What I have come to realise about my favourite guitarist of all time (Joe) is that people underestimate his incredible knowledge of theory. Because his music has the illusion of being simple which is his genius. The truth is that he weaves in some really jazzy moves into the mix and people don't even realise. He is a composer in the class of the classical giants in my opinion. He slaves over songs for months.
He's also got an awesome knowledge of exotic chords, I wish he'd do some more acoustic tracks in that field. Also sometimes I wish he'd drop that bluesy wild man persona and go back to the sophisticated spacey kind of guy that he seemed to convey when he first started out, especially during his Not of this Earth years
He talks about music theory and chord progressions more easily and better than I can talk about the back of my hand or my favorite movie. We need more of his knowledge recorded for the record books of time. I can't imagine how full symphony would sound with something he composes.
Cool to see him step out of his genre a bit and get others to explore too, I think that's what's to take away from this for the "naysayers" :P If you really want to master your instrument and use it in a unique way I think you need to explore a bit more broadly than just the theory of your preferred genre...
I always thought it's funny that jazz musicians act like they are so "unique" and "outside the box," yet, note that whenever he plays the little stacked 4ths thing, he jumps to the same old lines underneath it, and says Aledort would play it instinctively. How is that not generic? I'm not bashing the entire genre of music. It's just that I can't see how it is supposed to be so "outside the box," when people instinctively play the same thing every single time. I mean, he bashes E minor jamming as "playing like Neil Young," but couldn't you just as easily say what he's doing is "playing like Dave Brubeck?" Either way is super reductive, honestly, but I don't think jazz is some kind of magic approach that automatically makes for good, listenable music. It takes crafting and skill, just like the theory of your preferred genre does. How is it automatically some kind of superior genre? lol

It doesn't have to be a perfect 4th... the notes are 4 apart in the scale. Say you're in C major. The first chord would be C-F-B-E. C-F and B-E are perfect 4ths, but F-B is a raised 4th or tritone. The second chord would be D-G-C-F. Here all the intervals are perfect 4ths.. D-G, G-C and C-F
