  • New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has stood by her previous comments that the country will become a republic, saying that she thinks it won't be "quick or soon" but it will happen “over the course of my lifetime”.
She also reflected on conversations she had with Queen Elizabeth II about motherhood and leadership.

What the heck has a president to do with a republic? Why do you think you'd have to have a president, or that there would be "yet another level" of government? What nonsense...
And what is the monarchy for you other than another UNELECTED level of government?
Primarily, you have a parliamentary system, and a president in such a system is just a representative figure rubber-stamping legislative processes. You can also just leave out that office and have the head of government also be head of state. It's up to you. But keep in mind that you have NO say in who that opera king in London is, because in a monarchy, you are not the sovereign of the country, whereas in a republic you are.

I think you have this confused young jojo.
A president is not mandatory, it also doesn’t half to take over from the PM. For example, Ireland is a republic independent nation, they have a PM and a president. The PM runs the country and the president is more like an ambassador, don’t think he has any real power (like the king of England).
But the fact you’re under the crown, means you DO have an unnecessary level of government governing you.

I wouldn’t underestimate the importance of the relationship of Maori with ‘Queen Victoria and her successors’. ‘The Crown’ is not just some ephemeral synonym for ‘the government’. It is clear in the Treaty of Waitangi that that relationship is both specific and personal.
Whilst a Republican leaning Kiwi myself, I still see value both in the constitutional arrangement and the relationship. I also think that it is vital that the Māori perspective is front and centre in any debate we have. The gains of the last three decades are far too critical to imperil and the realities of a Republican government when we have no written Constitution require a lot of consideration. We are a long way from a solution to that and while the former PM, Sir Geoffrey Palmer has his draft, I am more than cautious about his ivory tower experimentation. He is infamous amongst officials for declaring that the inclusion of reference to the Treaty of Waitangi in State Sector legislation was essentially meaningless in law. It proved to be otherwise.

I also value having a non political Head of State who's role is to ensure that there is a legitimate PM to lead a government that needs to act within the bounds of the constitution. Since the time of Queen Victoria (and arguably since George III) Canada and New Zealand have had dedicated Monarchs who put their duty first, they serve. Looking south to the great Republic to our southern boarder during the last election, I didn't see politicians putting their country first. I saw violence, selfishness, greed, and anger. I also sensed genuine instability if President Trump wanted to use his power of Commander in Chief to prevent the peaceful transfer of power. My view is that our Realms deserve better - and that we have a better system of Government. Hopefully CANZUK can move forward - as I would be very excited to grow the relations between our nations.

While some similar countries in the Caribbean may cut that tie in the years to come, it’s not a surprise. Their relationship to the UK was more complicated and there are still grievances. The other day she was dressed up in some wearable arts clothes being a model on the runway the other day I don't know if she actually does a job properly. Shes been on our tv more than any other prime minister. If it's not that she's banning rubbish lol first it was plastic bags in which they still have plastic bags just with writing on them saying reuse me, people used to reuse and return the ones she banned, so not really banning plastic bags, then it was vegetable wrapping banning but still they had plastic bags for collecting veges so not really banned and last week it was a ban on takeaway containers, the takeaway shops had no clue it was totally disorganized, no warning and so they're like how are we supposed to sell our food with no containers when they are all sold out at the wholesalers, once again putting businesses in a really risky situation because then how do they sell their goods and make money. Like how much praise can one give themselves for banning individual rubbish items that could be solved once with implemented soft plastic recycling systems but instead choose to spend 360 million on television station merging which she loves being on, she's amazingly a terrible prime minister. Anything she wants to do, I can guarantee, the opposite is the best idea.

She’s a decent PM when she actually does the job, but saying NZ will be a republic when literally 5 years ago there was a vote to remove the Union Jack from the flag and everyone voted unanimously in favour of keeping it. If NZ was going to be a republic it would already be one, there’s been 200 years since the entire pakiha population was born in UK and it’s still not a republic. That’s the actual fact.

To be taken seriously on the world stage your voice needs power and NZ does not have the geographic or economic position to be able to say “in my lifetime it will be a republic” it should only be one if that decision does more for New Zealanders than remaining. No way in heck can New Zealand leave the commonwealth. If it left and decided to make new trade deals, it’s completely at the mercy of those countries making the deals, if all countries gave us bad deals, there’s no association to lobby it NZ would be on its own. And are based in service. A founding that politicians never have. Jacinda is the perfect example. If NZ does become a republic it will cause absolute havoc with the Māori, I doubt it ever will there would have to be overwhelming public support (60+ in agreement) and there simply isn’t.

IMO we should get rid of the monarchy, but keep the Commonwealth. Set up the Commonwealth in a way similar to the EU. Have a council of representatives from each country, with an elected President/Chairman. The Council would have certain limited power, but the countries retain their current individuality.
In this way we can maintain our close ties, economic and trade benefits, etc.
