I loved doing the first movement, and if you want to do it at a slower tempo, I suggest putting your playback speed at .8x for the F Major part, and .9x for the B Flat Minor part, respectively, as those are the tempos I did them at. But keep in mind that custom playback speeds will only work on computers. If you don’t have a computer, just imagine what those playback speeds would sound like.
dude, we played this last year for our spring concert and ever since then, everyone wont stop singing, humming, or playing it………. its time to this spring concert, its been a year
Stupendous eclecticism of Holst. In the first movement he ennobles the band art. In the second it opens us to the scenarios of the mystery. In the third it ranges in vigorous theatricality. In the fourth it makes us happy as in a picnic with friends. Brilliant!
Played this during high school. It holds such strong memories of nostalgia and happiness for me that I can't help but come back listening to it over and over again and reminiscing the times when I played it with the band! Good times
Our University Community band last played this in the Spring of 2017. But they've decided to have us play it again, for the Spring 2022 semester. What a great piece. Fun. And fun solo parts. (Clarinet, here.)
This piece takes me back to my high school days - it was one of the last pieces I ever played in HS band before my graduation. Even though I'm on the teaching side of things nowadays, and have played/conducted it more than once, I always feel that same sense of nostalgia.
We just got this piece for high school band and oh my lord. I got 1st trombone and I realized that I’m doubling the cornet part right before the euphonium solo. Trombone’s aren’t designed to go that high lmao. They should just put it on the treble cleff at that point.
I think trombones are great in that register and cut through an ensemble well. Outside of the US it’s not uncommon for trombonists to read treble clef parts in B flat. You also see tenor clef here and there.
Interesting in the very first few measures that the low brass play the first 5 notes differently than the high winds...I like the brass play that fifth note, which is a quarter stacatto a bit longer than the four eigth notes that precede it while the woodwinds play the quarter the same as the eighth notes
My high school band is playing this with community band. Our high school band is small, so they're bringing me, section leader at middle school advanced band (in grade 7) HELP
This piece has some great euphonium parts. Question: Is the euphonium coming in a measure early at about 8:44 and holding the first note for two measures rather than the one note as the part it written?
The player is playing it as written. I believe you’re hearing the First French Horn part entering on their written C, which is a Concert F, and the same pitch (albeit a different octave) as the Euphonium’s first note. Give it a listen, see if you agree!
It seems I'm in the minority here, but this by far the least favorite piece of music I've ever played in concert band. I think I might just be spoiled by the great music my director chooses. I love the second movement, but that's coincidentally the only one we are not playing.
I CANT GET IT OUT MY HEAD HELP ME ITS IN MY WALLS
Pls it's one day before finales I can't have this on repeat in my brain in class
definitely same 😭
Same
Better than having WAP in your head …
Good
The 6/8 section in the first movement is so great. It sounds like a sea shanty. I love it. This is amazing.
That’s my favorite part!
I play the piece with my orchestra and i hate playing the part but it sounds good
Its an irish jig. I have to play it. Yay. As the one man army trumpet.
Might I recommend folk song suite?
🎷💪
We are playing this for our high school band and this is one of the best pieces I have played
Same! It's my favorite so far. So much fun
Try the first Suite. Even better!

LOL I'm doing it for my middle school band
Same but the song of a blacksmith one is not my favorite

God damn the clarity of that last note just blew me halfway out of my grave.
Thank god someone uploaded a professional version of this! Ive been listening to middle schoolers so long i was worried id be put on a list
this genuinely has to be one of my favorite pieces of all time, i adore it so much
I played the second movement as an oboe solo in a concert this year. It was amazing

I'm doing that right now. Lol
Doing that with my old friend from high school right now lmao

Unpopular opinion here, 7:29 is the best part of the piece.
agreed, but i dislike the 3rd movement. i enjoy movement 4 the most
In my book, that's a fact!
LETS GO FRENCH HORN SECTION!!!
As a trumpet player, I agree with you on this. One of the relatively few places you’ll find love given to the 2nd cornet.
1. Movement 3
2. 6/8 March in Movement 1
3. 4th Movement
4. Movement 1
5.Movement 2

4th movement will always be my favorite
I sang the Holst choral arrangement of I Love my Love in high school, so I’m quite partial to mvt 2. I wish it could go on forever
In Fantasia of dragason that tuba part is brutal
I loved playing the anvil in this piece. It’s just a random percussion instrument but it was fun nonetheless.
Anvils are actually quite popular in band literature now. It’s a very distinctive sound. Brake drums are a popular tool for covering such parts.
I just played this in my orchestra/band concert today, i cant get it out of my head now lmao
I had the beginning and the Euphonium solo of March as audition music to get in the top band group in my school. It was hard, but I got in.
Me playing it in my middle school wind ensemble in while in 6th grade be like: AHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!-----ahhhhhhhh......AHHHHHH!!!!!
Yall did THIS in Middle School? This is at least a High School piece, I would know.
@@Gavman_Gaming_09_79 the band performed this in lincoln memorial center but i wan't there bc i didn't buy plane tickets
I like all the big parts in movement 4.
8:31
8:44
9:22
9:54
Playing Fantasia on the Dargason for MS Wind Ensemble. It's really fun.
Playing this at our fall concert tomorrow night. Wish me luck, lads
Good luck
Why do I still remember all the fingerings from a song I play in HS 45 years ago?
I am the tenor sax player in my high school band, and I love the 6/8 but, still, eek
the gentlemen in the audience getting jumpscared by the last note:
The second movement
This brings me back
Unfortunately this isn't the original score. A lot of the parts have been altered in this one or just straight up left out.
This is an edited version by Boosey and Hawkes, but not the Colin Matthews one

I'm playing the 1st trombone part for assessment and for me those notes come out in the perfect style already. Those notes may be high but you got it.

It sounds like it’s in time to me, but I could be wrong tho

Nice clean performance. But the anvil was very poor--sounds like someone's whacking an empty tin can on a table.
