I made 2 of the Kelly bag from Babylon Leather. I made a large purple for my daughter and the medium caramel for myself. They turned out wonderful. The leather is so soft. It wasn’t hard to do either. I just ordered 2 more kits for gifts to family. You did a great job. 🥰❤

Omg yes mine(authentic) has a odor inside too! Idk what it is bcus none of my other *jklux* bags have an odor. Called lv and they said it was normal and that I could wipe the inside with a damp cloth.I also thought the lining was suede but it is actually microfiber so I'm going to look up ways to remove odors out of microfiber cus the smell stops me from using it as much.

Looking at the website the leather is top grain which is the second best the best one is full grain which can last a life time , while top grain last 10-20 years from constant use but top grain can last a life time if used moderately and looked after making sure it’s cleaned, conditioned and apply water repellent. imo top grain is fine because kelly isn’t something that used daily also it would just be an overkill getting full grain.

I am of 2 minds about this kind of project. 🤔
1) i believe accessibility is really important in society. And baby steps that can get people interested in real craftsmanship is crucial for the future life of any craft. Explore, try it yourself, low cost and low fail rates really encourage people to experience new things - which society desperately needs.
However......
2) as a leather craftsman, this is incredibly reductive to the amount of time, energy and work that goes into handmade goods. 9+hrs JUST for the sewing. It doesnt include the cost of pattern making, leather working, hardware prep, etc that goes into making a project THAT simple to put together.
This is basically the paint by numbers version of leather work. Its lovely for those who just want to dabble....but i really want people to know that so much work goes into real leather crafts. And small businesses dont get paid by the hour. We only get paid what society believes our work is worth. And most dont think its worth much, especially when its reduced to such simple terms. Please do your research on small craftsman, small businesses and support accordingly.
Is the kelly bag worth $20k+? No. Its not. Its all hype and fame.
Is a hand made leather bag worth $120? No. No craftsman could support their business at that price. There is a middle ground and any good craftsman should be able to answer whatever questions one can come up with in the process of making a handmade item.
Just some food for thought.

I completely agree with you! I really hope my video didn't come across as disrespectful, and I apologize if it did. That was not my intention at all! As a pattern maker and sewist myself, I know how much time it takes to make a piece of clothing from scratch, and it does make me upset when seamstress's works are not valued, so I agree with your point and understand where you're coming from.
I wrote a blog post about this project (coralinestreet.com/blogs/coraline-street/my-journey-hand-sewing-a-leather-bag), and since that wasn't a video showing the entire process, I made sure to mention how the end result was only possible because of the leather bag kit I received, that already came pre cut and finished. I wouldn't be able to make a bag that looks this good without the help and work of skilled leather crafstmen that prepared all the materials for me. I guess it's clear that the 9 hours I mention during the video only covered the sewing process, but I should have been more clear in the video about the fact that I wouldn't be able to make it by completely by myself. It would take skills that I currently do not have.
A big part of the prices from designer items come from the marketing and name tag attached to it, and even though that's not something that entices me a lot, I understand the appeal it has for some people. I don't like to diminish the value of those items in my videos (as in, I usually only say these pieces are out of my budget instead of saying "it's insane this brand is charging this much for this item") because if there are people willing to pay $30K+ for a bag, then there is value in it for them. But I truly hope more people see value in the art that is creating something from scratch, and support small businesses instead.
P.S. The $120 price tag isn't for a finished bag, per se, is only the cost of the materials for this specific project. That's how I usually make my thumbnails for videos like this, adding the cost of materials for the project. When I try to recreate a designer piece of clothing, the price tag is only for the materials. It doesn't take into consideration the cost per hour of my work, that usually consists in studying the piece, creating the pattern, making a sample, and then teaching everyone how they can try to recreate it. My viewers are also makers, so I'm telling them how much it would cost to make one at home, not how much it should be sold for!
I AGREE with @redhairgrneyes. I make leather handbags and the time it would take to make this kit for someone to sew with no experience, with everything finished except for the hand sewing including designing a pattern, cutting ,skiving the leather, punching the exact amount of holes, adding interfacings for structure, finishing the edges, adding hardware, and a mock up bag takes way more time than this . People have to realize once you make hole in leather thats it unlike fabric. If you make a mistake you have to cut another piece. Good leather crafting tools are expensive. Whole grain leather is expensive so waste and mistakes cost time and money. Not to mention if you're doing a drop in or birthing lining.Thats like making the bag twice. Saddle stitching is slow and some artists make sure every stitch is perfection with the right amount of tension in each one. I would charge a good amount for even a kit because of all of that. Great job maybe this will perk your interest in leatherwork!

Only wanted to put in a note for viewers to consider the other side of the equation. I think it would be a lovely video to see you design your own bag! Pattern making is such an under estimated skill that more people need to appreciate it and what you are doing with your channel is a great way to get that info out to people. Each persons unique perspective brings such a lovely spin to a design, seeing you make your own bag would be lovely! I'm a deep dive kind of person and my brain enjoys all the little details and aspects that lead to a final product. I think that's why I became a leather crafter. I don't make things for the final product, I make things for the journey of making something. I'm weird like that. Hehe 🙈

I can relate to the thick glasses. My correction finally reached -11.75. Luckily(?), I got cataracts fairly young, and had them removed and got lens implants. Now my correction is -0.75. I don’t even have to wear glasses now, except for reading. Love the bag!
I'm glad everything worked out in the end! Not needing glasses after having such a strong prescription must feel like a dream, even though the circumstances weren't ideal. My grandpa also got cataracts and now doesn't need glasses anymore. Maybe one day that will be my future, too. But so far, I wasn't brave enough to get lasik 😂 The thought of surgery gets me too anxious.

I do leather bags and wallets and shofar straps and powerlifting belts, etc. I did a lot of these things cause my son wanted the powerlifting belt, and my friend wanted a strap for her shofar. So I had to figure these things out on my own. I even designed a small purse based on one I got from Goodwill (the woman told me it was so cute). I told her I was ripping it apart for the hardware. I had to maintain my manliness. Funny, right.
Anyway, it's cool you made a bag from a kit. Next time, try hand cutting it all with a razor, and punching all the stitching holes. That's a whole new world. And don't forget, you have to sand the edges, bevel them, and then paint or use tokonole to finish the edges. Then get to measuring the thread. It's a lot more work, and if you make a mistake, say cutting the leather wrong, or punch a hole offset, you will have to cut another piece and start that one over. It can get frustrating. So getting all your parts cut and punched is way easier, next time do it from scratch from a pattern (that you designed) and feel that experience.

I'm following you now so maybe I can give you a sign when I have a few things to show off ;) I used Decovil to make the Alcantara feel like a thick leather which made for a firm bag that holds it shape, and I would definitely recommend Decovil for future projects :D it's easy to work with
