Are Coin Dealers Crooks? How To Handle A Coin Dealer - How To Act In A Coin Shop

  • Are coin dealers crooks? I venture to say there's crooks in every business, and anyone can be a jerk. I just think most coin dealers are wrongfully accused of being a crook. I base the opinion on the fact that some people are just jerks with dealers expecting them to be crooks, and because they have over-valued their own coins, or paid too much for their coins and think the dealer is trying to rob them.

I always thought my local coin dealer was a jerk (Who is also my wifes dad) till after spending some time at his shop and seeing all the bs he goes through all day.
From the old guys who come in, sit on a stool and talk for hours about their lives pretending to be looking at buying coins, only to walk out not spending a single dime, to the guy that comes in with a 1972 circulated ike and gets mad when told it's not worth the $55 his asking, to the flippers who come in and cherry pick the store and then the bullion guys who want everything you have for less than spot even though it has numismatic value. And then me, the son in law who comes in with the grandkids that pretty much break anything they touch, while I show him some stupid peace dollar I got on Ebay.
    I get it now. 😂🤣🤐

In the County I live in, a shop opened in the early 70s when I was a kid. Another one of MANY coins shops in the county. But he was a nice man and you felt, even as a kid, that you were being treated fairly. Eventually his son took over running the business (his dad still comes in a day or two per week) and followed his father's example. They are the only remaining shop in the county and are still a pleasure to deal with. The guys playing to long game are the ones to deal with.

Great video. For years there was a coin shop just off the public square in Springfield mo. As a high school kid i walked into his shop one day with my book of Roosevelt dimes. He took his time not to sell me coins or steel mine, but to educate me into grades, rarities and enjoyment of the hobby. A good dealer, a great teacher and a fine gentleman for a teen to know. A friend for many years.

Great video Daniel. I purchased silver and gold bullion 45 years ago from a coin dealer. I have been studying numismatics for 2 years now i'm 63 and I inherited 2 collections from my great aunt and grandparents, I didn't have a clue what to do with them. When I walked in again I'm sure he thought I was a crook, i'm disabled and have the shakes pretty bad at times among other physical problems. He's a fantastic person with a great deal of experience and knowledge. He was carrying a Glock along with his other family members who work there I was almost afraid, I carry too, just not often and not in a coin shop. I broke the ice with small talk and purchased a Franklin half and a full set of silver war nickels (all bu toned) the next time 2 morgan dollars (now a few morgans on hold) he was wearing a Harley Davidson shirt and it happens my sister owns a Harley shop so we had some common ground along with coins. He is a fantastic person and I have a great deal of respect for him and his family. Being disabled I'm uneasy in some situations, after I told him why I was jittery he relaxed some and every time I go in now he remembers me, my name, and the different things I collect, it's great I couldn't ask for anything more. Anybody and everybody should have this attitude and it sounds like you are the same way with your customers. So thankfully they didn't shoot me and they understand my dilemma with the disability. From my experience with coin dealers, they are personable and just top notch people who are loving a hobby and the people involved in it. I've been burned by some sellers mostly ebay and a few others, I think it's unavoidable as a new collector unless you study a lot, look at as much reference material as you can and talk to people who are experienced and watch videos like this and all of yours and others before you ever buy a coin. This hobby has so much information to help you and it is a difficult hobby to learn in a short time. I am usually a loyal customer especially with local grass roots businesses like his and mine used to be. I hope he doesn't retire soon, it would be a loss for me. Keep up your great work it's valuable to many I'm sure.

I've been trading, selling, buying coins for over 30 years. In my experience dealers in NY, brick and mortar, are lowballing customers who walk in their stores. I've seen it over and over again. I once had my sister walk into LCS with a to get an estimate to sell on one hundred 2015 ASE, at the time soot price was 18 to 19 dollars year 2016. She was told they are a year old and the 2016 are out. She was offered 14 dollars a coin. He told her, he will be sitting on these for awhile and is taking all the risk if they sell. That's what I deal with from different dealers. I'm not saying they're crooks, just want to make more profit. Oh, and I'm not over estimating what I think they where worth, I was expecting at least 17 to 18 dollars a coin.

One coin dealer near me likes people to call in advance so they can be prepared to bring inventory from the back to sell. They are very busy and one of the largest bullion dealers on the East Coast. Also calling them lets you know they'll pay for bullion. If you get to know a coin dealer they'll allow you to pay by personal check.

Thanks for the video Daniel. It's very true that the dealer is thought of as the crook a lot when buying coins from a customer. I was guilty of it in the beginning of building a relationship with him but that's because I wasn't educated on business yrs ago. Now it's just like you described in your video, goings on of a small town shop. 😁

Very thoughtful treatment of this subject. I'm a "vest-pocket dealer" on weekends at a local swap meet - and have consistantly listened to complaints from my customers about the "crooks" at the only brick-and-morter coin shop in our small city. I dropped into that shop today for the first time in years to pick up some odd-size air-tites, and watched them at work for about an hour. They worked diligently trying to educate several walk-in customers on grades and values - and I noted that their buying and selling prices were very fair, with a reasonable margin. I departed the shop with much less cash and more coins than I entered with. I will never again listen to complaints about "the crooks" without voicing my opinion!

Great Video!!! I think it is important to realize there are different kinds of coin dealers. We are all people, but many of us have different jobs. Some serve the selling public, some serve retail customers, and some are wholesale only and serve marketers and retailers. Some have more time than others to chat with their customers, just because a coin dealer doesn't seem talkative may not mean he is not friendly. His job may just be different than you realize. Thank you for taking the time to post this :)

I came across your videos quite by accident only recently, and I love what your doing! Keep up the good work, because education is key no matter what.
I am a long time collector and consider myself fairly knowledgeable about coins. I have to say that most dealers are honest, but there are some out there who are definitely crooks...who unfortunately get the majority of attention and for all the wrong reasons.
This reminds me of something that I experienced, and thanks to my knowledge it helped prevent me from being ripped off. Many years ago when I was fresh out of high school, I bought a 1916 Canada 10 cent coin (I live in Canada) from the first dealer I ever started going to when I first began collecting. He had graded it as a MS-60, and I believed it was under-graded. I thought it MS-63, so I bought the coin. Fast forward about 6 and a half years, I brought it into another dealer just to show him (didn't have any intention of selling and told him as much). He looked at the coin and graded it as a MS-63, confirming my initial thought from years before.
Fast forward about another 5 years, and I was looking to downsize my collection. I brought it into the dealer I just mentioned for an offer, including the very same 1916 dime he had seen. Long story short, when I was looking to sell, his opinion of the grade of my dime all of a sudden dropped from MS-63 to AU-50! Needless to say I didn't sell anything to him because of this. Later that year I submitted my dime (along with some other coins) to PCGS, and guess what? PCGS assigned a grade of MS-63 to this dime! I still have this coin in my collection to this day.

If there is more than two dealers in a small area I would go to the one that has been in business longer. They are more likely to be honest (with some exceptions). That does not mean the newer shop is NOT honest but I would tend to the more "experienced" shop first. Also, price comparison is easier. Where there is only ONE shop in an area I would tend to go to another area. Thanks Daniel.

Also if I clean a old penny or something like that denomination what should I use or should I do it at all? Is a cotton swab a good thing to rub dry on a coin bc I did it too two old Penny's that had Gunk I wanted to remove that came in a coin roll. I was also wondering if I should use pcgs restoration process.

Excellent video Daniel.. First i like thank Daniel for all his work , videos and knowledge he shares with us. I've been around coins off and on for a long time. I'm no expert by a long shot. A coin shop is a business, just like grocery stores, clothing stores and so on.How many of us have went shopping, looking at prices, and say, that is highway robbery, i can get it cheaper down the road.Yelp, we have all said that. Example.... Two coin shops in same town.First coin shop pays 3500 a month in rent 1200 in electricity. You take your coin in to sell. You get a low offer, you get mad and leave and and go second coin shop. This coin shop pays 1500 in rent, 700 in electricity. He gives you better deal. then we say that other coin shop tried to rob me. No not at all.All business have different expenditures, even coin shops. So saying they are crooks, l say. no. There will always be a shady character somewhere.

I had a bad experience at a little coin shop the guy had a bowl at the counter with low grade silver coins . I found a 2001 buffalo dollar with a hole drilled in the top and had been beaten up. I ask how much for it ( silver was going for about $20 Oz ) and he looked up in the red book the price of a Ms 70 and told me he wanted $400 . I told him to keep because I felt it was only worth the one oz silver price and left the store never going back.

Fantastic video, thank you for the insight. You’re a gentleman and an educator Daniel, you’re in this business for the right reasons. Do you list and sell your coins online? I’d like to purchase from you. I’m a new collector in Southern NJ/Philly area. The coin shops i’ve encountered seem to be “grumpy old Men” with a “what do you want?” attitude. As a new collector, I like to browse, get advice, recommendations and get a feel for what’s available. Truthfully I don’t know what I want, I’m purchasing what catches my attention and has potential. I’ve walked out of a few shops for that attitude. However, I have a couple of private collector/sellers that I purchase. They take their time, teach me about collecting, answer questions, explain the potential of the coins I’m purchasing and have very reasonable pricing. We’ve become friends and that’s the reason I’ve spent 15K plus with them within 4-5 months. You’re 100% correct it’s about building relationships/friendships and educating each other (each one teach one).

If anyone has ever run any kind of a business, they know that there is a whole lot to making that business successful. Hard work is just one aspect that makes a business work. Customer service and relations are a few others.
But no business can succeed if they cannot make enough money to cover expenses. These expenses cover operating costs such as all the things needed to make sure that mail orders get proper care, cost of the rent, insurance, all of the various business permits and licenses, all the various supplies needed to provide for creature comforts for both employees and customers, administrative supplies, and a myriad of other necessities. Don't forget that the owner needs an income just like you and I. He/she also needs money in the bank in case of some kind of unforeseen problem that affects the business, and most importantly, the owner needs to save money for his or her future (retirement). All of this costs money, so the business owner has to come up with a profit margin that will fulfill all these expenses.
Too many of use who have never had to run a business forget that business owners are people like you and I. They have a lot that costs them money. Also remember that many have families with all the necessary monetary requirements to support one. I could go on and on, Just remember that running a business is very difficult. You have to be a Jack or Jill of many things to make it succeed. So don't go whining about how much things cost when you do not understand what running a business entails. Be happy you have a local coin shop to go to. The closest one I have is about 100 miles away.
Though I never have run a business, I did run a snack stand in the office when I was in the US Air Force. I provided a lot to the aircrews and other military personnel to get them through the day. I had to decide what my profit margin would be in order to allow our shop to have two picnics per year. Believe it or not, deciding just how much to charge per item was difficult, and we didn't even have any expenses other than the food items we purchased. But I recognise just how difficult keeping the customers satisfied can be, so that they keep coming back.
Sorry to be long winded, but I just thought I would put in my two cents worth in defence of the majority of business owners, those who actually put their customers first.

DEAR Mr. Malone. Good afternoon. "You my friend " have made an enourmas point. "I" have personally learned from you that KNOWLEDGE is pertinent in your field. THANK YOU for helping me to understand that a COIN dealer ( Well mine is Mr.Stienmetz) loves...to know you as the seller does have some KNOWLEDGE cause I believe the buyer and seller can have an EXCECTIONAL friend ship . It's not always about the money. The gentleman dealt with my son and acknowledges me when I call to speak with him. I never meant such a gentle soul that said to me call before you come so he can spend the time to learn me. You...my friend taught me the KNOWLEDGE to ask for help and also have an idea as to what your selling.THANK YOU MR.MALONE. ❤

My coin dealer has to order in just about anything Newer that I'm looking for, or collecting supplies and he's basically buying it online at the price I could be buying at online myself so I pay his 30+% markup if I go with him on anything, and most of the time he doesn't order what I'm looking for and a week later he doesn't have it still and I'm told maybe next week.
I don't go there anymore and just buy what I want online. That's the reality of it. If I get a vibe that a dealer doesn't care of they make money or not then I will just do my business elsewhere. They guy makes it hard to walk in and spend a couple hundred bucks and get out. I'd be still waiting for a national parks quarter album from him if I didn't give up on it 3 months ago. Just poor customer service. I don't expect my butt kissed for a couple hundred bucks but I do expect some level of service from a place when I'm trying to spend $500 a month on stuff he should have just sitting around. It's not like I'm walking in asking for pristine 1909S VDB cents (which he also wouldn't have) nothing I'm looking for is extremely difficult to find he just doesn't want to do business I guess and would rather hang out all day with the retirement crew that's always there hanging around drinking coffee and reading the paper . There's all kinds of dealers out there, I'm sure there are some good ones but as a collector if you come across bad ones it gets you set that that's how they all run their business.
I went to a mechanic and the owner of the small shop preferred to watch a video on his computer and make me wait 10 minutes for it to finish before he'd ask what I was even there for. I waited gave him a hard time with a bunch of questions just to waste his time in return then went to a different mechanic shop.
Some business owners need to realize they are doing business, not doing people favors. Customers can go somewhere else. I'd like to have a local coin shop to go to and purchase what I want, but it's like some people don't even want to be in business and I'm not gonna beg someone to take my money. Lol end of rant.

You touched on this and I think its a real factor in a lot of the " theyre crooks" opinion. MY EXPERIENCE has been that I cant think of another collectable item where the "dealers" come off as miserable, egotisticle, uninterested, or are just plain D#"K H#@&S as any other type of collectable or bussiness IVE had experience with. With that said, I can totally understand why that might be, having some experience with them. That demeanor is USUALLY softened pretty quick if you show them your there to do business. But to the newcomer or someone with less experience, I cant understand how MORE dont walk out the door. The attitudes may be justified but dont do them any favors. Thats just MY experience with MANY but not all and is not meant to offend anyone. Great video Dan!!!! Thanks!!!!

I think as a whole they are not crooks but a lot of them are insensitive when someone who comes in with a collection from a love one who passed away don`t explain why the value of the is what it is with some compassion especially when they tell you how they obtain the coin or collection. Coin dealers need to explain on basic to those who are not collectors the value vs inventory and demand so they would have a better understanding why the coin is value the way it is. Keep making videos sir

Pawn shops will not give you a fair price, whether ur buying or selling. I’d lean toward coin shops that have been in business for @ least 5 yrs, longer the better. Treating customers with courtesy & fairly will reward the merchant in the long haul. Unfortunately, many “fly-by-night” types are only interested in ur business if they can make a big score.

So I Watched.I need to clarify. I didn't mean that 30% are crooks. I was referring to them not being like us. I put myself in because I'm not gonna cheet, my momma said to not say something if you know it and you say" well they dident ask" then you a crook. Over half of the shops I've been to (over 100) have that pre 1950 coin roll that's posted as unserched. Some say A never searched. If that dealer Isn't over 70 then I think that he can't know for sure. So the (Never) shop I just look around and Leave. Now the (unsearched) shop I ask them. If that means by them or forever? If they say forever I Excuse myself. The 4 that say by us I don't know for sure. That's my shop. Listen to go mamma!! Your great Bradda. It's good to be back state sids!!
