Slik were intended as Bay City Rollers mark 2 by pop songwriters Bill Martin and Phil Coulter, (who were also writing for the Rollers) until Ure got sick of the manipulation. He joined Glen Matlock (formerly of the Sex Pistols) and formed Rich Kids ... another great band. By 1980 Ure was at the forefront of the New Romantic movement, heavily involved with Visage and later joined Ultravox ... with spectacular success. He co-wrote "Do They Know it's Christmas" (with Bob Geldoff) for Live Aid and had several hit records as a solo artist. He still tours. Midge Ure is a genius ... nuff said.
Definitely come back 70s, since 2000 decent music went out of the window, most songs now just consist of one or two lines repeated umpteen times, I could write a better song in my sleep!
Haydn James Funny you should say that, because when I first heard it in 1976, I could clearly hear the jangly piano sound characteristic of Bay City Rollers records, but when I listen to it now, I can't hear the jangly-ness anywhere near as clearly. Either my memory is playing tricks or my hearing's going!
I spent ages looking for this song by the BCR to add to my playlist, only to realise eventually it was Slik! I still remember the huge stone in the pit of my stomach when John Foxx quit Ultravox and I learned who his replacement would be. I thought that would be the end of them. All the girls at my school were in love with Slik and BCR, I was the only one who listened to Kraftwerk. However I have softened in my old age and have to admit, this is a lovely song and I've added it to my Top 40 playlist without shame. I just have another playlist for Kraftwerk!
Slik were incredible live back in the early 70's when I use to watch them in the Apollo dancing..I was only 16 then.. Talented musicians but I thought what was quite funny in the video the drummer pretending to hit his drums..He must have hated it at the time..Live he was incredible...Brings back loads of memories..Met my future wife there also..Happy times...
Towards the end of the song, the camera zooms back and shows about and girl with their arms around each other in the audience. Is that you with your future wife, Alex Wilkie?
Just played this to a friend who wasn't watching. His first comment was that the intro sounded a bit like Ultravox's "Vienna". He was floored not knowing that Midge sang lead on this. Shame the group never achieved any success here in America, but am glad Ultravox did years later. Part of the soundtrack of my life
Sung by Midge Ure who would go on to front Ultravox in the 80s and drums by Kenny Hyslop who would become a session drummer for fellow Scottish bands Skids and Simple Minds afterwards. I never knew they had a number one hit together back in 1976.
1976 No.1 Single: Slik - Forever and Ever So this song sits at No.1 the moment I turn 4. To this day I’d never heard of it and hadn’t heard of them. Because of this, I’d played it on RUclips and didn’t realise until the TOTP cameras zoomed in that ’Bloody hell, that’s Midge Ure’! #mymusicalroadto50
The very young Midge Ure !! Than maybe he didn't even know that years later he would sing Dancing with tears in my eyes, Vienna.......and many other great songs in Ultravox !!! Already had a wonderful voice here too !!!!♥
I have this single and I think it is just brilliant even though I haven't played it for many years and I am looking for a clean copy of this as my name is written on the label. Great song reminds me of the opening credits to the 1976 classic The Omen with Gregory Peck and Lee Remick and Jerry Goldsmith composed the score. Robert Bridgend Wales 🏴
I hate the pretending to sing it just looks so crazy. I went to watch Slik perform at a disco in my country when they were famous and the stage was like up at my shoulder height or so and my sister wanted me to lift her up so she could touch Midge and what happened was just so funny. I lift her and she ends up on her upper body on the stage floor and grabs at Midge's pants leg he had like a fold she could grab on to over his shoe and she pulls it making Midge fall backwards and as he does so he hit's the microphone stand with his arm so it is rocking from side to side and someone came rushing to help him but he just stood there not knowing if he should grab my sister, Midge or the mike and as she had been struggling to get closer to him she had kicked her legs to move her body and she had these clog boots on and she kicked me right in the eye. I will never forget that night ha ha ha. That was fun times.
oh, my word!!!! gorgeous midge !!!! he looks so young, it,s almost obscene of me!!.. i feel like " the child-catcher" in chitty chitty bang bang !!! so glad he,s the same age as me now, or i,d feel very uncomfortable right now , watching this, and remembering my teenage penchant for him...ooh err!! i still love this song, and still think midge is hot, hot HOT!!!!

i was a massive Bay City Rollers fan and up until about ten years ago i thought it was the rollers that sang this.
I wondered why it reminded me so much of the Bay City Rollers songs.
Excellent knowledge pal👋👋👍
Phil Coulter, a Derry man like myself 😅
And he is a SCOTSMAN from Cambuslang.
Very Rollers-like chorus, but then has that interesting funereal church sound for the intro and first verse. Great record.
That's because it was written by the guys who also wrote for the Rollers.
I was 13 when this came out 45 years on I'm still listening to Midge Ure's music!! 😊🙏💜
I was 5yr old and I only refound this classic recently. I thought the bay city rollers sang it
So very Bay City Rollers. Thought it was Les and the boys when I first heard it.
Me too, it really does give the Bay City Rollers feel
Sure does. For ages, I presumed it was the Rollers too.
He even has a bit of a Les Mckeown look about him. Scrumptious (in those days,) lol.
Same writer as Rollers originals, Phil Coulter
Sort of a heavy version of the Rollers.
Lv this song. Brilliant ❤❤❤❤❤. XLX
I love this song. I was 16 years young in 1976. I remember making mix tapes and recording from the radio. I would wait for this song to come on.
Great song, memories come back 70s.
Definitely come back 70s, since 2000 decent music went out of the window, most songs now just consist of one or two lines repeated umpteen times, I could write a better song in my sleep!
Loved this song since i was in my teens not heard it for years never knew it was midge ure ...every days a school day
If you heard this on the radio you'd swear it was the bay city rollers
Written by same songwriters ( and instruments probably played by the same session musicians )

@@dlusman The Bay City Rollers played their own instruments - no session musicians.
@@helenaville5939 even Les admits they used session musicians .www.pressreader.com/uk/the-scottish-mail-on-sunday/20191020/282372631386820

One of the greatest choruses ever!

Beautiful song and playing. One of my faves. Great lyrics. Takes me back. Bittersweet
Sung by Midge Ure who would go on to front Ultravox in the 80s and drums by Kenny Hyslop who would become a session drummer for fellow Scottish bands Skids and Simple Minds afterwards.
I never knew they had a number one hit together back in 1976.
That sweeet Midge Boy!!And His very first #1 hit.So lovelly!
I was 13 years old when I heard it on The Noel Edmond's Show on Radio One. 1976 when I was at Burrow Hill School! A Private School...
Midge Ure's vocal performance is incredible here
First song I heard sung by James (Midge) Ure, great start to a career in music.
1976
No.1 Single: Slik - Forever and Ever

Sounds like the Bay City Rollers!
Written by same songwriters ( and instruments probably played by the same session musicians )
dlusman Billy McIssac is a friend of the family (he’s on the keyboard here) and he had nowt to do with Bay City Rollers.
Happy nappy birthday Midge ;-)

Fur mich war diese Zeit scheusslich, Regina.
No the guy that is so sweet here is Jim McGinlay but the drummer he is awesome and funny today , always nice to speak to
I thought this was the bay city rollers.😂
I love ultravox

The guitar playing must have impressed Phil Lynott enough to offer him a temporary place in Thin Lizzy a few years later 😁
He was a good looking lad
sounds like a Bay City Roller's number ?
Classic song by silk could anybody tell me who wrote this song please
Bill Martin & Phil Coulter - Wrote most of the Slik stuff and Bay City Rollers ( amongst lots of others )
Seen midge ure at clouds Edinburgh then they were called salvation
Who knew? Midge Ure!
And then Vienna
❤❤❤
It’s like a theft of all bay City rollers songs. Good tune all the same 😬
Written by same people , and probably recorded by same group of session musicians
Knocked Mamma Mia off the top spot
Just a year before the rich kids... wtf?
Don't forget PVC2 who were between this (it was the same band I think) and Rich Kids!
Bubbkegum pop thank god midre ure got out of this quick
I always thought this was the Bay Shitty Rollers.
I always thought it was the Gay city rollers
Pretentious and boring.
RIP Kenny Hyslop
