
I didnt really like it. It did just barely enough, I dont mind the refs they make, but episode one, polar bear incident. It gets mentioned over and over in ep 1, never to be spoken again after wards. The ending where the mother may now know of dragons intrigued me, giving me hope it can improve. but to put the main reason I didnt like the season 1 story. It played like the one episode of defenders/riders of berk, where a bunch of whispering deaths, and one mad screaming death, burrow all under berk. tbh, berk story arch of the deaths burrowing was better than a whole season build up to the main baddie dragon. The dragon bonding between Wu and Wei, and their rider was, bland. not really HTTYD worthy. Thunder and Main kid could have had mooore of a bonding sesh, but Feathers and Plowhorns bonding made sense to me and was done okay.
Now, dont get me wrong, one season to get a story done can be tough, but Race to the Edge shows its okay to drag a story on for multiple seasons, as long as you can transition the story like yak butter on hot toast, smoothly. If season 2 comes out, heres a few ideas and points I like to see hit;
1) main kid mom pieces things together, goes to cave to see what main four is up too and to see if she is right, while kids try to plan on how to hide and prevent discovery of dragons.
2) Thunder spooks main kid mom, mom runs into a tunnel, cave in happens, she is trapped. Thunder, being smart, sends camo Feathers to secretly bring kids to situation.
3) The main kid mom finds a dragon (possibly evolved Rumblehorn) in a state of panic, hitting the walls and making the cave-in worse. Now mom has to try and calm the dragon down to save both herself and the dragon.
4) After getting free, her son has to reason with her to keep the dragon's secret.
5) Dragons freak out, trying to get to the surface, sinkholes and caves in happen alot, effect of baddie tunnel dragon's tunnels. The base is now sitting on a possible honeycomb and has become unstable.
6) Kids and now mom must stop the dragons from getting out, and stop the land from collapsing due to all the tunnels.
7) End the season with the rival getting suspicious of the kids and the mom having heard the rival plan to go into the tunnels and find out what's down there, now having to stop them with the kids and dragons. Allowing another season to possibly come off this with mom rival coming back with new invention/evidence of something big.
but thats me. I'd flow out my ideas/points in story more, but I dont wanna make this anymore longer.
Overall, okay show, could become great.
That is a really gross design for a Chinese dragon. They just took the European swan lizard design, gave it two stereotypical Chinese dragon heads, and dunked it in the water. Clunky and bizarre.

Is this made by the same studio that made HTTYD? From what I've been able to see, Thunder is effectively just a recolour of Toothless, which makes it really confusing that he comes across so clunky because they could have just recoloured the original model and reused that instead of making all new models.

Hi new here. So I can respect your opinion for this show, how you have your negative thoughts but you are okay with the show. Personally, even if a lot is true, I truly love this show. Some things maybe were force but it is a series on a streaming service; some shows are shortened to fit. Basically, this series answered my question from the last film, and it answered very well

The whole idea of this is a bit weird, and everything feels rushed and not original anymore. And I don’t like the idea of them being a lot of years in the future, it could have been like 50 years maybe more but I hate that we won’t see hiccup or any of the original characters again, and everything feels so un earned and cheesy , I also feel like the character designs are really crappy and the animation is really stiff . Yeah sure they tried but it feels like they put very little effort, it feels like they only want money now and by doing this they might not be able to continue becsuse of unhappy people and lack of attention the show would be getting.
Animated people of color always getting their dark brown eye colors replaced either by more “white people” eye colors like blue, or by weird stuff like this purple eye stuff. I’m half Chinese; not a fan of that. Not sure what might be said by someone who’s “fully” Chinese, as much as that matters with regards to mixed race people.
i had better or high hopes at some point i was even hoping they never continue on httyd i wanted it to end at the 3rd movie it was a perfect closing even during the special winter video. it was just a nice addition nothing wrong but i rlly wish it ended there instead they had to continue the series with horrible budget i mean this is dreamworks creators of the many trilogies and hidden gems. some people say they dont mind the animation maybe bc it was it wasnt far off similair to the series but i compared them and just somewhat i prefer the original series. this one simply didnt live up to my expectations or hopes i was hoping instead of this animated mess they would continue the dragons book a documentary like for dragon species because there is so much more to know about dragons lets make it entirely scientific why not but then in the end we have to deal with this. some peope say the show will take off to be better and tbh to that i say lower your expectations we have s2 coming and they pulled out razor and skrill means this is a trump card of some sort to make old fans comeback to witness it and they very likely continue it which now makes no sense at all i thought we all said the dragons have evolved into new species but nvm that at all since skrill and razor didnt change at all now does it.

The overwhelming amount of white people in the movies are due to the setting of the movies being the medieval times with Vikings as the main cast. I would rather have historical accuracy with the setting over shoehorned diversity. The only person from a non-Viking area in terms of blood lineage in both the How to Train Your Dragon books and the time period of the films is Alvin the Trecherous, who lead a faction of Roman soldiers at some point in the books. Even Byzantium is mentioned in one of the other shows. They most likely never traveled there because of money would have been needed to model an entire city and design soldiers in Roman armor. It would have been easier and cheaper just to pallet swap the armor on goons to Gronkle Iron than create the entire Roman army.
Honestly your thoughts one this season is my thoughts on the show itself, other than season two which was really questionable, its honestly not the worst thing but the they can deffinitly improve and almost everything they've given us here, honestly it's embarrasing how singular teens on a fanfiction platform can write a better plot and characters than a team of professionals but it all boils down to them just doing it for the money, i do honestly think if they tried to stand on something themselves, as they've tried it and it works way better than the carbon copy the first season was, they might actually be somewhat of a good show, the few things that do irritate me arent bad enough that i dont want to watch it as i've been watching the entire show which is weird considering i was watching Star Vs before but completely stopped so i can watch this show, but i have formed some sort of a soft spot for these characters, and id love to see something actually good come out of this show. Ive watched the entire DTNR series and loved it
I liked the characters and stuff although I feel the same on Thunder and Tom's relationship. The others earned theirs well
Also, on design I'd say I like them all. Although Wu and Way (please tell me if I spelt that wrong. If I did I'm sorry) could've been so much better. I feel like the gold ruins it. Its mixed horribly with the blue and red in my opinion.

I think the lack of diversity, racial and otherwise is because the films take place in 700bc Scandinavia, there wouldn't be diversity. Its not an issue for the films because its not realistic
Honestly, I have a long list about all of the complaints and questions I have about the whole HTTYD franchise, so be prepared:
1. I was really confused when Toothless didn't come back after Hiccup gave him his new prosthetic tail, would he have came back even if Hiccup didn't find him? If not, I'll hold a grudge against him for who knows how long. If you know the answer to this, please tell me because now I'm questioning if Toothless is selfish to leave his best friend and soulmate behind for a female dragon and to live in the Hidden World, without a goodbye.
2. In the first movie, Toothless only has 2 side ear nubs, but as he ages, he gains 3 small little ones a little more under his head. That's how it's like in the 2nd and 3rd movie. But I'm the epilogue, 10 years later, he still only has 5 ear nubs on the side of his head. I didn't pay attention to the Light Fury in the epilogue, but she might have the same amount as we last saw her as well. Did DreamWorks forget to add extra ear nubs or age or is there a reason why they didn't?
3. Why does the Light Fury have only a total of 4 ear nubs? Sure, she's supposed to look feminine (Which is why they scrapped the concept Light Fury design, which was actually very creative and cool, and didn't look too feminine that it looked unnatural.). I mean, look at Stormfly and Meatlug! They're both females, and Meatlug was even mistaken as a male at first because of her looks! So unless it has to do with the differences of the two subspecies, Light Fury and Night Fury, or about her feminine looks, how would it make sense for her to be the same age as Toothless with that number of nubs?

Thunder is a bit to goofy looking with his water balloon head and giant feet but I can see what the creators were going for with his design.
Wu and Wei have a really dumb looking design. I feel the cultural inspiration feels way too forced and why did they give a two headed Dragon one tail.
Plowhorn actually looks alright although the tail looks a bit out of place.
Feathers looks really nice and has a cute design and is by far the best Dragon in the show.

The Vikings went to Americas and they went further south towards southern Europe.

It doesn’t make sense to have a diverse cast on the village of berk, the same it wouldn’t make sense to have a diverse cast on a movie about tribes in africa, or in feudal japan
