It really is. The creator couldn't really stand the industry and kinda lost it and made a huge deal on twitter. Can't blame him though, hard industry. I really hope he can share his creativity with the world again though...
The funniest review I've ever seen for this game is; "When I burst the cube open the game crashed and starts me back onto the title screen, after some graphical glitches. 2/10" Ah... Metacritic.
Phil Fish is just a man with all the complexities and flaws that a man who spent 5 years working on one game by himself would have. Was he defensive and at time aggressive against internet haters? Yes, and you would've been too. In the end he delivered a great game and the people who fail to acknowledge that and instead get butthurt over his criticism of his criticizers... they're the ones who lose, not him. He will always be able to say he designed one of the greatest indie games of all time on his own and got rich off of it, and you will most likely never have that privilege.
Although Phil Fish was, and is a foolish person, I can't deny that this game is very unique, and enjoyable in that sense. And the soundtrack was amazing.
Parsa Do yourself a favor and watch a film called "Indie Game: The Movie" its on Netflix It covers the making of Fez, Super Meat Boy and Braid and it's fan-fucking-tastic. I seriously cannot recommend this movie enough. Phil Fish, the guy who made Fez, is an interesting character. In the movie he's painted pretty sympathetically and you really feel for his struggle with his development partner. But after all that he's just been digging his own grave criticizing the gaming community and stuff.
Prison Mike I've been gaming since the early 80s and have definitely noticed a steep decline in the quality and maturity of the gaming community since then. There have always been self-entitled assholes but it just seems like they are the majority these days.
msfattytroll I saw Indie Game The movie over a year ago. It's not bad. It doesn't hold a candle to the documentary "From bedrooms to billions" about the original indie game scene in the 80s. If you like Indie Game, you'll LOVE that.
Fez is a wonderful game and I wish people made more games like it. The companies trying to make a shooter so people can be happy, why cant they focus on the people who want something different, too. To many shooters and other games are blocking something great. That great thing could be Super Meat Boy or Fez. That's why I love games like this.
People in the comments just can't appreciate the hard work that went into this game - AND the beautiful artwork. Games are not about just shooting at things and everything happening at once. Watch Indie Game on Netflix and I think you'd understand more. He was going for a calming game with lots to explore. I get it's not for everyone but you don't have the right to complain about it. Could YOU make something like this? Would you have the patience to continue with something like this for 5+ years? Could you do better? Probably not.
That was the beauty of older games, they didn't hold your hand, you were supposed to explore and discover the game's secrets for yourself. This game is a huge throwback to old video games, and it's fantastic
Fez is alright. I don't like the developer but I still give him credit for being quite an artist and designer. I love old school inspired games but Fez generally isn't a genre I'm interested in. (Not that I don't like platformer "find the secrets" type games -- I love the 2D mario games) -- Fez just doesn't have the elements that keep me going back to platformers. Action, quick reflexes, etc ..
There's a huge difference between the two. The developer for Fez is an indie developer. When he works on a project, it's just him. The creator of Mario/Zelda (Miyamoto) has a whole team behind him. If Miyamoto gets backlash he still has an entire team to support him. If Fish gets backlash, he only has himself to support him.
Swoozy is only one who tried to do it "by the book". and made contracts with every game studio for whose game he did a "lets play" it was too much work so he quit. All other youtubers are basicly doing illegal thing.
ReppeNThA707 it actualy is copyright infrengment same as using movies, pictures and videos you dont own rights to. the only reason video game developers dont take any legal actions, compared to audio and video fotage is because they dont see "lets play's" as competition but as a comercial to their game. futhermore, people who do let's play's of games that didnt come out yet are not allowed to show some parts of the game (spoilers for example) because it would ruin the game for other players. In case they do that, developers will take down their video. and have full right to do so. other examples are Activision who used copyright law to take down videos that show bugs and glitches in Call of Duty game. When swoozy wanted to do it in a right way before lets plays became a thing. because it wasnt a concept yet, and there was a lot of legal issues he gave up. But other people didnt even bother with legal issues. they just recorded their game. and as it became popular video game studios didnt bother with copyright issues as it was doing them free adds.
No matter what you think of the guy, he and his collaborators made nothing short of an _amazing_ game. That's the only reason one needs to spend money on it.
Fez isn't a platformer, it's a puzzle game with platforming elements. It doesn't really reveal itself until you reach new game plus, but the game is actually very deep
More people should get into the industry of game creation. Check out Mod db for information. It is a shame when creative ideas and innovations are made by total assholes and that is why I would rather play Doom, a game that is 20 years old, than to get a game that boosts the ego of a pile of shit. Peace.
You can't compare reviews like that! A review is a grading system that tells you how well a product achieve what it's trying to achieve. It's not set based on other games. I don't get why people never get that.
What are you talking about?? They are two completely different games, and also reviews are not a competition between games it's just rating a game in it's genre.
first off, it's a good game there is no question about that, so it doesn't matter whether you like the developer or not. Because that doesn't take away that this game is well worth your time. Also I think bringing out a successful game all on your own puts a lot of stress on somebody, so atd that stress to the stress of all the hate mail Phill Fish is has bin receiving and you have a whole shit ton of stress. Not to mention that he probably wasn't all that stable to begin with.
Dax Siplin it's funny because I did. Sega Genesis and nes. However indie devs are just lazy. It's 2014 there is no reason to make these sort of games. Besides latching on to the retro " excuse. The reason we like these games decades ago is because it's all we had!
"indie devs are just lazy" nice dude, maybe you should watch the documentary on this game (along with few other indie titles) to see just how lazy these people really are. Also FEZ was pretty awesome. Unlike a lot of games on the market, it actually makes you use your brain. Getting 100% achievements is hard but it isn't rage inducing. When you solve an extremely hard puzzle (without looking it up), it's extremely rewarding. I recommend you play the game before tearing it apart on a 2 year old youtube video.
Fez is the best game EVER! I know, I know, it doesn't have 3 dimensional gameplay or 'edgy' gimmicks to attract people's attention. It really is amazingly good. I just finished it. I can say that no other game had put me in that special emotional state of mind before FEZ. The artstyle is beautiful, the music is soothing, the levels are creative, hunting for anticubes is fun, finding secrets is challenging. Sure, later on in the game you may see some glitches, but considering the perspective changing mechanic is hard to code so it works perfect, it's bound to happen. Its a shame it isn't available on all platforms.
It is unique in the fact that yes, it is a platformer, but it doesn't push you through the story or tell you the objective, it lets you explore at your own leisure. Convo over.
HAVE THIS GUY REVIEW MORE GAMES. He clearly understands video games and innovation. He doesn't just go on and on about how there is a lack of Call of Duty in the game -_-
Does anybody know the song that they played at the VGA's when Fez's nomination was announced for the indie game section? I've been looking for it EVERYWHERE!!
if you watch indie game: the movie, the creator of Fez says its supposed to be "one of those stop and smell the flowers kind of game" so yeah, we know what fez is supposed to be.
wow it finally got released? Man, seeing as how it was announced way back and later dropped out of the radar doubted it would see an actual release. Glad it did.
This game is giving me distinct vibes of Meat Boy, Crush and Cave Story. Meat Boy for its celebration of old-school style, Crush for its dimension-twisting puzzler gameplay and Cave Story for its graphical influence. Games like this, made by Indie developers, rightfully stick out amongst a sea of big-budget and (I daresay) stale FPS variants and other games that have been run through a genre checklist. Can't wait to pick up this title!
I was never actually laughing. I'd describe the sensation of enjoying your Fez video review fury (whilst laying on the floor listening to the synth soundtrack) as closer to arousal. It was an experience.
I'm so glad Phil Fish finally got this done. I want to support him and get this game. Thanks, Phil, Fez's great reception was sorely won and well deserved for all your hard, hard, HARD work!
I think that App games are geared more toward the casual gaming market. They already have the humble indie bundle which can be as low as $1 for 5+ indie games if that's what floats your boat. :P I like to give more because you can choose to give most of it to game related charities. Also, just because FEZ uses old school pixel art doesn't mean it's not a deep game, I actually encourage you to play some indie games. They'll surprise you if you give them a chance.
The reality is: -Hardly any games are created by one person (Especially more than ten years ago.) -You are twelve -Torrenting something for that reason is pretty stupid -Saying everything ever created is a "Recycled Idea" is pretty damn ignorant.

Watched Indie Game: The Movie. And I love that this game turned out great. Congratulations Phil Fish, you freaking did it! That said, I still hope for a PC release. But you can take your time Phil, we love you :D
And yet hardly anyone in IGN mentions COD in reviews. In fact, COD is usually mentioned more in the comment sections, such as in comments like this that are trying to say that IGN loves COD.
Originality doesn't sell games these days. People find a game and they stick to it, hence CoD. People constantly bitch about how terrible it is yet every year they're in line to pick it up at midnight, even if there are better games coming out with innovative ideas, but no one gives it a chance because it's an unknown series from an unknown company. We are stuck in an age of sequels and copies, my friend.
What annoys me is trying to go to an area you've been before but going through all the wrong doors. And it hurts my head. Other than that. I love the game.
I thought i made that part clear. Simply because, i'll quote myself here: "I don't expect much from this game appart from what is shown in this review. And even if it's not much, it still looks like alot of fun." It doesn't matter if i played it or not, i can see it's fun.
This is literally the best game ever. EVER. My mind exploded in the first 3 minutes.
This is what I love to see in gaming. Even if I didn't play it I love that this exists.
Video games are a technology in which we can create anything. Literally only our minds (And hardware) are limitations.
Yet we keep going for gritty, brown and green filter, games. Trying our hardest to emulate realism. My point being, if we can create anything, why are we trying to re-create what we are currently living?
Games like this leave an impact and break a mould much needed to be broken.
Its a shame that the sequel for this game was cancelled.
It really is. The creator couldn't really stand the industry and kinda lost it and made a huge deal on twitter. Can't blame him though, hard industry. I really hope he can share his creativity with the world again though...

Looks very nice! Love the overall atmosphere/art style! Hope that it becomes available for PC sometime in the future, I'd love to try it out.
well now it is (8 yrs later)
@@ErenMC_ ? FEZ has been available on PC since May 2013
And yet hardly anyone in IGN mentions COD in reviews.
That argument is silly, EVERYTHING has been done before. Innovation is taking existing things and rearranging them in in different ways.
What annoys me is trying to go to an area you've been before but going through all the wrong doors. And it hurts my head. Other than that. I love the game.
I thought i made that part clear.
Simply because, i'll quote myself here: "I don't expect much from this game appart from what is shown in this review. And even if it's not much, it still looks like alot of fun."
It doesn't matter if i played it or not, i can see it's fun.
sucks that appearently my pc can't run it... it says so at the gameslab can you run it thing
