Just a little correction since I've been watching too many podcasts on Byzantium: The great schism is historically not the event that broke ties between east and west and created Orthodox Christianity. In actuality it was a small event that had no long lasting consequences, but instead the ties were broken slowly with rites and procedure of practice between the two groups being slowly broken between the Papacy and Constantinople. Also at Manzikert the entire Roman army wasn't slaughtered, but that doesn't matter. Also the Emperor was captured. Last was that the Emperor who called for the crusade only expected 1/10 to 1/5 of the army that arrived, he was basically wishing for a small military force consisting of the powerful European knights.
