- This play is a prime example why there is replay in football. This is the regular ABC broadcast, followed by the same play featuring the audio of Kent Pavelka & Gary Sadlemeyer of the Nebraska Football Radio Network.

I am a Nebraska fan and have been since the 1960's. However, he was definitely down. I cannot believe the touchdown was allowed.
Hundred percent, go skers but we don't want any handouts over here.
I never forgot this play. I'm glad you posted it. This still is the worst call I've ever seen.
there was a ref right there, within feet, down on one knee, down oh his butt, down on the other knee, blazek knew he was down, but no whistle blew so he trotted to the end zone expecting to be called back. really terrible call.
Look like Tom Osborne even wanted to say "Come on you idiots you can't give us that"...
Obviously down, but love that Aikman was intercepted!
To your credit, you do say, "This is why there's replay in football."
Much love.
Great find! Remember this very well.
Tom Osborn’s expression says it all.
Finally that Nebraska is a recipient of a bad call going against an opponent to date here.
It doesn't happen hardly.
In the NFL this would have been a legal touchdown.
Had a replay back then it would have been a different outcome.
That might be the worst call ever, and there’s been tons of bad ones.
I think this was the first game where a Tom Osborne-coached team gave up more than 40 points (41). The final two were in 1990, Forty-five to Oklahoma and Georgia Teach (1991 Florida Citrus Bowl).
They also got beat by Florida State 41-17 in the 1990 Fiesta Bowl
Yeah, that time period: ‘89, ‘90, ‘91 was the worst for Osborne. People wanted him fired because he’d been head coach for 17 years, yet couldn’t win the big game. And he was starting to lose by 20 points or more to the elite teams. Also: He was in the middle of a 7-game Bowl Losing Streak. Honestly, many people wanted him gone. The only thing that stopped the mob was Bob Devaney. Also: Previously, Osborne teams would finish in the top 10. At that time, they would finish #18 or #22 or #24
@@wildmercuryfilms - there were a lot of fans still supporting Osborne. In fact there were very few in my memory that wanted Osborne gone. During that time period, the OU/NU rivalry was still huge, so if he was beating Oklahoma, that was the standard. Yes, we wanted national titles too, but as long as we were beating Oklahoma, we knew we were doing well. The period before this, from 84-87, Nebraska lost to the Sooners 5 straight years, there were rumblings starting then. But they went 4-1 against OU from 88-91 (not including the 6 wins in a row after that) so we knew that NU was doing just fine at that point. The bowl losses stung of course but it really seemed like most people felt national championships were inevitable at some point. Thanks to the defensive recruiting and McBride, it all came together.
Seeing this play again really tickles my balls!
Only thing that really went well for Nebraska in this game...remember it was a long sad ride home from my grandparents that night...
I was there. Not sure what was a worse call, this one, or when they ruled Wills down when he wasn't and scored on the play.
Maybe the refs were evening it out
Y'all think this is the worst call? I guess Penn St in '82 doesn't come to mind.
That was ‘82. In ‘82, Penn State won the National Title. In ‘83, Nebraska went undefeated until losing to Miami in the Orange Bowl. In ‘83, Nebraska beat Penn State 44-6 in the inaugural Kickoff Classic
@@wildmercuryfilms thank you. I had to correct myself and can't beLIEVE I got the wrong year.
I would say if you were looking specifically at one play in terms of a bad call, this would be worse. But if you were looking at the outcome of the game, in a game that decided in the end who would win a national title that year, the Penn State call was far worse.
First prime time nationally televised game of the year. Naw the referees wouldn’t be trying to save this game for the tv ratings. 😂. I’m UCLA fan and Nebraska had the best radio crew in college football.
Clearly a pick 6! GBR
Interesting
I was at the game - no way he was down and had possession when he was down.
I'm just a non-partial Nebraska fan. He was definitely way off the ground. NO WAY did he hit the ground with his knee and then backside before rolling back up. That was a great call by the referees. I dont know why UCLA fans are complaining so much. He was magically 1 inch off the ground according to the eagle eyes of that side ref. We mere mortals couldn't see that he was actually off the ground the whole time but the ref saw it.
Yea for the Huskers! TOUCHDOWN!
You may be more blind then the refs. His knee, ass and knee again were on the ground.
01:53 and 04:00 Blazek's left knee was down. TD shouldn't have counted.
But maybe this was the same officiating crew that robbed the Huskers at Penn State in 1982 (Mike McCloskey's out-of-bounds reception, anybody?) and felt NU deserved a break. THAT was the worst call in college football history.
made the INT, was hit and went down with a knee touching. He's down
No, hew was down, and there is ZERO question about it. (And I love the Cornhuskers).
It was a great play play until the whistle is blown
College football referees were suspect in those days. I remember NU vs Penn State '82. PSU clearly caught the ball out of the end zone costing Nebraska a Natty.
Where's D-Rock (he's "bad" remember?)???
Didn’t affect the outcome of the game
I’m a huge Husker fan but…refs….c’mon man!!!
Final:
Nebraska 28
UCLA 41
Go Bruins.
Thank You. So the bad call was a moot point. Karma wins
I'm a Nebraska fan but the game wasn't even as close as the final score indicates. UCLA dominated.
Nebraska cheats.
