Chuggington is a cartoon that I haven’t seen many RUclipsrs discuss regarding nostalgic shows from childhood. Not to mention its ballsy reputation among the Thomas fandom for being an alleged “bootleg rip-off”. After I watched all SIX SEASONS I wonder, is the show truly an underrated children’s classic, or is it just another typical kid's show? Let’s find out and get wacky!

Ironically I would say that the current Thomas is closer to being a rip-off of Chuggington than Chuggington being a rip-off of the original Thomas show. They even have a speedy character that begins with K (although Kana is more similar to an oc that someone in the fandom made right down to their names being identical excluding one letter and very close in livery).

It's so nice to see someone finally talk about this show. In fact, recently I had been binge watching the entire series when I came across this video. I remember watching a bit of Chuggington when I was younger and while thinking it was okay and maybe a bit superior to the other shows that were airing on Disney Junior because it was about talking trains, I didn't think it was better than Thomas and never grew that attached to it. Though I did respect it and I always got pretty irritated whenever I saw some goose say that it's a rip off of Thomas. It wasn't until around late 2018; early 2019 in which I actually started getting into the series because of the announcement that it was coming back for a sixth season. Ever since, I've found myself really enjoying this series. Not to the extent of Thomas, of course or Tugs, but I am still really fond of it.
My favorite is surprisingly one of the mains, Wilson. But besides him the rest down my list are mostly the side characters like Pete, Speedy, Harrison, Chatsworth. I guess maybe a reason why Wilson became my favorite is because I saw not just a bit of me in him but also a bit of Thomas who is my favorite character in his respective series as well.
I personally think that Season 5 was the best season of the series because while some episodes still used the new format that was developed in the previous season, I think the best thing that 5 did was have every episode centered around a different character. But one of the greatest things that came from that season was having not one but two episodes in which Wilson, Brewster and Koko don't speak in. Those two things are just a few reasons to why the episode Tour Guide Harrison became my favorite episode of Chuggington. Not only does it star one of my favorite characters, but it does a great job with giving screen time to both old and new characters while having the mains not even be mentioned throughout the episode.
I do agree with most of your points that you make in the review such as Season 4 being the worst season (although I don't hate it or anything) and pretty much almost every else if I'm honest, though I do respectfully disagree with what you said about the animation. I do think that animation in Chuggington is good and it certainly improved as the show went on, but I can't deny that it sucked in Season 1. The designs and set piecing of the characters and setting were fine but 1's animation is pretty outdated based the horrible lighting which at times can look like something out of a video game; the weird human body language and the fact that mostly everything that had curves to them had edges. I feel that latter aspect is modt notable on stuff like the tracks and a few of the characters mouths like Frostini. I think the animation was at its best Season 4 and 5 in my opinion because really the only thing that 6 improved upon with its animation was making the overall quaily cleaner and sharper. But it's clear to me that with the big production that season had, not everything with its animation was perfect and I think that would also apply for its first season. There are times in Season 6 in which the lighting is either too bright or too dark on certain character, there's a definite lack of trees, more so than it was in previous seasons, and well, I probably shouldn't continue rambling. You'd be able to notice some of the errors if you looked at the goofs section to the episodes on the wiki. Speaking of that I'm actually an admin on the Chuggington wiki. Not too much of a big deal but I do take my pride with what I do on there even if I'm all that active compared to Rudhly.
I do apologize for rambling on for way too long about my thoughts on both Chuggington and this video; I'm not even sure if you read this but I wouldn't blame you if you didn't. But overall, I'm just happy to see someone finally talk about this series and to give it the justice it deserves.

I think the peak of this rivalry was some weirdo on the internet writing an article saying that the character design in Chuggington was better than T&F.
It could basically be summed up as "How did Thomas and Friends get so popular when it's so creepy?".
I know it was trying to make me angry but I felt reassured because I like creepy things and I like Thomas.

  • @bow-tiedengineer4453
    @bow-tiedengineer4453 Год назад +26

Personally, I quite like both shows, but I think they are trying to do very different things. Classic Thomas is trying to be grounded, chill, and slice of life, while Chuggington is trying to be colorful, energetic, up to date, and educational for kids. I don't think Chuggington could ever become as popular as Thomas, because they didn't have one of the biggest things that made Thomas so great. Thomas, starting from the railway series, did it's best to respect it's audience's intelligence, with the Rev. W. Audry always doing his best to keep everything grounded, and he made the effort to keep everything internally consistent, never just assuming that kids won't notice things. I think that, and all the additional lore you can dig into and the many layers of the IP, really help make Thomas something that you can continue to find more in as you get older, with as much there for an adult fan as there was there to interest a kid. And the scores, nobody else put that much effort into kids show music! But I also think Chuggington succeeded in it's goal of being a more modern and inclusive show in the same genre as Thomas, and they do share the most important feature of early Thomas: Passion from the design team. It's clear the people who made Chuggington really wanted to make a great show, even if they were targeting a specifically young audience instead of an "all ages" audience like classic Thomas did, and I think they did, generally, succeed.

I think one of the main reasons that Chuggington is seen as a rip off of Thomas is because of it's popularity.
If you ask me to name a show with talking trains that isn't Thomas my first answer would be Chuggington. And so if people think of a rip off of Thomas they think of Chuggington because it's the 2nd largest franchise about talking trains. And other shows like underground Erie are a lot less known. (I didn't even know about Underground Erie until a few years ago)
Another reason that I think people dislike Chuggington is purely the (visual) style, everything looks shiny and colourful, the rails look like plastic.
Everything looks like a big toy set, so people see it as a show to sell toys and nothing more.
I've only ever watched bit of Chuggington in passing when in it's peak so who knows maybe I'll give it more of an in depth watch.

Excellent Job, Thanks for fleshing Chuggington out for us,
Admittedly as I didn’t care for some of the “friends,” Disney cuddled up with in the 2000’s (especially their trying to hold onto people like me with lazy tv shows that were meant to make pop singers while telling us to go to the middle east to do imperialism).
I didn’t really pay attention to Chuggington, nor be mean to people for liking it.
(as, you guys were children, you didn’t need more bullying tbh), so I mostly left you guys to play with your chuggington trains & lightning mcqueen (to me that pairing made more sense than lightning & thomas).
So I mostly forgot about it.
Despite being a Thomas fan I accepted the Chuggington show as a separate universe, I grew up with Thomas and Theodore Tugboat, so I am familiar with the “knock off” nonsense, but I accepted them as separate worlds and respected them for their own efforts.
So I greatly appreciate this video.
P.S. I sadly don’t think that the ruining of Thomas was avoidable, I think the TV show should have ended, and the series maybe could keep making merchandise but allow the fans to keep it going…

As one who raised his sons on T&F, his grandkids on Chuggington, and likes them both, I totally agree with all of your points.
One merch you forgot to mention is that Bachmann Industries made/makes HO/OO scale models of both T&F and Chuggington for use on HO/OO scale model railroads. You could tell that T&F was the better seller because the product line is much broader and still being sold today; only a few Chuggington characters were produced. The T&F engines have moving eyes driven off of the main motor; which the Chuggington engines have working headlights. The HO Scale Chaggington characters feel slightly "bland" because they are *not* bouncing around like they do on the show, and have no animated parts.
There is another show you should check out that comes from Korea. It is called Titipo Titipo. It is a spinoff from another show based on a bus. In my opinion, it is kind of in the middle between T&F and Chuggington; the characters are not as high energy, bouncing around in a futuristic environment; but it is also not as grounded in reality or as well developed as T&F. I also think the CGI in it is good as well; again, probably in between T&F and Chuggington. The setting is contemporary, the track looks normal, the night scenes with the various lighting are particularly good. It too has a similar overall arc with its main characters, and a kindly old station master playing the role of Sir Topham Hatt.

I always thought of T&F and Chuggington as two different shows. T&F was trying be realistic which they obviously failed at during the later T&F CGI seasons and the new series as they treat Thomas as everything but a train, they just cared about trying to beat Chuggington to a pulp and they wanted to be meant for all ages.
Chuggington on the other hand: their goal was to be realistic which they met that goal because almost everything about the show was realistic except for the fact that the engines could go by themselves but you know what…whatever. They also wanted to be colorful, tried to beat Thomas and Friends in the merchandise line and as for the learning aspect; while T&F gave simple solutions to problems…Chuggington took it a step further by showing how to make the problem more manageable.
Plus on top of that Chuggington was all CGI from the beginning, Thomas and Friends was model railway from the beginning and then worked up to CGI later, the engine names for Chuggington were more modern names like Zack, Wilson, and Harrison…compared to T&F names such as George, Timothy and Percy. And finally: Chuggington was Disney for US and Thomas was PBS Kids for US!

Out of 10 i would give your video a solid 8 or even 9 and it is defiantly worth a sub,
I would recommend you cut your chapter transitions from around 10 seconds to about 6 or 7 seconds each, it may make it feel rushed but even for my diagnosed slow processing it was a little excessive to have it at 10 seconds but 5 seconds is not quite enough for the longer chapter titles

let’s be candid here even prior to Thomas the Tank Engine (1984) there have been countless anthropomorphic train designated characters in TV and feature film and no one objects Thomas, he’s just a pop culture Icon with a valid legacy
In short Quality is more fundamental than Originality
Nothing’s original albeit Art is what generates subsequent concepts

  • @tre-engines
    @tre-engines Год назад +7

It’s like you read my mind and made it into a video! Thomas & Friends will always be my favorite show even if sometimes it lowers in quality, but I can’t say Chuggington is bad! The reason why a lot of Thomas fans despise Chuggington is because it was a threat to Thomas & Friends and really the first direct competitor to the show. Chuggington isn’t the greatest kids show but it has some good music, cool character designs, decent episodes, and great quality merchandise in my opinion and I think these are the reasons why it did so well. Chuggington is similar to Thomas in terms of concept and merchandise, but like Tugs it was trying to do its own thing. I understand why many Thomas fans still don’t like Chuggington, and the show itself is just decent in my opinion, but just because it shared the same concept as Thomas make it a rip-off. A comparison I make that I think is important to think about, is The little engine that could book. According to Google it originally came out in 1930, 15 years before the railway series was published, and also had a very similar concept to what the Reverend. W. Awdry was going for, but that doesn’t mean the railway series was a rip-off of that book. Even the Jack and the Pack Thomas spin-off that was extremely similar to Bob the builder didn’t take every aspect from that show. I’m very thankful you made this video as it perfectly described the differences between Thomas and Chuggington and I appreciate that you uploaded it!

I love the trains being able to jump cause I think of something like this and this type of scenario is so funny to me for some reason:
" You're standing at the train station, you're waiting for a train to take you to your soul draining office job, a train pulls up and your stomach sinks with dread. You recognise the train. It's a new one.
Your friend has constantly warned you 'NEVER go on the younger trains, those things drive absolutely crazy sometimes.'
But you don't have a choice, you don't have the time to wait for a different train, you reluctantly board it with the other passengers, you sit down and grip the seat in anxiety, the train begins to move.
Everything was calm, fine, for awhile, you relax, figuring either your friend was exaggerating or you just got lucky.
Everything and everyone goes flying up into the air, you crash back down almost falling off your seat, your heart is pounding.
Everything goes up and back down again and again and again until everything goes up again but this time for an extended period before crashing back down, like the airtime of a drop in a rollercoaster.
You go crashing to the floor, most others do as well, there's screaming, loud talking, and angry shouting.
You want to begin yelling too. You're pissed.
The ride from that point on went smoothly and normally, as if the abhorrent surprise airtime never happened.
The train eventually pulls up to the station, the doors are crowded, you have to wait a bit to get out but when you do you could see and hear a staff member shouting, fiercely reprimanding the train, who looks incredibly guilty.
    _Good._ "

I think Chuggington is a decent show. Sure, its not realistic as Thomas, but does it matter? No. However, some Thomas fans are harsh about Chuggington, calling it a ripoff. But look, if a show has talking trains in it and it takes place on a railway, does it make it a Thomas ripoff? No. Chuggington is inspired by Thomas, and there are some coincidental stuff in the show, such as the main characters, Brewster, Wilson and Koko, who are the main characters and mascot of the show. And their liveries are inspired from Thomas, James and Percy. The show is also focused on diesel trains, or trains in general in the modern world. (I think)
Overall Chuggington is still a good show, its not the best. But its decent. Kinda make me wish a Thomas and Chuggington crossover happened.

Gumball is a rip off of Tom and Jerry because it has a blue cat as the main character

Something to note with the animation: the bouncing is limited. Want some examples of surprisingly realistic physics?
Chuggers can't squish or stretch their chassis, and Emery can only bend because he has an accordion segment.
When Koko derails herself, she can't bounce back, and even if she had strong enough hydraulic pistons in her axle supports, she can't spin on a fixed point to re-rail herself.
When Harrison startles Owen, her pilot wheels jump the tracks, and she can't put them back up without swinging and building inertia.
About the only violations are Emery's buffers and Vee's megaphone arms. They can bend and flex easily, but that's it. That's all I saw

One of my favorites was First Responder Calley, the first episode of season five. It proves that everyone has a purpose, even if you don’t know yours yet.
Training Time Harrison shows us that adults make mistakes too, and everyone deserves a second chance.
