They’re like the angel and the devil on your shoulder 😂 Jason: “maybe a 40 yard head start isn’t a good idea for safety” Travis: “ITS FUCKING ELECTRIC”
Ahh the old days!! Hank Bauer from yes, the San Diego Chargers halls down during kick off and hits Ahmad Rashad of Minnesota Vikings on the 2o3 yard line and Rashad returned to the ground in the chalk of the back of the end zone - best hit when I was at a game.
I remember a few years back, when Jake Elliot got hurt during a kick off, by trying to tackle the return guy. LB Kamu Grugier-Hill took kick off duties, and it was pretty fun to watch. Kind of surprised Jason didn't mention this.
These guys are just great! With all of the ages that follow these boys, I wish Travis would talk like he does in his interviews. He obviously can talk and make his point without all of the F bombs...
I full out reject health being a reason for this rule. If the NFL were concerned with player health and reducing injuries, then they would get rid of turf, and go to grass. This is well documented.
LRZ has been spotted kicking so that is an option. Nearly all wingers in Rugby have to kick mainly out of hands though but he should have good leg power.
8:38 I really like the idea of putting the ball at the thirty, or even the thirty five, when kicked out of the end zone. I played special teams (and tight end), and what's the point if big leg gets it out of the end zone? No offense to big leg! Just put it inside the ten, and I can tackle the guy! 🤣
With fewer tacklers escaping their blockers on the kickup, it should be easier to juke them when they arrive. 40 yards advance notice of only one or two guys running at you, allow for a new kind of skill for both parties.
Travis said, “charggggge” 😂 Curious to see how this works out. All about keeping people safe, especially with dude being bigger, faster and for sure hitting harder! Looking forward to seeing how much of an impact this has on the game.
I sent you guys a message the last time you covered this subject. YOU HAVE TO BRING ON RON WOLFLEY TO TALK ABOUT THIS. He does radio and TV for the Cardinals. I like football for its energy and explosion but sometimes i miss the motion and momentum of rugby. Return is potentially a longer sequence of fast movements and dodging. I hope it will be good
Jason is my favorite and I think he is losing weight; I love the way he explains things for people who are not all that knowledgeable in football. 💚💚💚💚💚💚 62 💚💚 FOREVER!!!
If they’re worried about kicker safety, they can do the same thing they do when a holder has to come out to keep the ball on the kicking stand. Bring another guy to run/tackle for the kicker, and the kicker has to leave the field after he kicks and not participate in the play.
Jason : Enjoy yours and Travis's podcast, great job. But just curious I seen a bottle of Crown Royal behind you. Have tried the peach Crown Royal. Delicious!!!!!!!
I would love to see a video of you two reacting to Rugby videos 😂😂😂 that's my Christmas wish🤩 Suggestion: search for videos about The Springboks rugby team (back to back world champs, just like the chiefs' back to back superbowls🙌). It's the South African national team.❤
After a couple kickoff return TDs or long returns teams are just going to start kicking it for touchbacks. The 30yd line is not nearly as bad as a TD or having it returned to your side of the field.
Louis Rees-Zammit should totally take some kick-off reps. He has the boot, the speed, and is used to making tackles. And I would love kick-offs to actually mean something again.
Not a fan of the new rule. Devin Hester only made the HOF because of his returns. I know you also have his punt returns, but he was a beast returning the ball from kickoffs
With old rules if you’re playing against Devin Hester you just boot it out the end zone, why give him a chance. With the new rule teams playing against good returners have to decide if they risk allowing a return or just let the opposing team start at the 30.
The problem with the old kickoff is that they didn’t return it. It had all the potential to be amazing but ALL the teams chose not to do it, but there were still injuries from the run ups. I trust the collaboration of several special teams coaches to provide an alternative. Their jobs depend on it. Trust the process and enjoy the game.
Both teams can mess up. If the kicker messes up the ball goes to the 40. If the returner messes up the ball goes to the 20. This means that both the kicker and the receiver want an outcome where the ball is actually returned. This means the kicker putting the ball between the 20 and the goalline, and the receiver fielding the ball. That is the best scenario for both sides.
Think you guys missed the rule that if the ball touches ground short of the landing zone (20yd line to endzone) the play is called dead and the ball is placed at the 40. So they cant really squib it, they gotta aim for that 20 yard landing zone precisely or risk the ball going to the 40 (too short) or the 30 (too long)
@justingreenwald1916 they are only in the 4th quarter and the team has to be trailing.. like the poster before said, you have to alert the ref and other team. Such bullshit rules
Ya I don’t like that you have to declare your doing an onside kick . The surprise of an onside kick was always awesome to watch. Like pat mcafee’s surprise onside kick against the Texans was great. So kinda sucks that won’t be happening anymore.
@@PJMurphyNJ I’m sure they thought about all this , thee way they have it set up the returning teams blockers should be back at their own 30 and once the returner catches the ball they can release. Force them to go after blocks and leave it up to the returner to have the vision to know wehere to go
@therealbradd4533 why waste everyone's time? Just give the other team the ball on the 30 after every score. Kind of like the NBA gave up on center court tip offs after thec1st quarter. Just toss the coin, whomever wins decides if they want the ball on the 30 or differ... no more injuries, no more wasted precious seconds on a kickoff. If injuries was truly the reason, get rid of it like they got rid of the hitting

This is a great change Number one From back in the day and I'm 64 Kickoff used to be exciting because the kicker is simply couldn't kick it as far In the first preseason game seven of the eight kickoffs were returned Since the defense won't be running 40 yards like it used to there will be more regular tackles not the high impact collisions that used to destroy careers On top of that you will be able to actually see the younger players who aren't good enough to be starters be developed or you might see where you have a hole Baseball resisted all the changes that they implement last year for decades And it turned out the baseball changes were so successful that attendance went up 35% Football doesn't need more attendance but it's great that they're embracing a change that's going to be a good thing Plus it'll give my browns another excuse for not going anywhere We didn't understand the new rules
I love this new kickoff format to hopefully reduce injuries and making kickoff returns awesome again. The one thing I want the NFL to do is allow kickers to kick the ball through the uprights for 1, 2 or 3 points. The NFL cares about points on the board and this would do that. Go Chiefs!
If you're curious why a safety would kickoff just watch what happened to Deestroying in the xfl. He got insanely lucky but the fact of the matter is; if a guy hasn't been training to tackle their whole life, you really don't want them trying to figure it out in the field.
I think the new kickoff rule is going generate a lot of flags. It may be difficult for the kicking team to see when the ball is touched or caught. They are going to take off too soon and draw a flag. What is the penalty for that?
I see a few issues with this new "kickoff". I understand the NFL wanting to minimize injuries from the massive collisions that happen routinely on the more traditional kickoff. But aren't they increasing the chances of injuries among specialty players, i.e. kickers. If the kicker gets injured tackling (I'm lookin at you Browns Fans) teams do not have a backup kicker. Increasing the possibility of kickers having to tackle inevitably increases the chances of a specialty player being injured. Also, this preseason the average return has been to the 28. I would think smart coaches would just go ahead and kick it out of the back of the end zone and give up the 2 yards beyond the average, placing the ball on the 30, therefore eliminating the chance of a big return.
@@stretch493 oh thank you for responding! I was watching and thinking don’t they need to give them yards? (Knowing the rules were prob different) Maybe I’ll learn a bit more this year 😊 Thank you!
I love how people against the new kick off rules never mention the fact that we were just watching automatic touchbacks every time 😂 the new rule brings returns back to the game!
I think it would be funner and safer if both teams lined up together, held hands, and skipped across the length of the field and then just spotted the ball at the 25 to start the game. Ceremony would be new but celebrated by humanitarians everywhere.
The kickoff should have to land on the field. If it goes out of bounds before bouncing in bounds, opposing team gets 1 point. If you down it in the end zone, you start on the 1 yard line.

I imagine it’s related to gambling
It’s not primarily safety, it’s getting rid of every kickoff being a boring touchback.
Turf is lower body injuries. Kickoff is hard hits and gives brain injuries. Different issues that both should be addressed

Number one
From back in the day and I'm 64
Kickoff used to be exciting because the kicker is simply couldn't kick it as far
In the first preseason game seven of the eight kickoffs were returned
Since the defense won't be running 40 yards like it used to there will be more regular tackles not the high impact collisions that used to destroy careers
