Superb video! It's so sad to see ghost railways. I joined BRITISH RAIL in 1990 when I 17yrs old. I was a BOX BOY at ORPINGTON signal box. When I was a trainee JUNIOR RAILMAN I got to ride with drivers. It was MIXED TRACTION then, so I got to ride all over the south east in passenger trains and freight. I eventually became a SIGNAL MAN at LONDON BRIDGE ASC, did that for 14yrs before I was dismissed. LOVED being a signalman, superb, challenging, responsible job, but I LOVED it!

A great video and food for thought living locally. I did notice that as you were climbing out of the undergrowth after you've abandoned your attempt to get to Well Heads portal that it was momentarily visible through the undergrowth about 50 yards further up thus confirming the portal is still there.

Old OS maps show sidings on the south side of Thornton station that branched off the main line to the west of the station right where the footpath was where you were looking at the two levels of old bridges. I'm guessing that the sidings were on slightly higher ground than the station (as the main line had to descend a bit to continue to Thornton viaduct) and so this accounted for the two bridges, and with one higher than the other. This is a great series. Thanks for doing all the hard work of exploring so we don't have to!

as iv'e lived in denholme from 1950 i can remember trains running on that line and i even went to blackpool when i was very young with my parents on a day trip, changing at keighley, the line closed to passenger traffic about 1955 and stayed open to goods until the late 50's or early 60's, as a kid in the late 50's or early 60's when the lines were still down we used to walk through the tunnels as far as thornton road bridge then on the road to thornton swimming baths and back the same way, in the 80's i walked most of the bradford to denholme line taking photo's along the way but not through the tunnels as they were blocked up and getting overgrown by then, by that time the big stone facing of the denholme entrance to the wellheads tunnel had long dissapeared ?and was being used as a tip and the cutting had been walled off, in the early 2000's i worked at the timber yard where the station was for a few years before it went bust, on the suject of the remaining goods shed, which was the office of the timber yard and the saw mill, it was said that before it was burnt down, sustrans were going to make it into some sort of a museum to the alpine railway as it was a listed building but the long winded plans of the footpath they had proposed were never implimented, though, i think they still wanted it to be implimented at some stage, before the developers got going the goods shed suddenly burst into flames at 3am one morning, blamed on kids of course, a fireman told me , we get alot of listed buildings that spontainiously combust when they get in the way of future developments, ah memories memories.

Great video Darren. Ultimately for us steam and tunnel buffs a sad one. Those cuttings look dangerous, "flicking eye" injury sounded a little different to me!!!
In a serious point though, these sites should have properly been dismantled or filled in. The ones today to me seem even more dangerous for adventurers not to mention of course a brand new housing estate full of inquisitive kids.
Again as usual, the overriding feeling is melancholy, for the abandonment of infrastructure rather than mothballing, then the staggering maintenance costs of these embankments, bridges, tunnels which we are responsible for. I'd even go as far to say this housing development owner should perhaps have had to fill in, make safe via landscaping the tunnel openings rather than this in my opinion opportunistic real estate deal "around" an old railway line. Its not personal or indeed a one off as my greenway and Leeds new line are littered with them as you know. Its frustrating as when you look at the drone footage it's plain to see where the line went which only cements my mothball not obliterate (to a point) views. Lovely camera work. Would like to hear a bit of Gary in the tunnels for acoustic purposes too! 😂. Best wishes. Be careful. Ben 🚌🚍🇬🇧🇺🇦✊🚩🙏

Yes Darren, I found those features a couple of years ago. The access underpass near the new school. You can see the old school On James St, now a private house!
I did venture down the Well heads tunnel, 1st time was very boggy, but went back when it was a drought, and saw it. There is the remains of an old platelayers hut. Also totally bricked up with a massive graffito on the portal, but the masonry is superb, with rocks and trees at the top, very impressive, and worth the walk. Right now is actually a good time to do it! There exists an old picture of the portal c/w platelayers hut, be good for a fade!
I also did the walk you did, (sinking mud) but found it far too boggy, so settled for a walk round the lip of the cutting instead.
Another time I parked up at Doe park, and walked all the way round the reservoir, walked up to the accommodation bridge, across Denholme Beck.
I did enter Denholme tunnel, and was nearly hit in the face by a robin nesting in there! I got about halfway, but had to go back, because of the depth of the mud, and NO torch!
I made my way over the top and down the other side to Denholme Station, did you see the wall with the massive hole in it, supporting the top of the wall? - Very dangerous!
Then across the massive concrete plinth that was Denholme Station. Found an old circular saw blade, it was a wood yard for a number of years.
I was able to walk through Doe Park Tunnel, though boggy, contained lots of car and tractor wheels.
Eventually after a lot of bridges you come out at 2 farms, the last one Meal Farm, and you are at the quarry/Bunton's yard. and Willesden Stn (Harecroft).
I wonder what the housing developers will do now that these hoses are built, it does not seem the norm to allow children to play in these tunnels, yet people still bust them open. and that wall is very dangerous, wants building back up!
Edited for fly away letters, mostly the 'e' in 'the'. I also wanted to add that as you go down Station Road in Denholme, there is the old station approach coming down from the right, also very boggy at the bottom. . It has a smallholdingand allotments to the east, and Foster park/memorial garden to the West.
    HOABL

I had experience once when I was walking a swampy field which was a huge patch of green land next to Loughborough Brush to look at the locomotives, this was during the winter when it snowed but tried to walk to the fence, realised I couldn't so turned around and could feel my feet sinking into the mud, the whole foot was buried in the mud and didn't help I was wearing trainers at the time but managed to get out and my trousers up to the knees were covered in mud! (even know I only ankle deep) But during the summer that field would be dry as well. but that that experience I would agree that I wouldn't want to get stuck, great video and nice to see the Whitewicks.
