My favorite thing about A Stitch in Time is that it's an entire letter from Garak to Bashir. Julian was expecting probably 10 pages, and instead he got an entire novel! That is love.

I'm a huge fan of this ship, and especially the openness about it that the actors shared at cons. It's my understanding that they even did skits on stage that included pretty blunt references to the romantic underpinnings of the relationship. Trek is my first fannish love, and G/B is my favorite Trek ship! Well, so far. I'm digging Discovery too :)

The thing about "garashir" as opposed to the gay relationship on Discovery is that the relationship on STD... Sorry ST:D Is Established. The relationship on DS9 was one that developed - an angle VERY RARE in TV in terms of gay relationships. That almost NEVER HAPPENS! and that both characters were Career Military... With DADT being HUGE at the time DS9 came out... No wonder Garashir was discouraged! But growing relationships are for straight people, g*d forbid we see a show on TV that explores how gay relationships build, especially between people who are open or curious! Holy hat trick, the world would explode!
And don't even get me started on Paris and Chakotay on Voyager! I have a story on that.
Sincerely, gen-x-er who grew up on this stuff.

DS9 is my fave and I've shipped Garak/Bashir for so so long. I find it amusing that as a result of the resurgence of the show and the ship, A Stitch in Time has become a rare commodity that some people are buying for $50. Like woah. I kinda see it as some kind of semi sub-canon. The actors were all for it, and sometimes even played it that way, and then ASIT can easily be read as a love letter.
It would be nice of something official paired the two in canon.

I could not get into star trek for nothing, me being born in 96 and not in America or Uk is a big hinderance on getting to watch it and enjoy it. But I watched Discovery on netflix recently and loved it, am very interested in Star Trek and wanted to watch one of the oldies but nothing gained my interest. When I saw gif sets of DS9 on tumblr, I was so taken aback by how diverse and gorgeous this cast was. Siddig getting my attention right away (He aged like fine wine btw) so I tuned in on netflix earlier this year and it is the best decision I ever made. I came for the eye candy and stayed for these complicated political and social plots that are still relevant today. Sisko is such a fantastic captain, and as a black man, he is nothing like the stoic or comedic archetypes they usually give to his demographic during the 90s. He was such a whole person, caring, intelligent, a badass, reasonable yet very guided by his heart and strong moral compass. Avery Brooks is a fantastic actor! he made he teary eyed a few times. and just on season 4. Kira is probably still one of the most amazing women in sci-fi to this day. Jadzia is an inspiration to men and women, she's just so damn cool. But Garashir, is really the pairing that just stole my heart. (julian being hated in the 90s is weird, probably why siddig wanted to leave the franchise, to put so much into your first major role and have your character be disliked is heartbreaking). Me finding out the fanbase is still alive and striving after so many years is tremendous. I'm currently reading garashir fanfiction made in 1996 the year I was born and fanfiction made yesterday, that is damn amazing.
Favorite Garashir Scene has to be everything in "Our Man Bashir", the suits, and Garak mocking Bashir's spy LARPing as a professional sp---I mean tailor. Ha.

for me, Gashir was one of the first times I shipped two characters, particularly from Star Trek, way back in the 90's, and before I even understood what shipping was. Its still my main OTP for DS9. I still read fanfic dedicated to this pairing, and enjoy the many artworks that have come out because of it.

DS9 was one of my all-time favorite Star Trek series up until I was spoiled by someone who informed me that one of my favorite characters died and I stopped watching. One of my biggest annoyances with sci-fi space series are the war arcs. I loved the characters usually and the exploration of their relationships and experiences with alien cultures. But war arcs are particular hard for me to drudge through. Thats why DS9 was so wonderful, it felt like a "human" drama but set in space.

I discovered DS9 very recently thanks to Netflix and was blown away. I had always heard such negative things, but ended up loving the more civilian focused star trek. The show felt so much more deep and political with a lot more world building.
As for this ship, I really enjoyed their friendship early in the series but never saw the shipability due to them being separated later on. Although in hindsight I do see it, and much prefer it to the Bashir and Dax pairing the show tried to push.

If I could wave a magic wand, go back in time, and make Garashir canon, I would do that in a heartbeat. But, barring that, I would have been almost as happy if they'd let Garak be explicitly bi/pan, let Bashir be explicitly bi or gay, and then not cut out their friendship as much in the later seasons. It would be much more important to me just to have had some kind of representation--which I think Garak and Bashir would been great for--and then gotten, say, a scene following up on the reveal of their secrets after Purgatory's Shadow and and Doctor Bashir I Presume.

I love Star Trek Deep Space 9. I can confidently say it is my favorite Star Trek series. I shipped Garak and Bashir from the first moment they were on screen together. You beautifully stated all the reasons why I love these characters and this ship so much. Another reason, one that I don’t think was touched on in the video, is their intellect. These two are intellectual equals and I adore that! I could listen to their fascinating conversations about literature, philosophy, and morality, for hours and never get bored. When I was watching the show for the first time, and noticing the lack of character interactions in later seasons, I was one of the fans whose support for the ship grew and often thought about how both characters would react to canonical events and how their interactions change over time.
In terms of on-screen interactions, I love all the ones they had during the first four seasons. For the second half of the series, I think my favorite would have to be from the episode “By Inferno’s Light,” when Bashir is convincing Garak to play his part in the escape plan through logic and his flirty teasing towards Garak that was almost a role reversal, Bashir comforting Garak after his…attack, and then later Bashir’s proud smile when Garak gets back to work amongst his worst fears. Despite the bleak circumstances, all their interactions in this episode are wonderful and some of the most memorable for the ship, I think. One of my favorite types of DS9 fanfics to read is post-cannon Cardassia, how the survivors cope with the after-effects of war, how Cardassian society changes as a result, and how Garak and Bashir come together through helping the Cardassians recover. Shippable moments with these two? Yes, please! There are so many, many moments to jump off from. Thank you so much for covering one of my earliest and favorite ships!

I've only recently found this ship online and fallen in love with it. I've been going through all the Treks as of late, and DS9 is one I've recently finished. However, my being drawn into this ship all over again due to its presence online as drawn me back to watching the Garak and Bashir episodes again. I've also been seeking out fanworks online, and am hoping to get my hands on A Stitch in Time and Enigma Tales to get a fuller picture of them.
The characters of Bashir and Garak fascinate me. Their dynamic also fascinates me. I can't help but be drawn back to them…

I love DS9! I grew up on TNG and was super excited as a kid when I heard DS9 was coming out. But I was only 8 when it started and it's political themes were way too complex for me, I got bored and stopped watching pretty quick. I finally came back to it about 10 years ago and grew to absolutely love it. I still find the 1st season is a bit slow and the characters take time to grow on you, but it pays off so beautifully. DS9 is wonderfully complex. I can't say it's my favourite, because I love TNG and Voyager so much as well. Pretty much whichever series I'm rewatching at the time is my favourite. :P Also: Garak & Bashir Forever!

Ok, I low-key flipped out when I saw you made a Garashir video, haha.
I really like DS9, especially all that alien cultures that has been shown.
My favourite Garashir scenes are of course this one scene in "The Wire", their first scene. The turning 30 scene was also interesting when you watch how interested Garak is in Julian's reaction. The "Especially the lies" scene is probably my favourite. Our Man Bashir was so Silly, but I loved the Garashir moments in it.
I also like the relationship between Garak and Ziyal, even though I don't ship them. It was just really interesting how Garak acted when she kissed him. He always had a look as if he wasn't worth being loved and I really like the thought to bring this side of Garak to his relationship with Julian.
AND you reminded me, that I bought A Stitch In Time today.
PS: Could you make a McSpirk video in the future? Of all the Star Trek ships I have I think it's my OTP. Or maybe you could make a Qcard or Archer/Trip (I know, most people ship Trip/Reed) video. Seriously I wouldn't mind if you would just do Star Trek videos, Star Trek is awesome, haha.

DS9 is my favorite Trek series, I still have to watch the second half of the first season of Discovery but it´s clear that is the best first season of a Trek series in 30 years.
About Garak and Bashir, I never shipped them when I watched the series, I loved their interactions but I still wasn´t aware of those undertones, If I´d watch it now for the first time may I´d do it (or Bashir and O´Brien)
About my favorite shared scenes I´d go with two that I find brilliant:
    1) The one where they discuss Peter And The Wolf
    2) Their final conversation in The Wire

Ds9 is my favorite Star Trek. I might be a tad bit bias given how I grew up watching them on my dad's old vhs system but DS9 always captured my imagination best out of all the Star Trek shows (not by a large margin but still). Yeah, it can be annoying how the station changes size depending on which ship is docking and it has plenty of faults but the characters themselves we're fantastic. The world just felt so fleshed out and I love everyones interactions and development. *Sighs* I'm a sucker for interesting characters, plots (even if they don't always make sense), and emotional interactions (probably why I also enjoyed Babylon 5 as a kid)
Anyways, thank you so much for the fantastic video. I can definitely see why people ship Bashir and Garak. Sorry for the long comment

I haven't watched any other star trek than DS9, and watched it because it was the most liked? I'm also surprised Basheer isn't liked? I'm only at season 3, and he's my favorite character :D

I adore DS9, which at its best was one of the best space operas ever. It is my current fave TREK although DSC may just de-throne it. But honestly (and this has nada to do with shipping) it frustrates me no end how little we learned about Bajor and the Bajorans. Honestly, we learned an enormous amount about Cardassia--their culture, institutions, traditions, view of the world, etc. Yet about the Bajorans--nothing but a few details that never cohered. Honestly, this was supposed to be a people defined by their faith yet even by series' end I still could not tell you want their faith entailed! How did they view death? Do they have a concept of "sin" and what might that concept be? I don't know.

I’m just getting into TNG, so it’ll be a while till I get to DS9, but I guess this has a lot of parallels to Stormpilot.

Great video! I'm curious though; what are your views regarding Star Trek: Voyager? Specifically about Captain Janeway ships, lack thereof, and the debate about her sexual orientation.

As I was watching DS9 as a kid I wanted Julian to get with Jadzia, but looking back now I really wish this ship had become canon. (Though most likely if it had, I wouldn't have been allowed to watch it.)

Ds9 is my favourite Trek, Garashir is my Trek OTP together with Spirk (I can't choose between the two) and I think it's one of the biggest lost chances of television. So much potential wasted like that is so sad.
