I analyzed this song for my 11th grade Honors English class in 1986. My whole class was rocking out and the teacher started off angry that I had chosen such an "Awful" song. By the end of it, she wanted to listen to it again and go back and deconstruct everything on a whole different level than any other song presented in my class. Im 52 now and this song is still in my top 5 of all time.

Hey, that's a great story! I can totally picture it. I've been a metalhead for most of my life, and am now an English tracher. I love seeing the reaction in the class when I say "today we're gonna analyze some poetry" and then pull out Iron Maiden or Bruce Springsteen - and then hearing the students whistling or humming the tune when they leave class 😄

Yes. The beginning was the urgency for the drug, the middle represents the ecstasy of the drug, and the impending rise in tempo and volume is the follow up urgency for the drug once again. Pretty much explains the horror of drug addiction.

I was first introduced to air supply, bee gees, scorpions and classics etc, then went to gnr, journey, bon jovi, Aerosmith, and so on, then one day theres this movie Bohemian rhapsody, at first i didnt like the song then after a few tries i finally appreciate the meaning and beauty of the song, i listen songs of queen nonstop and my top songs are march of the black queen, bo rhap, innuendo, and prophets song, after that, for the first time my mind was blown away when i was first listening to led Zeppelin, stairway was a classic masterpiece then boom, kashmir played and boy i was like drugged, the song was so unique and has an iconic riff, then after a year finally the doors of metal opened for me, enter....... Black sabbath, war pigs, iron man, children of the grave, into the void and so on, then suddenly the auto play was on, which the song plays and i had no idea what it is, then i think "yeah why not? Its good to listen something new once in a while" the songs plays.......... Tewnt!!!!! Ten ten teewwwwwnt!!!! The riff was...... Damn mesmerizing, then the lyrics came i had no idea what its about, but i just kept headbanging to it, after the first part the slow mid section came, and idk how to explain it, it was like me, a human trying to understand whats this beautiful sound playing and i was in total awe, and i think you know the rest..........
      MASTER!!!!!!!!

The song can be broken down into four parts. The first part is the drugs telling the addict that they are under their control and that the addict needs them. The second part is slower and is the high the addict feels after taking the drugs. The third part is the addict talking to the drugs and asking basically "why are you doing this to me?" Finally, the fourth part is the drugs talking back to the addict and saying basically "too bad, I still control you" and the cycle starts again. At least that's my take on it.

As an addict for 2.5 decades and recovering, you got it. It’s a mind game going in cycles. The toughest part is denying the chemical from nicotine, alcohol, powder to behavioral addiction as sex, video games, etc. Addiction has overtook society in many ways from substance to other things by technology exploding. This has manipulated humans minds to obsess over this chemical feeling produced by overdoing activities. It’s simple on the surface to explain addiction but when I’ve been through it so long, dive deeper, it gets complex how we chase an illusion. Crazy how we can train or trick our minds to create chemicals to make us so called feel better. Then add substances to enhance the effect. People have issues with both or just one, substances or behavioral. This has us chase an imaginary friend, first rush, materials needed to look certain ways while financially not there, whatever it may be, it never has the answer, just a bad ending…
Edit: unless you understand you got a problem, get help and get the fck out. Actually knowing you have the problem is monumental. Still get help and stay with it. That was my BIGGEST fault. I understood and accepted being an addict. Yet kept thinking, I’ll be okay doing this myself. It never worked.

To be fair if you understand the science of how sound works and how much work the brain has to do to deconstruct a single sound wave into its component parts and hear the guitar, drums, bass, and vocals as separate and not jumbled together, it makes sense why people not used to the heavy distortion literally cannot hear the music and just hear noise.
You have to expose your brain to the sound of a heavy distortion guitar a while before it finally "clicks" when your auditory processing can pull it out as a separate instrument to send to your conscious mind that way. Until that happens your brain literally hears all the parts, vocal, guitar, and drum, as just one combined single sound and that's where the accusations of it just being noise come from.
The heavy distortion really confuses the brain's audio processing when it's not used to it and masks the signal. After you hear it enough times then your brain learns the patterns the instruments make and thus it can finally deconstruct the sound into component parts.

@@KAOTSOUKI i disagree, it's like they had a producer or friends who knew the addiction journey extremely well (they were just alcoholics then).I mean they're talking coke, heroin, or anything snorted and shot up specifically. The addiction journey starts just like the song powerful and kick ass, then depending on the drug but my guess is it's a similar problem, you get the mellow part that doesn't last very long, when you're actually enjoying the effects of the drug. For example, like with let's say - heroin. Then as the chill music is still playing i.e while you're still feeling the influence a creeping drum and guitar riff bring the agony of the sickness, the crawling craving, need for the drug.
Afterwards, we're at the end part where it's all gone to shit, heroin snorters or meth or whatever start shooting up shit, never you betray lyric is part you always returning to your master both dealer and drug, you never refuse to take it if offered, then life of death becomes clearer when you're in rehab for the 15th time in 10 yrs, have no surface veins that are visible, your brain turns to shit and you either end up damaged or 6 feet under where there are maggots on your corpse - feeding. If you hadn't died yet, you drift alone on numbered days, and your life truly is out of season. The end can be literal hell where the demonic laugh starts, welcoming you with lots of other less growly but still demeaning laughs coming, or just the everyday you know, look at that fool and what he's done with himself or people who gave up on you laugh at your weakness, stupidity, but mainly sickness.
Kinda ironic that they pretty much all turned out to be polyaddicts , self fulfilling prophecy of sorts, which is why James can't downpick anywhere near like he used to , Kirk and his mistakes, not being able to play a simple riff when shown by James , Lars going out of time so much Rebecca or Charismatic voice - I can't remember clearly right now as it's 4 am here - literally thought they were speeding up and slowing down on purpose . Jason (since Clifford Lee Burton passed away when their bus flipped for those who don't know the story if there are such ppl) hooked on pain pills and fuck knows what else when they split up before st Anger was made... James pissing on Layne Staley's death for being a junky at their live shows while he himself barely made it out and so on.
But yeah if you didn't know better you can say Lou Reed's Heroin is about flowers, White Rabbit is a tribute to Alice in Wonderland and MInistry's Dark Side of the Spoon album is just a spoof on Dark side of the Moon... Or 10's, Suicide Note 1, Good Friends and a Bottle of Pills, Hard lines Sunken Cheeks are respectively about - 10 packs of cigarettes, getting thru an illness with a little help from your friends and antibiotics, Christian salesmen... Bohemian Rhapsody is about murder not about Freddie coming out as gay and so on. Some songs have ambiguous lyrics , Master isn't one of them. It's a good intro to the stigma and laughs you will get when you're feeling like you're dying, so yeah sorry not even just addiction but very specific hard drug addiction, but I guess if it makes you feel better being angry at your your mom for not giving you that weed money, or your ex for dumping your ass, if your job is being a drug dealer and you get hooked, etc.
You can make a song that is called Anti Drug Anthem and the lyrics be literally just Drugs will fuck you up, I can already see ppl saying it was a fucking metaphor for your salary that you're hooked on like heroin, doesn't last long usually, you're happy in the beginning and then you crave it at the end of the month and the real meaning just goes over your head. But yeah, you do you boo :)

Master of Puppets was the 2nd stage of a rocket heading for interstellar space and superstardom as a band! And all you suckers doggin’ Lars are just punks who probably never played drums. Lars is the engine behind the band, just like every other drummer is for every band. Without a good drummer it all falls apart, it’s like a beautiful car with a missing engine. The melodic part being the high is so perfect. The first part is needing that fix because you're addicted. Then the melodic part kicks in and it's the high setting in because you just caved to the drug. Then you start coming down during the breakdown and everything starts getting dark again. During the solo you're going crazy because you need that high again and are getting withdrawal symptoms and you're head is getting out of control. Then you're back on the path again to seek your drugs and everything starts all over again. Story telling to perfection👌
