That last bit about find the cost of freedom is a tribute to the veterans who died in Vietnam and a protest against the injustice of the war. I'm glad you let that play.
This wasn't the theme song of Woodstock at the time Woodstock actually took place, because Joni Mitchell wrote it after the festival, but it became representative of the festival once people actually heard the song. Mitchell had wanted to go to Woodstock but was unable to and really regretted it when she saw and heard what it had been like, so she wrote this song after the fact in celebration of it. The lyrics are really great, as are all Mitchell's lyrics. As others here are noting, her versions are also really good. There's the studio version and a few live versions from her you can listen to and view and they're all good, really good.
Actually She wrote it during Woodstock while in her hotel room in New York, her agent forbade her to go because she was scheduled for Johnny Carson at the same time. I was at Woodstock my brother and I hitchhiked from Indiana we among the unfortunate ones who bought tickets. I joined the marines the following year and served two tours in Vietnam, what a ride.
She didn't go cause she had to do Dick Cavett s talk show the next day....funny that Jefferson Airplane and Stephen Stills and David Crosby performed at Woostock but made the show....and it's on youtube....Jefferson Airplane played 3 songs then jammed for the remaining show and Cavett couldn't thank the guests cause it was like and 8 min jam so closing credits are shown as the Airplane kept playing.....TOO BAD you played this from top 40 garbage radio when you could have done 4 Way Street Live version of either Southern Man or Carry On but requesters always do the wimpy stuff
Yes, that's also a great version that was also recorded in 1970. It charted #1 in the UK and reached #23 on the Billboard Top 100 in the US. "Woodstock" is the only song I know of that was covered by two bands with two completely different takes and both became hits in the same year.
I love their version because they found a beautiful compromise between Joni's version and CSN&Y. The Matthews Southern Comfort cover brings back the strongest memories for me.
Joni's version has a more haunting melancholy feel to it. I got to visit the site of the original Woodstock in Bethel NY this summer. I can watch this video which is from the movie and say, "I was there!"
Joni wrote this just after the event. Nash was her partner at the time, so she said he could do it as well. Both versions came out about the same time. Love Joni's work, but this blows hers out of the water due to the harmonies.
The boys certainly put some testosterone into the song, but what's interesting is that I only really began to notice the lyrics when Joni sang it. I think I was more into the beat and power of the song when CSNY&Y sang it, not really noticing the lyrics. Regardless, both versions are fantastic in their own way. The guys and Joni are certainly some uber-talented musicians and songwriters.
CROSBY, STILLS, NASH, & YOUNG, "WOODSTOCK". The Festival and Greatest Concert Ever. Was August 15, 16, and 17, 1969. Joni Mitchell wrote this in 1970. Which she was unable to attend because of prior commitment. It's till this day one my favorite songs. CSN&Y cover recording of WOODSTOCK has become Iconic. Cudos for Joni Writing it and as you said she gives you her acoustic flavor. CS&N made it their song. That being said it took all involved for it to be a dedicated tribute to a generation. 🎶✌🎵 PEACE...
Yes originally done by Joni Mitchell, however, my favorite rendition and cover was performed by the band: Matthew's Southern Comfort, studio version. Give it a listen, I think you may agree
Another great choice my dear! For one of their very best songs, try Wooden Ships, which the Jefferson Airplane also does a great cover of. Utterly great track and I know you would love both versions. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
Nice! This version of the song is the one from the movie. The studio recording is slightly more polished up. That's the version of the song that became the single way back when. So, strictly speaking, you still haven't heard the cover. But don't worry because all these versions are great. Each version brings something different to the song. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young dropped a dozen or more classic songs back then. Their first two albums -- "Crosby, Stills & Nash" and "Déjà Vu" -- are crazy good. You've only scratched the surface with them so far. When you're ready for more from them, check out some of these classics -- "Helplessly Hoping", "Teach Your Children", "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes", "Long Time Gone", "Almost Cut My Hair", "Ohio", "Helpless" -- among many others.
RIP David Crosby. This was a video of everyone setting up for the Woodstock concert. They weren't expecting a lot of people but 500,000 people showed up and there was no violence, just a wonderful weekend of music, peace and love. Joni Mitchells version is beautiful but I really like CSN&Y version better. thanks for posting.
I was in the army then. I saw the Woodstock documentary (movie) in Germany (talking dubbed in German), Finland (Finnish subtitles), and the US (with all the nudity removed). Only the music was the same.
I was At Woodstock and it was a Blast. We came there 3 days before it started and there were a lot of people already there. Still have my Photos and Tickets. Good Times !!!
Two "far-out" happenings s in America ROCKED the world in the "summer of '69: the Moon Landing, and Woodstock, ...and in both events, we came in PEACE! Oh yeah, also the "Miracle Mets" took the Series later that fall.
This is a different lead vocal track that was not used on the album or single version of the song. This must be from some box set or something. The instrument tracks are the same and it sounds like the harmony vocals are the same, but this is definitely an alternate take of Stephen Stills' lead vocal and a different mix. Joni's version is haunting and deliberately paced. It's just her voice and a Wurlitzer electric piano. The other great version of this was a Number One hit song in October 1970, done with peaceful groovy hippie vibes by Matthew's Southern Comfort. You definitely want to hear that one!
My favorite line from the song is "And I dreamed I saw the bomber jet planes Riding shotgun in the sky Turning into butterflies Above our nation" In those days there were bomber planes in the air 24/7.
Yep. The Vietnam War was raging, protestors were in the streets, and U.S. B-52s were conducting massive bombing campaigns that were killing thousands of Viet Cong soldiers but thousands of civilians too.
Matthews Southern Comfort, a band from the UK does a great version of this song as well! This CSN & Y version is new to me! I obviously heard them sing this song before, but it is not this version! It gets confusing with so many versions and so many styles for one song, but we music lovers dig all the variety! There are so many background stories to songs and artists, and it's hard to believe what versions are true! Goodbye!
HI ANGELA! 😊 YOU HAFTA DO JONI'S SONG OF COURSE, SHE DIDN'T GET A CHANCE TO GO TO THE FESTIVAL CAUSE SHE DID A TV INTERVIEW THE DAY BEFORE SO THEY HAD TROUBLE GETTING PEOPLE IN SO SHE HAD GONE HOME AND YESSSS WROTE A GREAT SONG TO THE SHOW AND CALLED IT ( WOODSTOCK ) 😊 IT'S ON HER 70 ALBUM ( LADIES OF THE CANYON ) BUT ALSO IT'S A GREAT VIDEO CONCERT CLIP OF HER ( 70 BBC SHOW ) AND SHE TELLS A SHORT STORY BEFORE SHE GOES INTO IT, IT'S SUPER, AND SHE'S JUST 27 AT THE TIME SO 😊
You should do Joni's version on Friday Night is Lady's Night. She sort of wrote it for CSNY, who performed at Woodstock, and the two versions are really different.
So Joni Mitchell wrote the song but CSNY released their cover before Joni released her original. Come to find out she couldn't play at Woodstock due to scheduling but CSNY did play at Woodstock. Joni's boyfriend at this time was Graham Nash so obviously things worked out with the song.
Fun fact half a million people gathered from all over the world for a 3 day music festival on max yasgurs farm in the catskill mtns circa 1969 and not one arrest was made
Wow, I've seen a lot of footage over the years of Woodstock but I don't think I've ever seen this footage of the very beginning and building of the stage. It is a truly massive proportion as far as it's build. 👍🏻👍🏻 Thanks, two thumbs up!
The sad thing is that there are probably no bad songs from Joni or CSNY to have to avoid. You're finding all the great music that will feed your soul and keep you in good stead, and company. Love your dancing too. Get on up! Peace and Love.
True. This isn't the album version, although it's close. And the snippet of music at the end is a completely different song, "Find the Cost of Freedom."
HERES MY SONG ANGELA 😊 FOGHAT FROM THEIR ALBUM ( NIGHT SHIFT ) : TAKE ME TO THE RIVER , ORIGINAL DONE BY (AL GREEN ) IN 74 😊I KNOW YOU ENJOYED( SLOW RIDE ) SO YEAH, PRETTY SURE YOU'D LIKE IT. YOU TAKE GOOD CARE BABY, KEEP DOING WHAT YOU DO! 😊
I like Joni Mitchells original version of this song, and this one is good too, but, going right back to 1970 when I first heard it, the version by Matthews Southern Comfort is the one that does it for me.
Bravo, Angela this one went deep! Much appreciation, thank you. You know you can find the Woodstock film on DVD and get a feel for the whole event. Love both versions, btw. 🕊️🎸🎹🌹💕
Nobody's done any cover of a Ms Mitchell song that I find "better," cuz Joni has been my fav singer/songwriter/singer/musician of all time. However, CSNY did do a damn good job with this cover (Joni had been lover of Crosby for a short time, and was now living with Graham Nash!), and unlike Joni's original, is a great party song IMO.
There were some EPIC performances at Woodstock worth checking out. It was one of the first concerts for CSN and they quickly won the crowd over with Suite Judy Blue Eyes. Santana also became instantly famous when the Woodstock movie came out, featuring their performance of Soul Sacrifice. Then theirs Jimi Hendrix's rendition of The National Anthem and The Who with See Me Feel Me. Just to name a few..
I like this version better than Joni's. You should watch The Woodstock Movie. Amazing footage of the event and performances. Its over 3 hours long, covering the entire 3 day festival from stage construction to the last people leaving and picking up trash on their way out. Everyone music lover should watch The Woodstock Movie at least once.
Ladies Night would be the perfect time to give the Joni Mitchell original a listen Angela. Her vocal is is spare, chilling and echoes a loss of a dream that died once realized. I can never get enough of the CSNY cover for the reasons you state, plus that ragged solo from Neil Young as he strangles the notes from his guitar. It is very fitting and defines his signature sound. Listen to Neil Young paint sonic pictures on these great songs. CORTEZ THE KILLER LIKE A HURRICANE DOWN BY THE RIVER & SOUTHERN MAN. You won't be disappointed. Enjoy.
Enjoy your reactions and would love to see you react to Let it Roll by Little Feat. A great driving tune with an incredible performance in the live video.
with the loss of 3 great insightful leaders , the struggle for civil, human rights , anti war protesting sometimes physical pushback from most in the nation and the fact that if you were at least 19 and couldn't afford, get a deferment you would be drafted into the service and to a war that eventually most did not support. the music was like a refuge.
Oh well, Bob has enough pain to keep him happy. LOL But pretty much all of the rest of us grew up with Jimi Hendrix version of All along the watchtower. Truly magical in the mood that it will put you in. No one had ever played an electric guitar before by Jimi Hendrix played on, he's single-handedly blew the world away with his talent and inventedness.
My preference is the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young version as I watched it live at Woodstock in 69. Best Thoughts to You on your musical journey as You Navigate your way through the change between the notes.
To me this version is better than Joni's original. But Joni wrote it after Woodstock so it couldn't be the theme song for the festival. In any event, if I had to pick a song to symbolize the Woodstock festival, it wouldn't be this one. It would be Freedom by Richie Havens.
That last bit about find the cost of freedom is a tribute to the veterans who died in Vietnam and a protest against the injustice of the war. I'm glad you let that play.
Oh, gosh. Joni’s original is sooo good, but it’s a different mood entirely. Joni’s is contemplative. CSNY is celebratory. Equal.
This wasn't the theme song of Woodstock at the time Woodstock actually took place, because Joni Mitchell wrote it after the festival, but it became representative of the festival once people actually heard the song. Joni wrote this and I love her live version on piano
Both versions are absolutely great.
500,000 people living in the mud for 3 days, jamming to the music, and NO VIOLENCE!
I'm 63. I only know this version. Never knew it was a cover song!
A great song about an important event in rock music history!
Joni wrote this just after the event. Nash was her partner at the time, so she said he could do it as well. Both versions came out about the same time. Love Joni's work, but this blows hers out of the water due to the harmonies.
And hers was more folky, theirs is more rock.
Woodstock... Hysterical music festival. ✌️
My gosh, I haven't seen one of your reaction videos in a bit. You look sooo Beautiful ❤️ love 💕 your dancing too!
You should definitely react to Joni Mitchell's version. There's a live version where she gives an interesting story behind it.
Yep. Gotta look for the version on RUclips that has "(Live In Studio 1970)" in the title.
Nope should do Southern Man from 4 way street or Carry On not top 40 stuff....their best stuff was live
These guys had some of the best harmony vocals ever!
The version by Matthews Southern Comfort is by far the best version.
