    The frustrating thing is, if this was a family, who had fallen on hard times, living with 3 kids and 4 dogs in a small apartment because that's all they can afford...SOME kind of agency would 100% be called. It's only fun, cool, and eccentric when you are wealthy.

      Most libraries are connected now, I only know because I actually can’t get a library card. I used to go to the library a lot and I had Movies and books in my car while I got into a horrible car accident, I flipped my car 3 times on the highway and almost everything in my car was thrown out. The car was taken to the impound because it was totaled and I was taken to the hospital. I went to the impound to try to save what I could when I got out of the hospital but it had rained and whatever books didn’t get thrown out were soaked. I explained what happened to the library but they wanted like 100$ for each book and 55 for each movie I was broke at the time so I couldn’t have payed it if I wanted to and the result is I can’t get a library card anywhere because they are all connected.

      @@skyoutofraindrops I’m in Massachusetts, this happened on Cape Cod at the Falmouth Public Library. I called them right after the accident and told them what I lost and they wanted me to replace every book and movie at a premium price. One of the kids books my daughter took out they wanted 290$ for it I called them absolutely upset and asked them if there was some type of leniency program and they said no but I could look for the books and movies myself and give them to them or I could pay them to do it for me. It happened about 10 years ago and recently my Daughter tried to get a library card in Foxboro where we were living and they said no because she owed money too. The books that didn’t get ejected from the accident got soaked because they had to cut the roof open to get me out and I was in the hospital so I couldn’t do anything about it. Between the two of us we owe thousands to the library that we will never pay.

    If a parent wants to help a child deal with anxiety...they could talk to the kid about what is the source of the anxiety. Is the filming the problem? Is it a sensory thing? Smells, and slick soapy feel? Are there a ton of dishes? Maybe having a partner? A sibling could help, or God forbid a parent! Is the kid sick of that chore? Try chore rotations? I have played games of "gearing up" for vanquishing the evil dust bunnies, played basketball to get laundry into the washer, had cartoon fights with dishes that don't want to get washed....and danced kid through I an endless number of chores. They def have to hear their parents do the nasty and that’s traumatic enough. I’m also really intrigued as to how these kids learn how to read and write? I am absolutely shocked these people are parading their poor choices around for thousands to see.

  • @starrlea8291

    Thank you for mentioning poverty. As someone who has to co-habilitate, it can be hard. I can only imagine how much different it is as a parent who may be homeless or living in a car. Sometimes we have no other choice. To live the "van life" though; and use kiddos as a 'prop' it seems very demeaning. Children are NOT props. We should be doing our best with what we have to help our children grow.

    • @HarringtonsApocy
      @HarringtonsApocy 7 месяцев назад +4

      Children should not be “props,” but it is only in a fairly modern entirely privileged world where that’s not the norm. Children existing as labor, in ways we’d all agree are horrible, has always been a thing that the most desperate have done. As wrong as you or me may see it(cause it is wrong and horrible) people pimp their kids out however they can, especially when they come from rural or agrarian backgrounds. Children are labor, but labor in a “new” or changing world looks dfferent, a kid at a farm will work a 5am-to 5pm in a field or barn, and a kid in a city might be cigarette boy or a prostitute because that is the demand of an economic system that desperate parents try to fulfill. I grew up in extreme poverty, my mother never made any of us work in anyway, and i can thank her for that, but i can’t hold her up and go “that’s how easy it is to not exploit your kids” because we simply just didn’t have the same situations as the other kids i knew who worked, some slang dope, some did light prostitution, no matter how bad it is, it just is. And sometimes, like here, we need to recognize that the evil ppl do isn’t always a berometer of how evil they are, but instead measures how evil the situation they’re put in is. Not saying that’s what you are doing, just wanting to add a further perspective to your comment on poverty

    I had a pretty unstable upbringing myself, moving house and towns 15 times before the age of 12 - not necessarily a “nomadic” childhood but I never had a home base until then. I’m 28 now and I’m only just realising (through therapy) that this is one of the reasons I have such bad anxiety and a sense of restlessness, just like the lady in the article mentioned about always feeling as though she needed to be doing something. I am completely fucked from the constant moving around, so I can only imagine what these kids go through having to live in a glorified van. My family were essentially hardcore surfers. We had a permanent home but would spend the summer chasing the best waves and weather conditions in a camper van. I remember waking everyday before it was light out so we could drive (sometimes 1 hr+ away) to the best spot for the day and feeling like I was never really home, just in a state of transit 24/7, like being trapped at an airport. I hated it but as I grew older, staying in one place started to feel wrong as well, just like the kid described in the video. You end up left with this weird unstable anxiety, almost like constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Though many people encouraged us to try it with our son who has adhd/odd, SPD, Speech apraxia and dyspraxia, which is why the ridgid-ness of public school didnt work for him..a little structure goes a long way for him.

I rescued a cat and dog along the way and that is the most/closest I’d ever get. I’ve known multiple families who live like this… the kids get lonely(and most of the time they were in buses… not a van) It’s not good for longevity for kids, i believe anyway. There is a reason most ppl quit after 2 years- it can suck always breaking down and being stressed about legalities.

    I can't believe these family channels are still unregulated. Like it's one thing to occasionally include your family in your social media posts, but it's another to mine your children's formative years for profit. I remember hearing about one family that posted a video about their daughter's first period and GROWN ADULTS in the comments weighing in on it. It's so troubling.

    its so weird to force a lifestyle on your kids where they dont develop stable relationships outside their family. no neighbors, no school, no sports, no extracurricular activities, no organized religion, no nothing. all the people you know are your family or people you know through your family. i cant imagine subjecting your kid to that.

    I absolutely despised public schooling, I was bullied and assaulted to the point the police had to step in.
    And even then with my horrific experiences. I see the value in public schooling
    I can still see the immense value in the other experiences I had. I was taught film photography in school which has become an huge part of my life. I met three amazing administrators and teachers who became mentors to me and helped me grow and learn so much, even about myself.
    I find it really sad that these children will never have the opportunity for the positive and wonderful experiences and things that can come along with public schooling, its not always so negative and horrible. Especially when you can change shools or do a different modality of schooling that still interacts with a different people and more people their own age.
    Unschooling is just a fancy word for neglect.

      Unschooling = neglect. I agree. Even if your family does everything right public schools are great. What if you’re an artist in a sports family? Or a sporty kid in an artsy family? Your family just can’t teach you what they don’t know. And you need peers to play sports!

    I lived in an airstream that was the smallest size with my parents and older brother until I was around 8 or 9 years old and let me tell you it fuckin sucks. It’s not something fun to do!! Sure maybe for a vacation but every day of the year?? I never got to have friends over and had to sleep on the bench in the living dining space. It’s not fun it’s not cute it’s the reality of poverty for many and honestly can become child abuse quickly. Children need privacy and quiet time just like the rest of us! Not to mention there’s no way that the bus can thing is sound proof which is also traumatizing if you get what I’m saying.

Nothing about what her husband or kids wanted in the bus or van, it's all about her. I simply couldn't stomach her anymore, and I'm only one of thousands who feel the same way. That is not actually unschooling, I was homeschooled off and on throughout elementary school up until 9th grade, my mother tried unschooling briefly and according the the actual community, to unschool is to bring the children to like tons and tons of museums and educational experiences and activities and yes traveling helps that out a lot but in places like California and probably lots of states it is very easy, what they described is not unschooling, it’s neglecting education altogether.

    sorry if I got a different upbringing but...in asia I know it's a different culture....also specially I lived around near villages where farms, lakes and mountain resides...children from age to 10 already started working on chores such as simple washing dishes, cooking, chopping wood and tending to the farm etc...I used to hate it but now that I'm an adult I found it easier to live and do this chores like it's a normal thing we usually do. As I noticed people from the western society that I've lived and worked with at age 16 to 20+ (high school to uni/college) don't even know how to take care of themselves.
    I agree to the point where from this context they are taught life skills but they should also have access to proper education for opening new opportunities that they may want to do in the future.
    EDIT: Also I don't support to this lifestyle, I'm only referring to teaching kids basic life skills.

So I hope this comes across in the right way, I don't want to hate or be overly critical - I have you in high regard - but I'm not really sure what the part about the anonymous reddit post added to the video except speculation. I'm sure no anonymous comment on reddit from a maybe-van-life-child is needed to illustrate how horrible their situation is, it just came across as a bit of a reach that is not needed imo.

    I'm 40 and was "unschooled". Cannot possibly discourage this enough unless there's something like a Sudbury school involved.
    This is social isolation. These parents are selfish and want a nomadic life over giving their kids access to trained educators and a balanced education and stability.
    Of course, unschooling can be done well when you, the parent, help your child to engage their interests.
    Parents like this, in my experience, want an excuse to simply dump the responsibility of their kids education ON the children themselves. It's educational neglect and it's abuse. We NEED homeschool oversight in the US.

  • @missychan63
    @missychan63 6 месяцев назад +1

    They can't live a peaceful life offline, if they did that the parents would have to get real jobs and couldn't travel all over the country, dragging their kids behind.
    Don't get me wrong, there are quite a few families doing this very well- this family just isn't one of them. Don't make a video about how horrific social media is and how damaging it is to your psyche while you're posting your family on social media 24/7. These people are just completely clueless and have absolutely no idea the damage they're doing to those kids. Why don't Mom and Dad sleep in the bunks and let the kids take turns in the bedroom?

      @@drewthedweeeb you do better on tests when you study and practice. That's being responsible for learning the material. Choosing whether to read and follow directions, being kind or mean to classmates, working on assignments or blowing them off... Those choices all have consequences very analogous to life as an adult.

    So in certain aspects I can understand where he is coming from but it’s not genuine coming from him. To genuinely want to educate your kids and unschool, fine. But you do it for views. For the money. My neighbor does unschooling with her children. I do cyber school for mine. Even if you homeschool or “unschool”, in the state of PA, you still have to do the PA testing and turn it in. You also have to register to do at home education.They have to meet certain criteria. So essentially that can be problematic and probably why they move around so much.
    When I was a kid, every summer was spent in a camper traveling around and camping. June to August. I loved it. Difference is, it was a choice for me and it was only during summer break. We also would have friends and family who would travel around with us or meet up at some point in the summer but there was always at least 12 of us. All my cousins and friends. It was carefree.It was a choice. I didn’t have to go if I didn’t want to or if I wanted to go home sooner, no biggie

    School should be about getting kids ready for adult life not a series of memorisation tests for subjects that most folk don't even use in daily life.

    Van life 100% has its problem, in fact i’d say it existing is a problem, but a lot of these takes i’m seeing here, in the video and comments, and elsewhere just seem to be classic rightwing anti-natalist poor shaming. While there is a more complex dynamic to van life, we saw all these critiques with campervanning in the 70’s US, caravanning in 50-60’s UK, and even back to hoovervilles and legit horse drawn carriage encampments. It’s great to call out and name and showcase and discuss the effects of the social problems, but we HAVE to attribute them to the problem, not the victims. This social class of sorta middle class to rover has existed for a very long time and will likely exist for a long time more. We can shame and blame all the parents we want, it won’t change the existence of the class, the existence of the problem. But what it does change is the acceptance of shaming poor/at risk/class shifted folks for having children and putting the blame for a child’s socioeconomic position squarely on the shoulders of the parents- a classic rightwing tactic.
