I have done many panels but one that I’m most honored to have done was for a very dear friend who worked in Florida in the Operations and Checkout/Processing Facility for the International Space Station. I have known him for DECADES and we were close. On May 29th, 2018 he was diagnosed with brain cancer. I had seen Space Shuttle panels at a quilt shop in New Smyrna Beach, Florida so I bought it and made a lap quilt for him. I sent it without letting he or his wife know. A couple of days later, I got a phone call and he said when he opened the box he pulled out the most beautiful quilt he’d ever seen. He cherished it because he knew I made it just for him and it was always close by. I went to visit him in the beginning of June for a week. He passed only two weeks later. It was one year and two weeks from diagnosis. Sorry this is so long but I guess I’m “letting it out” in a way and I’ll always remember how much it meant to me to make it for him and how much it meant to him to receive it. I have a picture of him with me, him and his wife with the quilt. Don’t know how to include it here but if you’d like to see it, I’ll get it to you somehow. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to share this memory.

This is a great video for those that have their frames too low. Before I discovered you on youtube, I watched a video from Jamie Wallen who was urging all longarm owners to rsise their frames to save their backs!! I have mine raised about the same height as yours. One day I quilted 5 straight hours and never had any back issues!!! It makes a HUGE difference!!! I have used a "home made" panel to practice my ruler work after watching your videos. I just drew squares and rectangles on a muslin quilt sandwich using a frixion pen. I didn't know panels like these existed. Thank you for all your videos - they are sooooo helpful!!!

Omg, that bobbin gadget thing! About five years ago, my husband brought one home and proudly handed to me. I graciously accepted it, looked at it like a baby alien, then tossed it in a drawer while smirking. With your thorough demonstration, I now know what to do with it. 🤦🏽‍♀️ Thank you, kindly.

N..Your comments on tension and frame height ..so good. Such important information. Once you know your machines number on the towa you are golden.....my machine runs on a 180 no matter what thread is on top. Takes time get your number ...but well worth the effort. Yes ...raise your frame...your back will thank you.

I raised mine up this past winter....what a difference! The very first thing I quilted, when I got my longarm two years ago, was a scenic panel. It helped me get used to the machine.

Your totally not the only one that has the longarm up high. I keep mine right under my brests/top abdomen. It helps from having back pain being closer to my face. And less chance of having my arm go numb and tingly. And having MS I do all I can to prevent worsening of symptoms!
On another note I love panels I use them to practice longarming curves and shapes without rulers. I love your daily stitch videos. I am not following it along (can't longarm in the summer 😔) but I am building a list of ideas for future blocks and full quilting ideas. Thanks for sharing ♥

I keep my machine slightly higher than was recommended also. Saves my back. I had to do 2 months of O.T. followed by 2 months of P.T. this past winter due to a pinched nerve in my neck. My entire left arm was numb and in pain. All from bad posture habit from job, quilting, phone, etc. Body ergonomics is so important.
I also only use my Right hand to quilt with and leave the left on the quilt. I feel more in control like I am drawing.
I keep the ruler base on all the time.
I have a tow gauge but honestly I don't really use it. I use the drop method, but it works for me.
I have done a few panels but only because they were so stinking cute I couldn't resist.

I’ve been quilting on cot panels since getting my Simply16 last year. It’s a great way to practice free-motion quilting & get used to my machine plus it feels like I’m working on a real quilt not just a practice piece. The completed panels make great gifts
I have my frame set high too, I have Fibromyalgia & sciatica by setting my frame high I’m not adding any stress to my body. I’m an Occupational Health nurse so very aware of ergonomics.
I love your books, I have ‘next steps in machine quilting’ and "Free Motion Feathers’. Thanks so much for producing the RUclips videos & books they are so helpful.

I have bought your rulers and my friend who is visiting your country next month will bring them home for me. So looking forward receiving them and your panel would just be so lovely to practice with. Many thanks Natalia for your generosity and sharing your knowledge.

I have never quilted on a panel, I would love to try. I am new to quilting...currently quilting on my sewing machine. I am still in the quilting on small quilt sandwiches for practice stage. I keep watching videos by you as well as others who use a long arm, and I feel like I would like that better...I feel like there would be better visibility because it feels like my machine is in the way and I find that I am hunching over to see what I am doing. Your block a day videos are inspiring me to try some quilting with rulers, so have just ordered a ruler foot for my machine. I love all of your work, it looks so beautiful and effortless...I dream of the day I can be closer to what you do.

I’ve actually been thinking of raising my longarm frame also due to back pain and being hunched over it for hours at a time. I’m new to longarm quilting so I haven’t used a panel but I’ve been doing lots of practicing on sheets from Goodwill. I want the practice but can’t bring myself to mess up any of my prettier fabric. ;) And yes, tension freaks me out but I’ve been getting more comfortable with it. Thanks for all the tips!!!

I have not quilted a panel yet. Only pieced quilts. From watching your videos online, I am becoming more comfortable with free-motion quilting (on my domestic machine). Mostly I have done E2E quilting on my quilting frame. Not yet proficient with free-motion quilting with the quilting machine. The problem is that I am afraid to mess up with an actual quilt. Silly I know. The preprinted panel might just be the answer to facing my fears. Thanks for all the great video tutorials. I love your work.

I always sew and quilt for other people. So I came across some fabric panels at Hancocks when they were still open. I really liked the color and design. I bought 4 and sewed them together. I had just bought my new longarm so I was like, yeah I’ll just quilt this for me so I have a blanket to lay with then get back to my other projects. I quilted paisley with loops on them. I even had a tension problem which you can see on half the quilt. Lol would you know this is my only quilt semi unfinished bc I still need to sew my binding on. I cheated an fused it on. Lmbo I always hand sew my binding. This is how I do work for me. I give 100% when I do it for other people. Go figure.

The most recent panel I used was in a Quilt of Valor. I bordered it and it turned out nicely. I am glad you mentioned tension as I struggle with it. My Gammill dealer suggested positioning my needle at either 5:30 or 6:30 when using SoFine thread. How do you load your needle? I have never tried loading it at any other position besides 6:00 and I use a magnet to make sure it is straight. I love my Gammill Elevate!

Thank you for the towa demo. Often wondered how to use it. Now I know! Yes, I’m actually quilting a quilt that it’s center is a panel of rich blues. It’s kind of an India mandala with co-ordinating fabric for a series of borders. Don’t use panels too often. If I really like the panel, I buy it. Now that I’m done, I’m going to search out a Towa ;-)

Just letting you know I just purchased a TOWA. I’m finally satisfied with the unknown bottom tension which makes the unknown top tension so much easier. Thank you!

I have quilted on panels, mostly for store samples at the shop I work at.
On another note, I have a sit down long arm and do a fair bit of ruler work, so normally have my ruler foot on. Recently I was quilting a sampler quilt for someone who just wanted it done and simple, so I did an all-over loopy design. I decided to pop on the open toe free motion foot that came with my machine and I'd never tried it before. Honestly, I didn't even notice it and I realized that I'm not usually even looking at my foot when I quilt, I guess I look more at where I'm going. So from now on I think I'm just going to keep the ruler foot on all the time. I don't have visibility issues with it with regular free motion quilting so I figure why not?!

I have quilted on panels (no seams, Yay). I also quilt one handed because I AM NOT ambidextrous and combining the left hand with my right actually makes my quilting worse. And I’m glad I’m not the only one with my machine set pretty high (like right under my boobs), but I never, ever have any back pain after even hours on the machine. It’s easier to see the quilt top as well. Happy quilting!

Wonderful videos! Love the fun Thursdays. I have never quilted on a panel - I’m at my 3rd completed quilt. I will try it someday soon I hope! 😉😎
