My eagle eyed followers will have noticed that I haven’t been active on social media for the past few weeks, this is because I have been in hospital with a spinal injury. The Dr’s are saying 13 weeks recovery but God willing I will be up and driving sooner than that.
Please look after yourselves and don’t take your health for granted

Hey Yian I can relate to you 100%. 5 years ago I went through a period where I was going through exactly what you are and the doctors and hospital wouldn’t help me.
I had this excruciating pain in my lower back and leg and for months they just said I had sciatica, even though I know it was something much worse and nobody would listen to me.
I couldn’t walk, move, shower, put my socks on or get dressed etc.
Everytime I moved, I was screaming from the pain.
After months of fighting with the health services, they finally decided to scan me and they found a tumour trapped under my nerves in my spine.
They finally gave me a 10 hour surgery to remove the tumour and thank god it was benign and to this day, I’m ok.
I had no family history of this kind of thing and I’m fit and healthy too.
I can also relate to the scan asI felt exactly the same and it did feel like I was buried alive.
It will take time, but stay strong and positive.
    Get better soon.
    Michael 🙏🏻

I had to have one to scan my heart. I was in for 20mins. Then they pulled me out and put my back in for another 20mins. I’m 6’4” and 106kg and they strapped me down. They aren’t the nicest thing. It’s weird as well how your body seems to vibrate in different areas when it makes different noises.

Diagnosed with 2 bulging disks around L4/L5 area.

Hi Yianni, wishing you a speedy recovery.
I am taking the time to comment because you have misunderstood certain aspects of the care you received. I am GP and also work half the week in A+E.
    1. You should have listened to your body, I think it was unwise for you to be driving for that period of time and then going on to play football given that you had some symptoms. But you weren’t to know.
    2. The ambulance service is massively overstretched at present. For example, we have elderly patients who have sustained a fall who are awaiting 8 hours+ for an ambulance in some parts of the country. It is terrible. The ambulance dispatchers have to be more stringent in order to help those who need it urgently. Even if you had an ambulance called out, you would have waited for at least 4 hours in North London. You would then have been asked to walk downstairs to get into the ambulance. So getting to hospital would have been exactly the same process whether it be ambulance or being driven in by family. The pros of being driven in by family are that you will get seen to much faster because you can go ASAP. You would have been in pain for a significant period of time waiting for an ambulance- I hope this makes sense.
    3. You can have a private GP if you have private healthcare. If you went on the NHS you wouldn’t have to see a GP face to face, insurance companies only require a letter of recommendation or referral, so it could’ve been a telephone consultation instead
    4. You did not need an MRI scan. An MRI scan for back/nerve root irritation is only indicated to rule out cauda equina syndrome- please have a read of what this is. MRIs are needed to confirm the diagnosis so that surgery can take place promptly, as the longer the spinal cord is compressed, the less likelihood of a full recovery. Without leg weakness (you couldn’t move because of pain, not weakness), bowel or bladder symptoms or symptoms in both legs, cauda equina syndrome is not a worry. I am sure you would have the necessary examinations by the doctors to further rule this out. The reason why an MRI is not needed is because it does not change management. Clinically the symptoms were suggestive of a disc bulge with nerve root irritation (possible sciatica). This is managed with painkillers, rest and physiotherapy. We tend to get scans only if it changes management, and as you saw in your experience, you had the MRI scan and then nothing changed, you went home with painkillers. I hope this makes sense.
You are in a position of influence and I think the above clarification may be helpful to you and your followers. I am happy to explain in further detail should you want to find out more. With everything you went through, bear in mind how utterly bombarded and stretched the NHS is in general.
    Regards

Yianni, I totally understand everything you have gone through. I manage prolapsed discs in my L4/L5/S1 region on a daily basis and have had a fully slipped disc twice before from exactly the same reason as you, long distance driving. Having been told i needed surgery and being utterly terrified, i got a second opinion by a Spencer Harland at the Spire in Solihull and was advised Not to have surgery at the age of 31 but have intense physio therapy to build the strength up in that region and support the vertebrae. From 3 times a week im now down to 1 session every 3 weeks of mobilisation/massage/traction and other than an occasional twinge in my leg if im tired im as normal as i could be. Its a long road with the rehab so i cannot emphasise just how important having a good, regular physio is with back problems like you have endured. Hang in there man and GTFO those Tramadol asap! 👍

Yan, I've been there at 26 years old. Sept 2015 this happened to me. 111 and 999 took 7 hours to get an ambulance after several pleading calls and got me to Northwick Park and they refused an MRI and discharged me. My disc had burst at L1 and L2 and legit paralysed me. Thankfully I met Mr Chatterjee from Barnet Hospital privately in Harley Street and got me in on the emergency operation list at Barnet based on a private MRI scan of my lower back. You were lucky you were able to lay down. I couldnt lay down or stand but i could sit which is annoying when sleeping (trying to) or showering. but I feel you on the toilet situ. I struggled with my MRI too at 6'4 and 135kg at the time. trick with MRI is to close your eyes and use the buzzing and clicking to breathe in 4 and 4 out. Get well soon.

Backs are no joke, I woke up with a normal stiff neck one morning, went to work and within an hour i couldn't move my neck at all, complete seized up and massive pain, shoulders, upper back, neck, arms even the back of my head all absolutely throbbing. somehow managed to drive home without being able to look left or right when pulling out. 5 osteopath sessions later and I could get back to it, 2 weeks of pain and all it was was some dodgy scar tissue from an old injury I didn't even know I had had teared by my shoulder blade. That was the day I realised that man, if a muscle can do that to me imagine what a spinal injury would do! get well soon, health is wealth indeed!

I had a herniated disc in my lumbar spine, a few years ago, and had same symptoms as you. I got facet joint injections and a nerve block injection into the intervertebral space, which had a miraculous effect on the pain (I was, basically, pain-free after the op). Highly-recommend Nana Osei; he practices out of The Spire in Harpenden and The Saxon Clinic in MK.
I'm slim and USED to big a typical man and refuse any offers of help in moving heavy objects, etc. Before my disc herniation, I foolishly unloaded a huge American-style fridge-freezer from a van, down some steps and into our utility room single-handed. That was probably the straw the broke the proverbial camel's back. These days, I'm always mindful of my back and don't hesitate to ask for help!
Hope you get better soon Yianni.

I woke up in Aug 2019 temporarily paralysed from the waist down and had to have an emergency discectomy on my L4/5 and S1 discs, well the surgeon ended up "nipping" my main nerve for my left side so it has now left me with 37% paralysis in my left side. I've been on 300mg Pregablin twice a day, 30mg Baclofen 3 times a day and 30/500mg Cocodamol since that time and I've had to go from driving manual to automatic as I can no longer use a clutch... The anxiety and depression that's come from it has really kicked me in the teeth at times but I still have my mind, that's one thing we'll never be able to lose, no matter how we feel or what happens (that and my dog) 👍🏻 Look after yourself man, hopefully you heal up 100%.

Wow, I'm always amazed how terrified people get during an MRI Scan. I've had numerous MRI's and fall asleep every time during the procedure. Guess I'm used to heavy noise. I know exactly where your coming from being laid up and not being able to do much. I've been there and it can get you down. You have to keep yourself positive somehow. Whether it's talking to friends, planning your daily meals or even a bit of reading. Plan things for the future when your fit and healthy again. The main thing is you look after yourself physically and most importantly "Mentally". I wish you all the best Yianni and a speedy recovery. Take your time and it'll all come good at some point. Take care for now mate.

I had this exact thing happen to me. I was a serving member of the army. Post tour in Afghanistan. Had a bit of a blast whilst over there and put my back out. My L5/S1 disk and 6 others exploded. Now I couldn’t move. Not even an inch. Anyway manned through for a week. Then it brought me to tears. Can’t sleep, can’t go toilet properly. And it’s when the doc at the med center said have you had a bowel movement I said no it takes me about half hour to even dribble piss. He said you need an operation you’ll end up poisoned from the inside. So anyway I had a long 7 hour operation and they replaced 2 and micro dissected the other 4 disks. I swear on my own life. I just remember the relief. I had a external exoskeleton on for 6 weeks couldn’t drive or walk without an aid. But yeah best decision I ever made was accepting the surgery. I don’t care what anyone says if you’ve not been through disk issues. When those disks go and your nerves are pinched. Your body just shuts down. By the sounds of it Yian has got lucky. He can still get up although a painful struggle. But brother heed this warning. If you slip or miss a step and burst your disk. You will wish death on yourself. It will be 100 X your current pain. Please be careful and go steady. Get acupuncture, DO NOT get cortisol injections. My grandad had those. They work for few weeks then fade and pain returns. Don’t do physio straight away. That’s a risk. Your not too bad but your at that dangerous stage of swelling that it could burst. But then just get surgery. Anyway that’s my experience and through that experience. That’s my knowledge and advice. Hope you get well soon.

Had more or less the same thing, even down to lying on the back seat of the car. My disc had trapped my Sciatic nerve, so I was unable to put my foot to the floor. NHS not interested, so like you I went private. Cost me lots of money, and in the end my job. As you say, look after your body, you'll only ever have one. Take it easy.

    Hi Yan.
Based on where you said the pain was in your lower back (L1 to L5) they could of put you into the MRI scanner feet first, especially as you were an anxious patient. Having your head outside of the scanner would of made a difference. Plus, they could of played music into the ear protectors to dampen down the noise from the scanner.
I recommend yoga for all the obvious reasons. Have a good weekend.
BTW: PSA tests for prostate problems is something ignored by a lot of men, even if they don't have symptons, it's something to get ticked off the staying healthy list.

I had, have similar problems last year.. L1 /4/5
I recognise those cushions between your legs, only way to be able to sleep...
I think the overall problem was for about 3 months, little energy and not able to walk far. Think i was fairly mobile after the first week, when things started to settle down.. but no way 💯. Tablets help only a tiny bit. Look at inversion therapy. That's laying on a table attached to an A frame. You end up being hung from your legs. It's the best treatment for regenerating the spine. Stretching it apart. Reversing the force of gravity. Allowing the discs repair also... BUT.. need to start very gently. No hanging totally upside down like a bat ).. feel for you, but you'll get there with proper care. MRI not pleasant. They had to do mine twice, because i couldn't keep still enough with the pain... life's great.. Also adrenaline rush in the spine is a killer for me. So careful when drag racing... Keep smiling 😁

Yanni, I just saw this mate. As soon as you started describing your symptoms my heart just dropped. I did my L4/L5 in on the right hand side in 2018 going swimming. I believe they said something like a disc bulge/rupture on the l4/l5 along the nerve root. Something like that. Hard to hear as a mid 30s guy running a small business that required me on my feet. I wish I could say it wasn't a long road for me (mine went on for months and months), but you can and will get through with the right physio. I will also say, It is so complex, so everyone's situation is unique. There is so much wrong stuff out there for people with lower damage, so just listen to your body and take it slowly. If something is making it act up, listen to that and let it rest. It is probably the hardest thing EVER (I hate sitting still). I was so lucky to find a group in Canada (not covered alas, but 1000% worth it) that focused their work with high high level athletes to recover from these kinds of injuries so they can return to what they love. I really do credit them, alongside my family with getting me on the right track to being active and productive. The regular "medical system" just said there isn't much we can do, and sent me on my way (again, personal experience, I'm sure not everyone is the same). Lean on your team to help you out! You have so many good people at work and a supportive family! AND, there are those of us out there that have gone through it, I'm sure many of them are doing what I am, and letting you know we are out there, but if you ever get discouraged, reach out!!

Fella, I have had 3 back ops around L3-L5. I was in the same position for the third op and was on crutches. Was and still on some of those drugs but the best pain relief is a bag of frozen peas. once the cold gets in deep, it all contracts and the relief is magical. I know exactly how you are feeling mentally and i was told 12-14 weeks recovery but each time was 8 weeks. chin up fella. it gets easier…

For the past 6 years, I've had at least 2 MRI per year. The machine is no joke, especially if you are the slightest bit claustrophobic. I have to take pills beforehand. Watching this video makes me grateful to have good health care and not have to jump through the hoops like Yanni did. FFS that was brutal.

the worst thing you can do is stay still, ie you need to keep gently moving so that your affected area doesn't get worse. you also need physio and chiropractor ( sometimes both of which can be done at home) and given the fact you are actually able to get up and walk even if its a fairly short distance, and your able to get in and out of a vehicle, your not in that bad of a shape as you think you are. the pain simply is making you think your far worse. so yes you can get to these appointments.... it just depends how badly you want to get treated. also you could hire a mpv private taxi to take you
