Greatest drummer who ever lived. Period.
Boring as hell
The day you wrote that was that maybe the day of the opposite ?
In a tux too !lol
@@mickpearson6184 I guess you don't know how to recognize greatness.
Sure is and no one else is on his level
respect this gentleman, Buddy was the greatest drummer ever.
I’m 55. When I was 14, I bought a ticket for the Buddy Rich concert at the old Hotel Utah Grand Ballroom. This was a general seating event and I had my mom bring me to the hotel early so that I could get a good seat. I sat about 14’ from Buddy’s drum set and can say that I saw the drum god put on a masterpiece of performances. Great memories.
Buddy Rich, claimed he never had a drum lesson and never practiced. Total Natural. Amazing.
Amazingly, Buddy Rich began playing drums at the age of two! And by the age of four, he was performing publicly....on Broadway, no less! He has never been equaled. Truly a legend!!
And to think Buddy was in his mid-60s when this was recorded. And...while wearing a tuxedo! Much respect to this man, he was a Legend!!
I absolutely LOVE Neil Peart and RUSH. I think he's the greatest rock / prog drummer, but Buddy Rich is just UNBELIEVABLE. Buddy Rich is the GOAT.
As far as I know, Buddy Rich was a self-taught child virtuoso... with an incredible memory. Good reaction!
Yes sir. Started playing at two and didn't read music
Yes 100% correct.
And I thought Neil Peart was fast! This guys from another planet. Glad to see good men of the Gospel are keeping the beat alive, thanks! Good things come from the Lord.
Neil peart is actually pretty basic.
It was back in the Summer of '83, and there's a reason I remember it well. I saw Buddy and his amazing band play at the amphitheater at the San Diego Zoo. His solo was unreal. Simply amazing. My jaw was on the ground. He wasn't just a great soloist, he drove his band from behind the kid better than any other drummer in history. He forced his band to play with energy and to play tightly. What he played was perfect for the songs. I've been a huge fan ever since.
GOAT 🐐
Agreed
I had the pleasure of seeing him live in the early 80's. He was so amazing. He was jazz/big band.
I had the chance meet Dennis Chambers & he testified that Buddy Rich never used a practice pad instead he would practice on pillow which also explains where his hand & finger strength come from. Makes sense since practice pads have too much rebound much like a kevlar head on a drum corp snare that a standard plastic head doesn't possess
To KBThaDrummer. This is the performance during which Buddy had the heart attack, played through it and finished the number. If you can, look this solo up with commentaries by his daughter.
Fast as lighting at the Master levels
Buddy rich was amazing. He actually had a heart attack during this drum solo, literally. Pretty sure he was also in his late 60s and he did this while wearing a tuxedo think about that too! Yeah definitely check out some of his other solos uses so many techniques that you didn’t see in this video!
If you watch about 4:10...watch his face and his breathing...that supposedly is about when it happened, and he powered through it.
you got it all wrong, my friend. Buddy was the one giving people in the audience heart attacks
If he had a heart attack it certainly improved his playing.
@@89801wink Yes - his daughter Cathy confirmed it. He WAS having a heart attack at the end. Incredible! Quadruple bypass surgery a short time later and six weeks after that was opening at Ronnie Scott's in London with his band. He was otherworldly.
@@tombaker6082 Yeah I remember it well at Ronnie's, I first discovered him when I fifteen, I'm now 74, and still play every day a Trac or two of his, I actually meet him in Ronnie Scot's place where I was given Two sets of his sticks, also carried his snare drum out to the Roady van for a concert in the morning, I will never forget him, THE VERY BEST DRUMMER EVER full stop.
The man was old school studied with George Stone ,, and was a big hit in the Vaudeville days at the age of 6 .
He was a legend drum technique was fabulous ❤rest in peace Mr rich
while he was playing this he was suffering from a heart attack and right after the performance he was rushed to the hospital. Greatest drum master ever.!
Buddy rich is the goat. He deserves that title
Simply put: the man was an artist.
Yeah this man is the original.beast on the drums
I revised Buddy’s snare drum book and BR Rudiments Around the Kit also The Ultimate Drummers Workout. I studied w Henry Adler who wrote BRs book. Buddy didn’t practice. He performed 300 gigs a year since he was 18 months old. He didn’t read music. He had a photographic memory. He was one of a kind.
The Finish of Neils iconic drum solo mimics the end of this solo when the Horns come in. It was a nod to Buddy!!
The low and level ride cymbal makes for less stress and fatigue in your arm. Why constantly fight gravity when playing a ride pattern? Also, Buddy did use a 7A stick. Again, less fatigue. Why fight the torque of a heavier stick? Playing with less stress means playing better time, and more speed when you need it.
Think he'd had a heart attack a month or so before and had just come out of the hospital when he played this show-with an undiagnosed brain tumor-through heat stroke. In a tuxedo. At age 65. Greatest of all time. Thanks for this video, KB. Fun to watch you watching.
Had an attack during that performance according to Buddy's daughter.
this is the burst of positivity i needed 🎆🥁🎼🤔😳😱😏🤘🏼✨
His solo at that Hague is even more impressive in my opinion
he tore that place up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Left handed roll is unmatched
Buddy is KING!
Pls don’t be fooled by the poster’s label of impossible drum solo as if this is his only one or “best”.
He was a beast at that level for DECADES!! Slogging it out in one night stands, movies tv shows etc
He was as they say The Goat. And he’s no kid here. Amazing to watch. Thx
From what I've read, Buddy never took lessons. He had a natural talent and was performing in his parent's Vaudeville act as "Traps, the Drum Wonder" at the age 2 or 3. Remarkable.
I have read a WWII Marine judo instructor as well. Fast hands couldn’t hurt in that line either!
Here's in his mid-sixties he also had a heart attack in the middle of this performance and he still finishes it. He was a drum child prodigy been playing since he's been 5 years old professionally.
Really? He had a heart attack in the middle of this performance? I know I'm asking a lot, but please point me to something that confirms that.
@@yowzephyr about the 410 mark his face his breathing was hard he struggled just by his face. And also his daughter Kathy has a interview about this performance and he did have the heart attack here.
@@stevenjones618 That sucks. I'm not sure I can enjoy watching this performance any more, knowing that he has a heart attack during it
@@yowzephyrit's widely known
Greatest drummer ever.
The only words i have to say to this video of Buddy is OMG & WOW.
To be in the presence in any room with Buddy the entertainment value would have been OFF THE RICHTER SCALE.
i watched the video of this Impossible Drum Solo and with your video of it at 3.06 i could not believe what i was seeing. I had to look twice. What was he doing with his left hand. This is just insane.
During this concert in 1982 he had chest pain/heart attack. You can see him grimace from time to time but he just carried on and wearing his Tuxedo looking very smart. It was so humid there and i bet it was over 100 degrees.
To be at that level i bet he was hard to work with professionally and i bet being married to him was hell i expect.
I first knew of Buddy back in 1982 when he appeared as a guest on the ICONIC BBC1 'Parkinson' Chat show.
The other guests were
Sammy Davis Jr. He was a great entertainer and musician and played the drums nearly as well as Buddy
Roy Castle - another great entertainer and musician. I remember him for playing the Trumpet as i always saw him on TV in England in the 70's when i was a kid
Kenny Everett - another great entertainer on TV in the 80's in England
Sadly Buddy had heart by-pass surgery around this time but died in April 1987 just a few months after appearing on the same ICONIC BBC1 chat show 'Parkinson' at the start of 1987 with the same guests
Even into his 60's he a was better drummer than anyone else. The word is that right after this amazing display, he had a heart attack.
"His phrasing is crazy!" He's Phrazy!
He was an old man in this video in his late 60s, and wearing a suit! Buddy Rich was probably the greatest of all time, just ahead of Gene Krupa, and Louie Belson.
Thanks friend
Bernard Rich from Brooklyn, NY.
I love your drum covers
There's a good video of him explaining why he prefers traditional grip over matched grip.
Buddy Rich was drumming as a child ,18 months old and lasted until he died at
age 69 ,April 2. 1987.
After you watch Buddy Rich play, you either want to get better or give up.
Thank you for your comments on Buddy Rich there's a lot of great metal drummers out there but they always say Buddy Rich was the best
If you like drum solos . You need to check out Dylan Elise amazing drum solo. At the torunga music festival. It's absolutely mind blowing.
And just imagine he was in his late 60s when he did that drum solo. He’s better than most youngsters
This would win any drummer combat competition..
What people don’t know is he actually had a heart attack when he was slowing down the single stroke rolls watch it again you’ll see
🐐
He was The GOAT, period!
Buddy was a black belt and a marine, who trained other marines in hand to hand combat, for WW2
No Gimmicks...no fancy pedals. Straight drums
Music memory is beautiful. I have thousands of songs memorized
Greatest composer...J.S. Bach
Greatest guitarist....Jimi Hendrix
Greatest drummer..Buddy Rich
Would love to be present at that jam session..
Much more skilled guitarists than Hendrix. When it comes to skillset, abilities, and over agility, the honor of greatest guitarist goes to Shawn Lane.
This was in 1982 at the music festival Concert of the Americas. Buddy was 40 days short of his 65th birthday. Sadly, he never saw his 70th birthday.
At around 4:25 I am assuming is the moment be actually was having a heart attack during this solo non the less lol unstoppable!
Jesus be with you, brother.
You should react to Buddy Rich vs Animal. Best drum battle ever.
🎉😂
You watched a man having a literal heart attack.
I couldn't tell at all. He played it off well
Check out "Traps The Drum Wonder" by Mel Torme - biography. Rich was a child prodigy performing in his parent's vaudeville act at the age of 18 months.
Incidentally, he had a mild heart attack DURING the solo...saw Buddy 6:times...beyond belief!
Buddy was #1 then and will always be #1! I can't imagine anyone ever taking that away from him. I have a suggestion for a reaction video. I would like to see you listen to an ENTIRE rock album from like 1972. It is about 38 minutes long. The band is Captain Beyond. RUclips search Captain Beyond full album. The cover is an image of some fantasy space captain. Bobby Caldwell (still alive today) is the drummer who came out of the band Johnny Winter And. Guitar and bass player came out of Iron Butterly and the singer was the original Deep Purple singer who sang Hush on the first Deep Purple album. It's a concept album where each song flows into the next. So it really is like one song for 38 minutes. When you watch it try qand count the number of time changes throughout. Rock bands rarely do this many time changes especially back then. I consider this album the best studio rock drumming ever recorded. I think you will be overwhelmed. Please let me know if you do this. DON''T CHEAT AND LISTEN TO IT BEFORE YOU RECORD THE REACTION VIDEO!!! I am looking forward to your video.

The best and to think he was having a minor heart attack during this performance
He claimed that he never practiced, nor did he have any lessons. He just played nonstop since he was a toddler.
Buddy is not a young man playing there, also in a suit! I admire him for his age and talent.
I'm suprized you didnt notice how he played the high hat from underneath
The Greatest jazz drummers could pull off the one handed buzzzzzzzrollllllllll:)
Don't know if you have checked out Joe morello, worth it.
he apered on the Muppet show it's pretty good
cool
They were jazz sticks 7A Capella's
Now you Know!
For that era....
It's a lot cool cats who had crazy Chops.....A LOT***
CRAY-ZEE!!!!!!
Please watch buddy rich 1970 unbelievable
Hey, be great for you to check out Jeff Sipe with Shawn Lane and Jonas Hellborg in the band HLS
where do u think John Bonham got his chops from, this man right here
Buddy never even practiced at home , no drum set at home triple bye pass, hernia, parkenses and other trouble, He is not was , the greaTEST DRUMER OF ALL TIME
He might be the fastest famous drummer of all-time
Who's the clown that gave this a thumbs down?
(hey, that rhymes!)
The main problem with thumbs down or up is nobody else knows why they gave it. Was it for the subject or something the reviewer did?
@@Glittersword No the one who gave thumbs down is a simplton.Parents are cousins🎼
@@peterchios9637 My response was general in nature not specific to this discussion.
do you do reaction requests?
🥁 so great 🥁
All that while having an actual heart attack and wearing a tux...boss!
He was the wilt chamberlain of drums.the greatest ever.
Carl P was closest rock drummer to him in stye and chops.
Buddy Rich's drum set up is pretty standard for jazz.
You can you'se Chicken wing Bones if you can play like Buddy Rich.
Not a nice guy, but the greatest drummer I've ever seen or heard!!
Started at 5
There are other drummers, then there’s Buddy…
I don't know why they use this solo as an example of Buddy. Yes it's great but I have much MUCH better examples of him blowing the doors down. Check out Buddy Rich in Koln Germany around 79' or 80. That will show you what a Monster drummer he was. There are a number of great drummers out there today. Buddy was beyond great, he was SUPERNATURAL!
he used 5A sticks and did you know that in the middle of that solo he had a heart attack?
Carl Palmer?
Yo KB please react to larnell lewis Rejoice
I have yet to see any "expert" drummer or instructor first time viewing of any BR solo comment, "that's it, not impressed at all, XXX is/was so much better". Yet commentators do. The bottom line, BR might not have been too likeable as a person due to his perfectionism, but, whether it was skill, or natural ability, no drummer that I know of has been able to post a video copy of any BR drum solo duplicate that they had performed which would in fact be the only proof of their contention.
Dude had a heart attack during this show. Kept on going. Cocaine and cigarettes
How do you know who Elvin Jones, but never listened to Buddy? lolz. Just found that interesting.
John Coltrane
All we can do now is study him.......
The Vic Forth Buddy Rich stick is big and heavy actually not 7aish at all.
