Depending on when “at the start of the game” is, I could imagine it going like this: France declares war on England, Portugal aids their ally; France wins the war, takes Ceuta in the peace deal. Before Castille gets a chance to attack Granada, France fabricates a claim from their new north African province and takes over the last remains of Al-Andalus.
7:58 I love how, when he conquers stuff while having an Italian primary cylture, the provinces get their greek names, but as soon as he switches the culture to greek, the same provinces get turkish names...
At the same time it's definitely a "player controlled" move. Cutting AI countries in half and splitting them away from their subjects is a great strategy even though it does cause some pretty bad border gore in most cases.
Back in the olden days *cough* beforerulebritannia *cough* the game considered Byzantium strong enough to rival Ottomans so Athens was an easy game because Ottomans would always support your independence pretty easily.
@@theevilmoppet except back in those days, ottomans almost always got a mission which gave them a claim on constantinople, and would often invade byzantium b4 you could get them to support independence, and even if you got their support, they would quickly break the alliance cuz they would then want your land

You'd get 3 options for missions if you didn't have an active one, and you'd choose one via checkbox, and if it was a take a province mission, you'd get a free claim. The ottomans almost always had 1 at the start of the game to take constantinople. Nowadays, you actually have to work to take it

The most widely used strat to get independence is to have the ottomans support independence and then gain more power by conquering the little countries, and then use the mamluks (If their the ottomans rival) to fight the ottomans. I started a Byzantine run yesterday that’s been 70 years of pain, misery, loans, and more loans. I can’t comprehend how the Ottomans got totally BTFO’d so fast in your run.

I remember once I tried to succeed as Athens to get that university achievement ... beyond my skill in IronMan, evidently. Even when I somehow beat the Ottos, Venice decided it was sick of my sh!t and destroyed me. One of the tougher European starts ... or so I thought! I can't believe how easy this was for you!

I had a game as GB where Castile got PU's over both Aragon and Portugal, and subsequently lost them, where Novgorod allied Kazan and Denmark and beat Muscovy, where the Ottomans instantly suicided themselves into Venice, Serbia and Byzantium via the Albanian guaranties and alliances, and where Cleves got Burgundy and the Emperorship. (They lost the emperor title to Austria later though.)
To be fair, a random hre minor inheriting burgundy is completely normal for my campaigns. No matter what strategy I follow, if I attempt to interfere in the succession they survive half the game. If I ignore them, a random minor gets them..
@@j1r2000 I've tried it as austria, aragon, hungary, castile, provence, bohemia, milan, savoy, tuscany. None of them have given it to me. It's been 2 years at least since I successfully did it as austria and castile

@@j1r2000 oh I do, I mainly play as aragon or milan. I'll marry and ally, then leave a diplomat with them to keep relations high. RNG just absolutely hates me. Whenever I try to marry them they keep getting heirs, Whenever I ignore them, the random opm who married them inherits.
I just want to know why in my games the ottomans walk around with 50k stacks, but in literally everyone elses game, they walk around with 7k stacks that are easily wipable.
Recreate Alexanders empire in this campaign, but you must do it IN THE SAME AMOUNT OF YEARS AS HE DID :D (or just constantly be at war, whichever is more realistic)
Yeah, knocking out the Ottomans free's up the AI in three regions (Eastern Europe, Russia and the Middle East) to just cut loose and do whatever the fuck it wants as it no longer has the proverbial sword of damocles that is the ottomans hanging over their heads.
7:00 OK, here's a thing I discovered and I feel like no pro gamer mentioned it: go into your save games folder, save your current game and any then just copy your game in your save games folder so that you have a backup. I thought it might be to obvious to say but eventually it will help someone out... And i don't mean the actual autosaves, i'm talking about copys that you create yourself
You just have to admire how wonderfully random EU IV can be. Truely, no game is ever the same. And in fairness, there is nothing so hilarious like one little german minor getting the Burgundian Inheritance and suddenly becoming one scary big boy on the map.
Sometimes you just get lucky and the AI collapses. My Athens game the Ottos were very much kicking and I had to give them Constantinople and move to Egypt to get the Academical Achievement.
Holy shit. As a Lüneburgian myself, I am proud of the AI For those that don't know, Lüneburg was a Hanseatic city that produced a lot of salt and as such was pretty important back in the day. (Almost) all of the old buildings have survived the world wars and the truce that ended WWII was signed very close to it. Yeah, pretty cool city
As Athens you can get Indipendence supported by the ottomans and give them constantinopel in the peace deal. With your claims through your mission tree, you can attack the mameluks with the help of the ottomans and get the holy land to form Jerusalem. But if you just want to conquer the balkans that strat might be to ottoman friendly xD

Now this is Eu4 without the Ottomans. Whenever I screw the ottos at the start of any campaign , the game is casually breaks like this i think.
