Gold coins : LOUIS D'OR or NAPOLEON ?

We must not confuse the Louis of gold and the Napoleon.
The Louis d'Or are the French royal coins made by the four Kings Louis (Louis XIII, Louis XIV, Louis XV, Louis XVI) between 1643 and 1789. The "Napoleon" are the 20 gold coins made in the system of the Franc Germinal between 1803 and 1914.
Some of these pieces actually bear the portrait of Napoleon I, but not all. Some of the pieces are in the effigy of Louis XVIII, Charles X, Louis Philippe, Louis Napoleon Bonaparte then Napoleon III or present images of Ceres, Marianne, the Dupré or Coq Genius.
The Louis d'Or and the Napoleon are two categories of very different pieces. The real Louis d'Or never sell for their mere weight in gold. These are highly sought-after pieces by collectors of royal coins and whose prices are very high. Before buying a Louis d'Or it is better to get more information. You can not recommend a beginner to buy a real Louis d'Or: it's better to start with a Napoleon.
The Napoleon are easier to apprehend for a first purchase of gold. Unlike the Louis d'Or, which have various sizes and weights, Napoleon's 20-franc gold coins all have the same technical characteristics. Their diameter is 21 millimeters, they weigh 6.45 grams and they are made of 900 thousandth gold (or 90% pure gold if one prefers).
Between their creation in 1803 and the cessation of their manufacture in 1914, nearly 3,000 tons of gold were transformed into Napoleon-type gold coins. Hundreds of millions of pieces have been made.
But as in the case of the Louis d'Or, not all Napoleons have the same rarity or the same value. Indeed there are rare Napoleon that have been manufactured in very small quantities. For example, the 20 gold Charles X 1828 T coin was produced with only 3151 copies. Its price is therefore higher than the ordinary Napoleon.
The most common Napoleon are the 20-franc Marianne Coq coins minted between 1899 and 1914. These coins were reprocessed in large quantities after the 2nd World War. These are investment coins, which are traded for a price close to their weight in gold. The coins 20 francs gold Genie and 20 francs gold Napoleon III are also widespread.
In summary we can say that the real Louis d'Or are coins reserved for collectors or connoisseurs. It is strongly recommended to research yourself before buying a Louis d'Or.
