Chigiri Island
A small island located about 4km south-southwest of Takehara Port. The entire island is owned by Toho Zinc Co., Ltd. Chigiri Smelter. There is a theory that it originally consisted of two islands, north and south, and the origin of the island name seemed to be torn into two islands. The fields were cultivated during the Kyoho era (1716-36), and there is a record of annual tribute payment. The entire island was acquired in 1902, and the Iwasa Mining Research Institute in Osaka (Director Iwao Iwasa, Doctor of Engineering) cut down the mountains of each of the north and south islands and reclaimed the space between the two islands to build a copper smelter. After that, copper smelting was carried out by the Hori Smelter, Hiromasu Smelter, and Imperial Mining Development under the commission of 1945. During the operation period of Showa Mining Co., Ltd. in the 10's of the Showa era, a large chimney to prevent smoke damage was built, and the number of employees is 600. After the war, it relaunched as a lead smelting factory by Toho Zinc Co., Ltd. in the same year, and started producing crude lead and electric lead using ore calculated from its own Taishu mine (Taishu Mine). Currently, the production of lead bullion using Australian ore is the largest in the country, and the product is used as a raw material for automobile batteries. It also produces silver bullions. The island is densely populated with factories and other buildings from the central part to the south, and the northern part is the residential area (company housing) for employees. Many of the employees commute by private boat from Takehara, etc., and there is also a town-run ferry from Shiramizu Port on Osakikamijima via Ikino Island. Since almost the entire island is company-owned, outsiders cannot enter without permission. (See "Shimadas")
Ikino Island
An island located approximately 0.4km north of Osakikamijima, almost in the center of the islands in the Seto Inland Sea. Stone axes, earthenware, and horizontal hole type stone chambers from the Jomon and Yayoi periods have been discovered on the island, and it is said that people had already lived there 2,000 years ago. During the Edo period, it was considered a pastureland of the Geshu clan and was called Mashima. Most of it was nationalized in the Meiji era. In 1945, a movement to rent a part of the national forest (13 town walks) began, and in the same year, Kyoto religionist Joenji Ashiri visited the island and built the same house. The people of Osakikamijima) are clearing the orange fields. In 2011, Showa Mining Co., Ltd. of Chigiri Island built 80 company housing units in Kusanoura, installed electric lights by submarine power transmission from Chigiri Island, laid water services, and in 2014, the land was sold from the national government. In the 21st year after the war, about 200 people from 8 towns and villages settled in the area designated as a prefectural settlement, and citrus cultivation became widespread. In 1935, the population was 279. In 1952, it was designated as a natural recreation village, and related facilities were improved. Currently, the only manned settlements are Fukuura and Kusanoura, and Tsukinoura is unmanned. On the north side of Kusanoura, there is a point where you can overlook Chigiri Island. (See "Shimadas")

@@walkerwalkaroundjapan I have just found info in japanese wiki about Toho zink company, so now I have enough info about Chigirijima. As for my country, I live in Russia , Saint-Petersburg, maybe you heard about my town. We have also some islands like yours in our town. Big shipbuilding plant occupies the whole island here. Another island is a chemical factory and the third one is water cleaning factory.

ありがとうございます😊契島は独特ですね。長崎の端島（軍艦島）は高い堤防に囲まれていますが、契島は波の穏やかな瀬戸内海らしく水際まで施設が建っています。なかなか他にはありません。
緑の多い島々の中で、島全体が工場の契島は何とも異様な姿ですね。不法侵入する人が度々いるらしいですが、マニア心をくすぐるのが分かります。

異様ですね。東シナ海の軍艦島＝端島よりメッチャ小さな島ですが、あちらはガッチリした防潮堤に囲まれているのに対し、こちらは大波のこない瀬戸内ということで、水際まで工場施設が張り出しているのが、余計に異様な感を与えてくれます。

おっしゃる通り、私も不思議に思いました。生野島の方に聞いたところによると、契島の従業員は、竹原（本土）と白水（大崎上島）の両方に住んでいるそうです。契島は大崎上島町ですので、白水港からは町営船ということ何でしょうか。
「ちぎり」島が正式名称かもですが、、「ちきり」島と言ってた気がする。小学生5年生まで生野島「草の浦」に住んでいました。父は、契島で働いていました。約30年前です。一般の人は「契島」には上陸できません。懐かしいもの見せていただいて、、ありがとうございます。

@@walkerwalkaroundjapan 小学校は戦前までじゃないですかね。私が生まれた頃は、もうなかったです。隣の大崎上島の今は廃校になった小学校に町営定期航路「さざなみ」に乗って通っていました。「福の浦」まで歩くのが辛かったです。帰りは同級生がいなくて、、いつもひとりぼっちで、結構、こどもには怖い道でしたね。
戦前まででしたか！それにしても福浦まで毎日往復するのは辛いですね。

瀬戸内の離島は本当に過疎化が激しいですね。一方で、結構船便の本数があったりして、本土や大きな島から家や畑の管理に通えるように思います。ですので、病院にも通いやすいので、UターンやIターンの方もチラホラおられますし、無くならない気もします。どうなりますか。
