Speaking as an old head, we lost something when we moved away from tapes. There was always the one or two hits they played on the radio, but you had to listen through the tape to get to them. I always found stuff I liked better between the "hits". I feel like a lot of people, especially now, just go on and stream that song from the radio. It changed music and the way an album is written.
I've started collecting vinyls of math rock groups I like, like Toe, Covet, or Mouse On The Keys. They do cool things with vinyl now.

When we stopped paying for albums, tape or cd or vinyl, people stopped making Albums worth paying for. And now almost all popular music sucks. There are no more great musicians getting big. Producers are the ones who know anything about music, and the 'musician' just needs to be an influencer, dress cool and dance. And the producers are hardly musicians themselves. The software companies do all the real work. And then people just figure out lowest common denominator to cash in on teens that haven't developed taste in music. It's the dark ages and all cause we're too cheap to pay for a cd.

I was buying my songs from Googleplay exclusively for many years. I was using Amazon before that, but they weren't using a fixed 320 kbps standard at that time and Googleplay was. Lately I've been transitioning over to a French site called Qobuz. You can download your music in pretty much any format including CD quality WAV or better and no limit on how many times. I still highly recommend backing up any music you purchase by saving it to a device, devices, and/or cloud service. With streaming you may not always have a connection and you never know when they're going to change the game on you.
That's what works for me. I do wish I knew how the breakdown of what you pay versus what makes it to the artist's hands works from one service to the next, though.

Some artist get a kick back for every record they sell, some sell their masters for a certain amount and never see anything else, others sell it for a few years and then own it. It honestly depends on the contract the artist signs. It really has no answer.

The problem with RZA’s breakdown is it’s waaaaaaay cheaper nowadays. Back then it would cost you a lot to make just one song. You pretty much had to have a studio. Now, as long as you have the gear, you can pretty much make entire albums for free.

The gear costs money. Maintenance of the gear costs money. Electricity costs money. Releasing the tracks on DistroKid, CDBaby etc costs money. You can't make music for free, someone is paying for the electric at least and you can't release it to earn back for free as the service providers charge for their service. Yes it's way cheaper nowadays but it ain't free so musicians still need to make back money and earn a living from their art

    • @RoomAtTheTopStudio
      @RoomAtTheTopStudio 4 года назад +3

@@simplychiseled4649 probably because RZA probably didn't do the Damien Dash and Jay Z thing and sell vinyl from the boot of his car so he missed out the experience of the cost of mastering for vinyl, getting a stamper made, printing labels and the cost of sleeves for the records.
In the old days this cost added up and you needed to break even on the first press to make your money back to make it to the second press. Once you did this on the second run you don't have the mastering and stamper costs, I usually printed twice the amount of labels as I was pressing on the first run so I didn't need to print labels on this run so it would just be the vinyl press and the paper sleeve cost on the 2nd run and the rest coming in is profit. If that sold and you went to the third press and that was selling then your invoice book would be looking nice.
Nowadays it's cheaper but the money coming back is a lot less and it takes longer to get paid. In vinyl days I could sell 10,000 records of one title in around 3 months and make £17 - £18 grand net. That was 25 years ago. 10k download sales nowadays isn't even half of that. It's approximately £5 to £6 grand. Takes longer to make the sales and streaming doesn't even make a penny per stream.
Yeah I still do the digital but damn do I look back at the old days of vinyl and remember it like it was a license to print money if you had the hot products.

Read an article recently about a guy who wrote one of Bon Jovi's big hits, it was streamed 500 million times in 2018 and he received a grand total of $6000. That is about 0.0001c per stream served. The artist is being robbed, the streaming platforms are bandits.

@@ZolYinPodcast with a monthly subscription of $10 Spotify bring in enough to cover the artists fee for streaming between 1 and 10 million song streams per month. Now of course they have their overheads to cover and surprisingly they post losses every quarter, this is likely down to the vast advertising budget and is basically a business run at a loss to encourage customer growth, thus vastly increasing share value.
Regardless of the economics, the artist is getting a very poor deal, actual sales of hit songs are about 10% of what they were 20 years ago. The artist used to get a very small piece of a very large pie, nowadays they get a much smaller piece of an even larger pie. The only artists making real money are those that can sell out arenas night after night for 2 year long world tours, thus guaranteeing them a better deal from promoters/venues. The moderately successful artists are having to do much more just to bring in less than they could have expected previously. The streaming revenue is almost non-existent for them after the label take licencing and distribution fees etc, profits from digital sales of albums are swallowed up by the distribution platform (itunes etc) and the record label taking the lion-share (often in excess of 90% which means an artist is lucky to get $1 from a $10 sale). This is why TIDAL was created, so the megastars could gain control and take a larger share for themselves instead of giving it all to apple/google/amazon etc and the record companies.

Because he is under a contract of big time labels like Sony and Warner Brothers who pay him and the other members of the group. Artists should ditch these companies and spread the music themselves. However then the costs should be lower since no actual production costs have been made. Of course physical media is better than digital. However you have to be realistic. Those only will be purchased by a happy few. You won't be able to escape the digital realm.
How come he is not speaking about touring or merchandising. That is where the artists generate the most income these days. Of course he is not going you to tell this because he wants you to feel sorry for them.
He is not honest about what and how he earns. He is only telling what he supposedly is losing. Does a digital download always equal a purchase? Or let me phrase it differently. Would I have bought a cd, vinyl or digital download from respected sources if I was unable to get it for free? That depends. But let's say I got myy hands on an illegal mp3 and I really like the music. What do you think I would do? Or what most people would do. They would tell people how good it is. Guaranteed that then more people would buy more from respected sources.
If you want real knowledge you shouldn't listen to an artist who is not giving you all the information in the first place.

Buy the physical. Then if the star does something illegal, and their music is removed from the streaming services, you still have it.

By the numbers the best way to stream is Tidal. They payout way more per stream to the artists, and cost the same to use as Spotify or Apple music at $9.99. They are also the only service to offer Hi-Def streaming for an extra $10 a month.
    Tidal : $0.0125 per stream
    Apple Music: $0.00735 per stream
    Spotify: $0.00437 per stream
These can vary depending on how big the artist is and how well they can negotiate prices.

Joe: Yeah but what's the best way to support Wu Tang?
RIZ: Going out a buying the vinyl or CD.

@J L Yeah, what Rogan wanted to know was what streaming service gives artist the best deals, but I dont think they dont give artists themselves the deals. Im pretty sure they give the publishing company the deals.

J L They are literally talking about how the music industry works and how very little of a purchase actually goes to the artist. It seems like a natural question to work out what the best way to REALLY support an artist is.
Of course the reality depends on the individual artist and how they sell their music. Eg, Do they have Bandcamp? Do they own merchandise rights?
But it’s not a dumb question. It’s a question created to try and help get as much money to an artist as possible.

We're in the merch meta. Metal musicians tend to tell their audiences to user whatever legitimate methods they have access to to listen to the music. Then pick up some t-shirts, some posters, some vinyl special editions and check them out when they're in town next. This is how I go about it.

@@kodisummerville5366 your comments dont make sense. Your stealing from the musician, you keep talking about the music industry as if the musicians u like aren't a part of it. People barely get on radio w/o a label. You not liking a song isn't an excuse fore stealing. Like you said u dont like something dont buy it, that doesnt mean steal it instead. You take away and steal the labels screw the musicians bc they take a higher percentage of their merchandise sales and touring which they didnt do before. You are directly screwing over musicians. You screw-n a musician puts you and the musician in a powerless position, you aren't helping anyone. You gonna finance their albums ,videos and tours nd promote them to millions of people and get them on tv and radio? Nah, ur just gonna take their shit n do nothing w it.

I buy records quite often and my digital music I buy it directly from record labels I follow when possible and from artists who have their music available on Bandcamp. Streming is convenient but in order for an artist to make a sustainable living from it is not yet feasible.
