We're checking out the original luxury limousine with the W126 1988 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL. Finished with black metallic paint on black leather, this 560SEL was equipped with Mercedes-Benz' M117.968 5.5L V8 pushing nearly 300hp. Many safety and luxury features can be found on this 30 year old car, such as digital temperature gauge, rear self-levelling suspension, rear power sunshade, rear power & heated seats, and so much more.
We're going on a full tour of this W126 S-Class Merc to show you all the features this OEM+ car has to offer.
We're proud to say that all of our videos are uniquely produced in the Niagara Region, Ontario, Canada.
The little dashes on the speedo are actually for top speed in each gear used to prevent the engine from over revving when downshifting
That makes sense! I remember reading about it about a year ago when I was looking at buying a Merc. Thanks!
Wow 300,000 plus miles. That's incredible.
Still going strong too! We filmed it last weekend, it's at 326,000 now.
I grew up with these beautiful saloons The build quality is second to none. Great Video!
I wish I had experienced these cars when I was younger, but we're definitely hoping to feature more like this!
Maybe i am weird but... You didn't shut the doors in the video. For me you can tell the quality of the car by the sound the doors make when they are shut. Solid thud means business and i always pay attention for that.
You're absolutely right, I can't believe I didn't film the doors! The owner even made a mention of it when I was setting up the rear seats for shooting, but I didn't think to actually shoot it. They do make a unique quality sound when they're closed. There's something satisfying about the way an old Mercedes sounds.
Vladimir good remark
Bought a 1990 500sel and of 2018. They are stunning cars so well engineered and screwed together. Before the bean counters at Mercedes called the shots.
These are some incredible cars, no doubt! Hold on to it if you can!
I miss the one I owned before the 2008 housing crisis. Now own a lovely 1991 420 Sel.
Can't go wrong with that! I don't often spot these on the road, but they always command my attention. In fact I saw one in Niagara Falls, ON this weekend, however the owner put some awful LED headlights on theirs.
You're fast becoming one of my favourite car RUclips reviewers. Keep up the good work!
Thank you, I really appreciate that! We're hoping to get something new shot soon, with the weather getting colder here a lot of people are parking their summer rides, but I have a long (infinite) list of cars I want to feature.
The little lines at those speedometer numbers are actually telling you the upper limit for the gear you're in, 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th. So, you're good up to 50kph in 1st gear, etc.
Yes we understand that, we covered it recently with the E320 video we've done. We've also re-shot this car completely with a new video last week.
nice test drive without any driving involved
We distinguish the different types of videos we do. As a 'Full Tour' like this one, there's no driving involved. The owner of this car only had a couple hours to spare and we had a second shoot that day. We plan on revisiting this car in a few months with a 'Full Tour & Review' which will include a driving segment.
I've been binge watching these old school Mercedes car reviews. All I want to know is what happened to Mercedes they were ahead of its time in technology and innovation but it seems like mid 2000s is when things started to go downhill.
Cost cutting. That was the big problem Mercedes was tackling around the mid-90s into the 2000s, they wanted to start cutting down on the cost of vehicle production while utilizing their newly acquired Chrysler division. Unfortunately a lot of cheaper parts ended up going into vehicles like the W220 S-Class, and they skimped on the paint in order to save money.
What a beauty! I'd love to have one and what's more - have one in that condition!
It looks even better now! We filmed this car again this past weekend with a 1991 300SE. We're still working on the video but are looking to publish it on August 7th!
PRN So cool. I'll stay tuned for it!
That car is gorgeous.
We're hoping to film it again during the Spring!
Very nice! I have an 87 turbo OM603 and a 95 non turbo 606 engine. This would blow the doors off of borh of mine. I love my W124s.
We really enjoyed the W124s that we drove also, there's certainly a lot of greatness with these older Mercedes models.
This era Mercedes instrument cluster is beautiful. Compact and clean design even if it has a lot of information! The best variation of this cluster is the one with "reiserechner" trip computer which is fitted in tacho/clock spot. But you still don't have to give any other cluster info up.
Ps. It would be nice to see any mb revieved with their first trip computer!
We'll try our best to find one!
This world in high-end cars was better than today. They cared more about beauty, build quality and reliability. The 1980's S-class optional and premium features were also useful like telescopic steering wheel, heated seats, extra airbags and rear power seats. Today so many cars' gadgets are gimmicky and unnecessary like electronic buttons in place of door handles, "hands free" driving and run-flat tires.
Great points!
Very luxurious, fabulous video and review, great car 👌👏👏🎵🎵🎵👍
Thanks! We've re-filmed this car since this video went live, we feel our second take at it was much better: ruclips.net/video/xsZG-st-wVE/видео.html
Also from personal experience, if you on a side of the road with your engine running, and for some reason you're leaving the car, as long as the door is open the car it will automatically switch on the hazard lights.
I ve oned one if those beasts for 3 years almost.
Is an unbelievable comfy and is gave in you a certain safety feeling I never experienced in the newer models w 220 or w 221.
But again just my personal experience and taste.
Great work mate.
I'm going to have to give this a try! We're hoping to take this W126 back out to do a followup video within the next couple weeks.
i used to drive a 1987 420sel. loved it. now i'm in a 2001 e320. the next one i want to get is a e55 amg
The E55 is definitely the way to go, sounds like you've had some awesome cars!
Crazy how far ahead of the curve they were back in the day....now MB is just another option.
sad and true
It's funny how true it is. A friend bought a 2003 E500 and it has a lot of the same features my 2001 E38 had, and a few things that made my car look basic. I much prefer the older Mercedes', we're hoping to do more videos about them here!
i realy apreciate :D i drive in this moment w210 from 1997....and i have a E38 from 96 :D 728i ......but firt the E38 need a little repair...for the TUV in germany :D
I was very close to buying a W210 wagon instead of the E38, someone imported an E250TD wagon with a 5speed, but they wanted $13,000CAD. I also had my eye on a W211 wagon but it was sold before I was ready to buy.
i buy my w210 in 2010 with 4.000 € from Italy .....and the E38 i find here in germany with 1000 € ....but need's new suspension....new fuel tank....ball joins....gearbox filter and oil ....i wil do a video when it's finished....i think next ear :D .....and i hope ...i hope.....w140...:D
i've watched nearly all your videos in the last few days, i would love to see you make a video on the w123 chassis :D
That's awesome, thanks for watching! Our recent stuff (we feel) is exponentially better than even things we did back in February. We're definitely looking at finding a W123 to review, but those seem to be pretty rare in our area. We'd love to get a turbodiesel.
PRN no doubt, it took me months to find a 300d turbo in good condition, but once i did, i had to buy it. it has been a great daily driver in the months that ive had it.
I bet! We're going to keep our eyes out on finding one.
1:05 that's cool you can reach your mirror adjuster, but not the other one so you only need the right power mirror.
Waaw over 200km/h in 3rd gear. Those I II and III are top speeds for the gears, that also means the gearbox is a 4speed, and IVth is not listed because you cannot downshift from a higher gear to IVth, so no danger to overrev the engine. They are so cool, I want 'em back. The car can actually go a little faster in each gear than listed
I thought it was interesting that the driver's mirror was manual operation, yet the 1988 300 E we filmed a couple weeks ago had both power mirrors. I wonder if it was just something leftover from the first year of the W126 and it didn't make sense for Mercedes to add all the wiring to bring it up to spec when compared with the E-Class.
There's a pressure for power everything and they deliver but i preferr the simplicity & reliability of the manual one. Also any 126 car is to be reffered as:
The Only Shape That Exists.
Great job great views and information
Thanks! We feel that this video could have been way better, which is why we re-shot the car last week.
I would've liked a driving impression. I have always wondered how they get down the road.
We're hoping to film this car again on 1 July! The owner has done some excellent cosmetic upgrades to make this look more like it's European counterparts.
Audi got also that feature with the parking 💡.
But if I m not wrong you re using the turning left / right mannete (if I can call it like that.
On the BMWs the turn signal indicator is used for the parking lamps, if that's what you're getting at. Little different way to make it happen. I like how Mercedes has it as part of their headlight switch.
Love this car. But I'm not sure if I should get this one or the W140 as my first
The W140 would probably be a better daily driver just because it has some modern features that would make daily life a little better, plus the W140s aren’t quite at that point yet where people want them to collect, whereas the W126s seem to be going up in value.
As a W140 owner I don't recommend you to get one as your first car. Once you have a W140, you won't find any other car to replace it!
i would love to daily a W126. Anyone know of models reliable enough for a dd?
There's a great W126 community out there with many people using these as daily drivers. I think if they've been maintained properly and the service is kept up any of the models will be decent. We'll be publishing a new W126 video on 7 August for this 560SEL along with a 300SE.
PRN Your the best man! Can't wait for the video
I would put the original rims and grill back on this !
Hey, your from Ontario !
We were, yes!
I want to find a cheap high mileage one with a tattered interior (so i dont feel guilty about customizing classic upholstery) and rebuild from the ground up, but seeing all the interior features intimidates my wallet a little. What under the hood looks pretty simple compared to my 94 E320.
Interesting! We always through the 560 engine looked insanely complicated, but if you know what you're doing it shouldn't be that bad. On this W126 only 2 interior electrical elements weren't working when we filmed it the second time a couple months ago, the rear window shade and the horn. The horn is due to the W124 steering wheel, so it's a non-issue, but the shade could be a big job. For the most part the interior shouldn't be that much of a headache as long as it works more or less. Hopefully you can find one!
This car is very big for me, I think I am going to go for Mercedes w124, if possible can you please review a Mercedes w124. Much appreciated.
Glad you asked! We have a 1988 300E (W124) ready to publish, it will be live on our Channel on 26 June 2017 at 7AM Eastern Time. We also hope to feature a couple other W124s over the next couple months!
Is it my imagination or are the front turn signal lenses on the US/Canadian spec cars a lighter shade of amber than the European cars? I'm thinking this may be the case for several different mercedes models from this era?
It's certainly possible, but it could also be our camera. We filmed this on a Canon 6D the same week we bought it, so we hadn't had a lot of time to play around with the settings.
That's right, they're lighter.
American regulations - Ruining European cars since the 70s.
Great video!
Thanks! We're using some new gear for this one, I was a little worried about quality this time around. Gotta relearn everything!
No problem! I own a 1976 240D manual in great shape thought maybe you would be interested in reviewing it? I'm located in Ottawa.
I actually make my way into Ottawa about twice a year or so, next time I'm heading out that way we'll get in touch and see if we can make something happen!
PRN Sounds like a plan! Thanks. I have some videos of it on my channel if you'd like to get an idea
Will do!
do a review for bmw e32 IL if possible ;)
We would love to! We just haven't found anyone with an E32 in good enough condition to feature. The handful we've come across are badly rusted and poorly maintained unfortunately.
how would that car look with white wall tires?
Probably not very good, but everyone has their own opinion as to what they like!
How much do these go for ?
Depends entirely on condition. Currently there aren't many W126s for sale on AutoTrader in Canada. Currently there's:
1989 420SEL with 590,000km: $11,000
1990 420SEL with 122,000km: $11,500
1984 500SEL with 240,000km: $10,000
1990 300SEL with 199,000km: $8,900
Prices are truly all over the place when you look at those numbers. The 560s are the ones everyone truly wants though, so expect a mint condition low milage example to sell north of those.
Porsche also has parking lights
I believe all the German manufacturers have them, I'm still surprised how many people aren't sure what they do.
This car is actually huge, feels huge, and is pretty slow to respond. Feels like driving a tank. Seats not too comfy, a bit too soft. Looks nice but I wouldn't actually recommend it.
Fair enough!
I can only assume it doesn't run
This car ran well, both times we drove it as we featured it again about a year after this.

Yes!
The long bumpers in the American version ruined its looks to some extent otherwise a great looking car with timeless design.
Definitely won't find many fans of the US bumpers, however I think they're incredibly expensive for any Mercedes model to ship over from Europe. This car did receive Euro-spec headlight which helped improve the look of it.
+PRN those arent euro lights , just gen 2 US ones
I can assure you they are euro-spec, the owner bought them from a European supplier and installed them a few days before we filmed the video.
euro spec lights are all one-piece glass , these are clearly 2 pieces with a plastic fog light lens
that's really strange given the source though
Ah you know what! You're right, in the video those are the original US headlights, it was the front grille he changed out for the video. Since filming he has replaced the headlights with the one piece glass. We're planning on filming a followup video with this car sometime this month, it looks great with the updated headlights!
lol hankook tyres on these cars...for real man?
It still has those tires on them. We just re-filmed this car with a scheduled publish date for August 7th.
O..... It's definitely not good asRR
We've re-shot this car and will be publishing a proper episode of TestDrive Spotlight for 7 August!
My English sucks...🤕
No worries!
The 1977-1979 Lincoln Continental is still better than this 1988 Mercedes Benz 560SEL because of the size(same as the modern Mercedes Benz S-Class), comfort, V8 engine, ride, and looks!!!Despite technology and safety not saying I hate the 1988 Mercedes Benz 560SEL and my grandpa had this car but still the 1977-1979 Lincoln Continental was still more advanced for its time even the 1980's rather then the 1988 Mercedes Benz 560SEL!!!
Now that's a car we'd like to feature! Finding one is pretty tough though, at least in decent shape with an owner willing to let us film it. My first car was a 1983 Ford LTD Crown Victoria, very similar in size and 'power', but nowhere near as advanced.
I love those old Continentals from the 70s (they're HUGE, way bigger than the Benz), but believe me, the S Class is a way better car, specially when it comes to driving at high speeds.
At low speeds the Lincoln must ride really comfy.
Nothing worse than milky wood
Not really eh.
so annoyed because your every fifth word is "your"
Good thing this was our last 'live' walkthrough of a car. Subsequent vehicle tours have been recorded and scripted after filming which we feel has improved the overall video.
Replica AMG wheels. Lame
I can assure you those are authentic Monoblock rims.
