  • Official U.S. policy towards Taiwan focuses on developing robust non-state relations with the island while advocating for a peaceful resolution to the cross-strait conflict. When considering American policy towards Taiwan, is more U.S. support good for Taiwan and regional peace?
Sara Newland, Assistant Professor of Government at Smith College, discusses the need to pay attention to Taiwan’s own desires and needs in the context of the China-U.S.-Taiwan relationship in this latest installment of U.S.-China Counterpoints in an interview conducted on November 3, 2023.
U.S.-China Counterpoints explores common perspectives on the U.S.-China relationship held by those in both countries. Guided by leading experts, this series examines the facts behind common viewpoints, and the details that shape U.S.-China relations behind the headlines.

It boggles the mind that people borrow a couple hundred thousand dollars to go to college and work off their loans by lying for think tanks. What kind of empty life is this?

For we know, the young professor could be a DPP paid troll. DPP doles out a lot of money for this kind of crap.
Sounds to me she only talks to DPP people, not the other majority in Taiwan. This explains her DPP talking points. Maybe that is all she is allowed to say

So many mistakes here, i wonder if it is intentional misinformation or information manipulation for political purpose. Maybe the professor is poorly educated.
"Essential a province"... No, under one country two system, Macau and Hong Kong has its own currency, passport, flag and olympic teams. More than what the Commonwealth of Virginia has as a state. Taiwan might have more.
"Status of Taiwan is ..." Please check Japanese unconditional surrender. After all, it was the Americans that nuked Japanese to their knees.

The one country two systems was put aside for the One China policy. Stop spreading misinformation for the CCP.

This is too much.. “Rising in China aggression around Taiwan”. Whose navy is sailing off the coast of another country? It is not the Chinese navy sailing around Guam or Hawaii, much less off the West Coast. This Q/A exemplifies and propaganizes American Exceptionalism par excellence. The US can have a navy with seven fleets that cover all oceans and intimidate its adversaries with aircraft carriers and marine laden landing ships. But the moment the Chinese built a navy the protect it’s coast and trade routes, that is China aggression.

To be fair, NCUSCR is not too bad when it comes to internal propaganda compared to other think tanks, like the Wilson Center, Atlantic Council, and a dozen other think tanks.
The problem is Americans only talk to and listen to a select few. They should at least talk to everyone
