I’m 55. When I was 14, I bought a ticket for the Buddy Rich concert at the old Hotel Utah Grand Ballroom. This was a general seating event and I had my mom bring me to the hotel early so that I could get a good seat. I sat about 14’ from Buddy’s drum set and can say that I saw the drum god put on a masterpiece of performances. Great memories.

It was back in the Summer of '83, and there's a reason I remember it well. I saw Buddy and his amazing band play at the amphitheater at the San Diego Zoo. His solo was unreal. Simply amazing. My jaw was on the ground. He wasn't just a great soloist, he drove his band from behind the kid better than any other drummer in history. He forced his band to play with energy and to play tightly. What he played was perfect for the songs. I've been a huge fan ever since.

I had the chance meet Dennis Chambers & he testified that Buddy Rich never used a practice pad instead he would practice on pillow which also explains where his hand & finger strength come from. Makes sense since practice pads have too much rebound much like a kevlar head on a drum corp snare that a standard plastic head doesn't possess

The low and level ride cymbal makes for less stress and fatigue in your arm. Why constantly fight gravity when playing a ride pattern? Also, Buddy did use a 7A stick. Again, less fatigue. Why fight the torque of a heavier stick? Playing with less stress means playing better time, and more speed when you need it.

The only words i have to say to this video of Buddy is OMG & WOW.
To be in the presence in any room with Buddy the entertainment value would have been OFF THE RICHTER SCALE.
i watched the video of this Impossible Drum Solo and with your video of it at 3.06 i could not believe what i was seeing. I had to look twice. What was he doing with his left hand. This is just insane.
During this concert in 1982 he had chest pain/heart attack. You can see him grimace from time to time but he just carried on and wearing his Tuxedo looking very smart. It was so humid there and i bet it was over 100 degrees.
To be at that level i bet he was hard to work with professionally and i bet being married to him was hell i expect.
I first knew of Buddy back in 1982 when he appeared as a guest on the ICONIC BBC1 'Parkinson' Chat show.
    The other guests were
Sammy Davis Jr. He was a great entertainer and musician and played the drums nearly as well as Buddy
Roy Castle - another great entertainer and musician. I remember him for playing the Trumpet as i always saw him on TV in England in the 70's when i was a kid
Kenny Everett - another great entertainer on TV in the 80's in England
Sadly Buddy had heart by-pass surgery around this time but died in April 1987 just a few months after appearing on the same ICONIC BBC1 chat show 'Parkinson' at the start of 1987 with the same guests

Buddy was #1 then and will always be #1! I can't imagine anyone ever taking that away from him. I have a suggestion for a reaction video. I would like to see you listen to an ENTIRE rock album from like 1972. It is about 38 minutes long. The band is Captain Beyond. RUclips search Captain Beyond full album. The cover is an image of some fantasy space captain. Bobby Caldwell (still alive today) is the drummer who came out of the band Johnny Winter And. Guitar and bass player came out of Iron Butterly and the singer was the original Deep Purple singer who sang Hush on the first Deep Purple album. It's a concept album where each song flows into the next. So it really is like one song for 38 minutes. When you watch it try qand count the number of time changes throughout. Rock bands rarely do this many time changes especially back then. I consider this album the best studio rock drumming ever recorded. I think you will be overwhelmed. Please let me know if you do this. DON''T CHEAT AND LISTEN TO IT BEFORE YOU RECORD THE REACTION VIDEO!!! I am looking forward to your video.

I don't know why they use this solo as an example of Buddy. Yes it's great but I have much MUCH better examples of him blowing the doors down. Check out Buddy Rich in Koln Germany around 79' or 80. That will show you what a Monster drummer he was. There are a number of great drummers out there today. Buddy was beyond great, he was SUPERNATURAL!

I have yet to see any "expert" drummer or instructor first time viewing of any BR solo comment, "that's it, not impressed at all, XXX is/was so much better". Yet commentators do. The bottom line, BR might not have been too likeable as a person due to his perfectionism, but, whether it was skill, or natural ability, no drummer that I know of has been able to post a video copy of any BR drum solo duplicate that they had performed which would in fact be the only proof of their contention.
