Simply wonderful, indeed. This must be the most beautiful violin sonata, along with the Faure no. 1 (also in A major) and Brahms' own no. 1, ever written. It is no accident that is so melodious and songful, since paraphrases of several Brahms lieder run throughout. Kogan plays gloriously, with ravishing intonation, but rarely lingering to sentimentalize. The Oistrakh-Richter recording is also incomparable, as one might expect from this duo. IT seems that Russians play Brahms perfectly.
