Hard to be underrated with how much everyone loves them and how many they sell. I think 1/3 of the cars in my neighborhood are CX-5s. There’s a few of all their other models too.
fully agree :) I dont understand why people can pay more and sacrify so much in terms of interior quality and driving experience to get 1-2 liters less per 100km. I also hate cvt, lack of sound insulation and cheap interior in toyota.. Design depends on preferences, so this is subjective
It is not underrated. They are popular, I see CX-5's and 50's everywhere. Miatas too, in fact. The design is more refined than most other brands at the same price point, yet the interior tech is relatively outdated and their cars are all slow / not powerful.for today's standards. It's a good brand in many ways but has some shortcomings. I think the public sentiment about it is accurate.
But the point here is that it's not underrated. The upside is that you get a similar reliability and price point to other standard Japanese and Korean brands while also having more refined and cohesive design and finishes which are closer to upscale Japanese brands like Lexus or Infiniti, but the trade-off is the infotainment and lack of performance. And none of the price-matched competitors are meant to be "performance car brands" either, although Mazda did dabble in that with the Mazdaspeed models and the RX models, but they really haven't had anything special as far as performance-oriented cars go since the RX-8 and Mazdaspeed 3 went out of production so yes they are also slow.
Another thing I will mention is that the newest gen Mazda 3 vastly reduced the amount of storage space in the back of the car, killing a lot of the practicality. I used to be able to fit a whole bicycle into the back of my 07 Mazda 3 without taking the wheels off! Which is absolutely not possible anymore. They made the "boot" a lot smaller on the inside even if the car's outside dimensions haven't changed too much. And as I recall from the test drive, it lost the rawness in handling and throttle response of the old one, it feels a lot more generic now. So I think this model in particular is rightfully unpopular because they reduced the things that made the older generations (2003-2012) cool. I haven't been in the 2013-2018 generation. I see a lot of CX-5's on the road, which makes sense because it's the first model in the range of hatchbacks they sell (i.e. all of their cars now) that actually has good storage space in the back. Even the CX-30 has less rear storage space than my old Mazda 3 had even though it's a bigger car.
I will probably buy a used current-gen Mazda 3 in 4-5 years. They are by far the best-looking (and also one of the few good-looking) hatchbacks left on the market
I’ve got about 9,000 miles on my 24’ hatchback. What a wonderful car, it truly feels special. At 33, this is the first time in life I’ve actually enjoyed my commute to work.
My girl has a 2021 Mazda 3, that for the longest time, (non-car enthusiast) people kept asking what it was, especially when it was handling the biggest snowstorm in Lake Tahoe This thing has had 75k aggressive and casual city/highway miles since we got it and it has only ever had a key fob battery go dead. Not one issue and we even got rear ended twice with minimal damage and no issues still. All in all Im so proud of this company and all the jumps in reliability, quality, styling and power. My mom (who was brand stubborn with Mercedez) has even switched over to Mazda CX-50 Meridian Edition and even hers is running smooth even tho it is a first year model.

You can't get the turbo charged awd version with a manual. That's why it's not on my radar. But if you only drive automatic, then this is incredible news
I broke down and bought a 2023 AWD Carbon Edition, gray with the maroon seats although I couldn't necessarily afford it. It seduced me, plain and simple. What a great car, and I can't imagine needing a turbo because 191 hp for a car that barely weighs 3,000 lbs is PLENTY of power in the sport mode. I love the understated dash that doesn't look like a video game. I should add the 6-speed automatic never leaves me wishing for a manual. It's that good.
That’s a great thought but not a deal-breaker on test-drive. I’ve got the manual in a ‘22 Premium and it’s really quick enough. If I want more power, I’m gonna buy a car with a bigger mill, period.

As someone whose Mazda is his favorite company and I have a Mazda 6 myself, I hope that the day will come and they will bring the Mazda 6 back to life with the cx90 engine and rear wheel drive. It would be a dream come true
Gorgeous and overall well made. It’s very quiet inside. The materials are quality. The major issue is the C-pillar and the blind spot it creates for the driver. That panel from the rear door to hatch is huge, the rear passenger windows need to be bigger, the pillar / body panel needs to be smaller, and that panel is very flexible. I leaned against it and it popped in. Luckily it popped back out. But, I can say that would never happen in my Mercedes.
Quality materials except for the piano black trim scratches easily and also a common complaint is the instrument cluster cover also is too soft and scratches too easily. I agree on the flexing C-pillar too....opening the fuel door makes the pillar slightly flex. It's very off-putting, but it's also just sheet metal and not the true structure of the car and these are as safe and strong as anything in a crash. The blind spot is bad, but on the other hand the driver assistance aids and rear camera are effective enough that I find I don't often look over my shoulder either anyway. I also came from years of driving VW Golfs that also had wide C-pillars so I guess I'm used to not having a panoramic view to the rear sides.
Didn't I read somewhere that they also dropped the price of the cx-90? I hope other manufacturers take note - car prices are out of control. I applaud Mazda for 'reading' the economy and adjusting prices.
They are trying to get back market share as they are once again not making any changes to the car, still same look for the past 5 years, Starting to be like Infinity, so its the only thing they can offer as a way to get people to look at the car.
I love the Mazda3 Hatch. I wish it had a nicer rear suspension set up and the C-Pillar window was placed better so the blind spot isn't so bad. Still an amazing car.
I still love all of the hatchback's exterior shapes. Especially with that C-pillar, it looks like a 2-door coupe design with 4-doors squeezed in. It's beautiful.
I just took an Uber ride a few days ago in one and I was absolutely surprised how much head room is in the back. I’ve been making fun of the “huntchback” for years, but I take it all back!
Purchased a 2022 premium trim, manual with red interiour and polymetal grey exteriour. Absolutely amazing car. Swapped the rims for Enkei Kojins, painted the roof black and tinted all windows along with reverse lights in the centre. Between all the cars I've owned, including much more expensive exotics, I've yet to receive as many compliments from strangers. Between the styling, handling, and the fact that Mazda is one of the last manufacturers ran by engineers, its by far the best in class.
Fantastic looking car. Thankyou for your time, effort and input on this vehicle. Curious, of the "few" remaining manual offerings still available, why are they almost all paired with FWD only?
I drive a 2018 Mazda 3 Hatchback touring and it has over 100k miles. It is so fun to drive, quick and agile and feels connected to the road. It also feels like I’m inside the car and not on top. Mazda is a great choice for someone who wants a premium/ luxury feel without the price and great reliability.
Came into the dealership ready to buy this car in 2021 but walked away with a Mazda 6 Carbon Edition. One of the best purchases I’ve ever made. I get compliments on it ALL the time and I love the fact that I never really see them on the road.
I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the Zeekr 001. EV shooting brake. Still has some physical controls. 789 hp. Can be had with an LFP battery that can charger 10-80 in 11 minutes at nearly 500 kw. and this thing is like 45k for the top trim in China. Their market is insane. looks to have some degree of personality in its styling too. not just flat surfaces. if this thing came to the US and was priced the same (pipe dream, I know), i'd jump in a heart beat
I LOVE this car. Only one thing, I wish the gas pedal wasn't organ type, and was placed properly for heel and toe. I tried one, and was pretty akward due to how far gas pedal was for it being organ pedal that it makes me to do a certain move of my foot to push both pedals. Well...i really want one, so i am considering auto model. I will always have one manual car, so that's okay I guess
I had a first generation hatch. The current one is ok, but I really don't like the compression of the glass area. Just take the beltline down and make it less of a hockey stick towards the back and to me it would be almost perfect. And, I get that the infotainment interface is superior, but they're not realistically ever going to sell more of these (or any Mazda) without a touchscreen.
I have the gunmetal grey as my work car, and I love the design inside and out. The dial rules. I think it looks best in that deep deep maroon on the top spec, still looks like a concept car. It has a timelessness about it, Mazda at its best. Any update is almost arbitrary.
Love my 2021 6spd manual Mazda3 hatch so much fun and a near perfect daily driver. a very nice balance between luxury features, the cabin / cockpit interior with the nice buttons and controls, the handling, and at least for my manual I can get much better MPG than Mazda claims (and even when I drive it really aggressively / fast, I still get like 29mpg city). The transmission shifts SO smooth and feels great to drive around town and overall a great driver experience with everything combined. I just fall in love with it more and more as I own it, I even love it more than my NA Mazda Miata.
It's crazy to me that only 3 years ago, you could get a fully optioned Mazda 6 for less than $37k and now the Mazda 3 has surpassed that. Still a great value, but far from the BARGAIN it was when you could get one for $28k
My wife has the top of the line CX5, it’s nice but the infotainment system to me is not intuitive and there’s too much piano black plastic making the interior look dirty. The Bose speakers are good. The exterior is style is very agreeable. The only issue I have with the HB is the rear, it’s a bit bulbous to me and there are big blind spots. I liked the prior design rear more.
Imo they need to drop the price of the 3. They neutered the trims so hard. Having to get maxed out trims to get a bose stereo is nuts. My 19 awd preferred has it and it only msrp'ed at 26K.
Agreed. Save the manuals! I really like this car, especially the NA hatchback with the manual. However, I think it is a little overpriced, and I really hate that it has a torsion beam rear suspension. Also, why is it more expensive than the sedan? Nevertheless, I am considering upgrading my daily driver next year, and the Mazda 3 hatch is on my short list.
From what I understand, this is a great implementation of the torsion beam style. In my opinion, it is better to have a well designed and tuned torsion beam than a slapdash McPherson strut.
I just wish Mazda would stop this whole "we're too grown up to put a MazdaSpeed badge on our cars anymore" skit and just make another fun car, the turbo just is just no comparison to the old MazdaSpeed stuff. It's just sad when companies think they are mature to have fun and give customers what they want.

We have driven different Mazda cars from 2008 (Mazda 3) until our CX-8 from 2019. I really like their design philosophy and that they think out of the box. I very like the Mazda 3, also as a sedan. Unfortunately they are very late (too late?) into hybrids and EVs. Here in Thailand Mazda’s sales have dropped significantly because they didn’t introduce new models. The current CX-5 is still the same car as from 2017. They even didn’t change the interior as in other markets. My Mazda dealer since 2008 has abandoned the brand and sells now EVs.
The mazda 3 is a beautiful hatch that NEEDS a more potent motor as the torque only starts to climb at around 4500 RPM. a 2005 carry has as much pickup as it even with the 6speed manual
7:40 Totally agree! Black wheels are such a mess in today’s automotive world. People who like black wheels on cars, don’t know anything about wheels (design)!
As an Engineer, I understand why some designers can’t create the flow we all want. Think of the infotainment unit on top of the dash. It’s not perfect, but much better than other Makes. Engineers need to integrate the bits and pieces they have available from outside vendors. It’s all about cost. This Mazda 3 Hatch is a well put together machine. Kudos to Mazda.
Im Toyota’s owner 😅 want to drive a Mazda vehicle hope the new cx50 HYBRID come ASAP I heard good news from the interior beside its automatic transmission which it’s the best love it ❤
I totally agree the manual 3 is the one! I love this car and it’s the only one I would trade my Miata for because it’s sporty, fun AND VERY PRACTICAL. Affordable too!
sedans are always cheaper than hatch. hatch is higher part count and more complexity. large closure means stronger components, addition wiper and washer nozzle and water pipe running the length of car. different sheet metal tooling, longer/ larger closure seal etc etc
Sedan is made in Mexico. Hatch is made in Japan. Still on the fence about this hatch model It has a lot of pluses and some minuses. Egg shape rear, thin paint, and quirky transmission options per package level meaning Mazda wants to play mind games with what you do not want but will have to buy it to get what options are a priority to you.
I’m one of the few people who actually like piano black. I had it in my RX-8 for over 13 years and loved it. The trick? Just be careful to not scratch it.
BAD. ASS. That thing looks absolutely gorgeous. I just wish they'd bring back MazdaSpeed and release that trim level for this. That'd be brutally awesome. EDIT: oooo or maybe a Spirit-R!
I agree that Mazda 3 is great and underrated car, but I think that sedan variant is even more underrated. More serious, bigger car, with bigger trunk and bright interior, not that claustrophobic in the back
I don't know about the US but all the cars from Mazda are built in Japan for Europe so I'd guess the reason for the price drop is the weakness of the yen which is great for the end buyer outside of Japan, you can have a fantastic well built car cheap that is also very premium.
I own a mazda and like it so not being down on the brand, but when car shopping i looked at the hatch and hated it from the inside. Sure, outside it is beautiful but sitting in it with the horrible rear visibility, both 3/4 and rear with the tiny rear glass, coupled with the high side sill height and/or too low hip point, i felt as if i were sitting in a tank looking out the turret slit. It was positively claustrophobic. Imo, mazda could have made the rear glass larger and the side rear window opening larger w/o compromising the design....as well, imo, mazda needs to fix the high sill height on all its models. Even my gti has a higher hip point and better outward visibility and does not feel claustrophobic.
I agree with most of this, but the driver assist features and rear camera are very effective and make the visibility much less of an issue in the real world.
My wife has a 2021 that she loves. Her only regret is that she did not get the turbo. It has become a bit of an obsession for her. It really is a beautiful car. Second consecutive Mazda we have owned and we are sold.
The base model is a couple hundred bucks cheaper! Prices were raised on all other models. Primarily the hatches. . Especially the premium turbo was raised $700 bucks!! Ridiculous! The sedan is cheaper because it is built in Mexico, not Japan like the hatch! It's long past due for a redesign too! Especially the infotainment!

Great review as usual! I am really looking forward to the ‘25 Mazda cx-30 hybrid
Thoughts?
By the way, love your accent
I hope the Miata NE is not a hybrid or electric.
This gen Mazda 3 would age so beautifully!!
Great Christopher Walken impression.
THE most beautiful car in his segment Period.
0:07 it already happened with the Dacia spring a few weeks ago, but that's not in the US.
Very happy with my 2021 Mazda 3, very refined engine and smooth manual shifter.
Whens it getting a redesign?
We have had a cx5 non turbo and now have a 2024 3 turbo sedan We love it so much fun and well built
Came into the dealership ready to buy this car in 2021 but walked away with a Mazda 6 Carbon Edition. One of the best purchases I’ve ever made. I get compliments on it ALL the time and I love the fact that I never really see them on the road.
Can I have manual on a CX-3 or CX-30, and no plastic around the wheels?
Just get a mazda3 hatch. That's exactly what you're asking for
I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the Zeekr 001.
I love the sedan so much more... Larger boot, lighter interior, much better looking imo... We don't get the turbo version in Australia... No idea why!
Does it have cruise control?
@@redhood2171 yes, it has adaptive cruise control
The fact that it weighs about 300 pounds less than the AWD/turbo version, I’m sure, makes a huge difference, too.
The current mazda3 gave me 90s vibe but with modern features . Loved my car gonna keep it for as long as I can!
The bonus is that the Mazda 3 is made in Japan.
Actually unfortunately only the Mazda 3 with the 2.5 litre engine is made in Japan. The 2.0 litre Mazda 3 is made in Mexico.
@@jonnn983 …if I was in need of a new vehicle the Mazda 3 would be in the running, but only the GT with the 2.5 litre.
Mine was built in Mexico
@@Darkeninggg …so you have the 2 litre engine? How is it?

The plastic around the CX30 is not ugly! - it serves many purposes and looks good
It's crazy to me that only 3 years ago, you could get a fully optioned Mazda 6 for less than $37k and now the Mazda 3 has surpassed that.
My gen poo speed 3 was one of the most favorite cars I have owned. More than my VA Chasis STI second to my B9 S4
In my country there’s no manual option for the hatchback 😢
I don't understand what the problem is with the torsion beam suspension.
From what I understand, this is a great implementation of the torsion beam style. In my opinion, it is better to have a well designed and tuned torsion beam than a slapdash McPherson strut.
Where is this car made?
I feel they need to put the heads up display in the carbon trims
2025 sport select sedan, got for 23885 not including GPS tracking or tax. 10 year 100,000 powertrain warrenty from dealership. I'm very happy with it.
The mazda 3 is a beautiful hatch that NEEDS a more potent motor as the torque only starts to climb at around 4500 RPM. a 2005 carry has as much pickup as it even with the 6speed manual
I thought i was the only 1 that found them really good looking.
You are not. I think you look good too… I mean the car looks good.
@@2004cyrus LOL what.
@@Jigsjigzthat old picture of you is a nice looking man! Hahaha sorry not sorry.
Im Toyota’s owner 😅 want to drive a Mazda vehicle hope the new cx50 HYBRID come ASAP I heard good news from the interior beside its automatic transmission which it’s the best love it ❤
Make a video about mazda iconic sp please.
I love my Miata RF! And this hatchback is just out of sight! Best looking hatchback I have ever seen! And, you can get it with a 6-speed!
I totally agree the manual 3 is the one! I love this car and it’s the only one I would trade my Miata for because it’s sporty, fun AND VERY PRACTICAL. Affordable too!
I LOVE Mazda, I really hope they will stay true to this beautiful design language
what is the car at 6:43? It looks epic.
I wish we got the Suzuki Swift or the VW Polo in the USA.
co-worker just bought a blue sedan one
Better than a Corolla...but shoulda got a hatch
@@fortheloveofnoise sedan>hatch
Mazda 3 sedan is assembled in Mexico , the hatchback is assembled in Japan hence the price difference , is more expensive to import via sea vs land
Can you make a video on the new Fiat Grande Panda? I think it’s a very cool design
sedans are always cheaper than hatch. hatch is higher part count and more complexity. large closure means stronger components, addition wiper and washer nozzle and water pipe running the length of car. different sheet metal tooling, longer/ larger closure seal etc etc
Also the sedan is assembled in Mexico for the North American market. The Hatchback comes from Japan.
The hatchback is a great workmanship, but the sedan is also quite good.
I have had my 2012 mazda 6 gt v6 for 8 yrs I love it got it with 13k miles on it great car!!
There was a leak 2 months ago that said the Gen 5 will be exclusively electric
GM did a similar pricing move with the Trax
Bought a 2024 a couple months ago...trading it in for a 2025 for sure. Getting the manual transmission this time lol
Hey bro you think they will remove the piano black finally?
I’m one of the few people who actually like piano black. I had it in my RX-8 for over 13 years and loved it. The trick? Just be careful to not scratch it.
I know you don't have Renault in the US, but here in Europe they dropped the price of the facelifted Captur and Clio!
BAD.
More serious, bigger car, with bigger trunk and bright interior, not that claustrophobic in the back
Indeed, the sedan looks outstanding!! and you rarely see them on the street
Why does the UK not get the mazda 3 turbo? 😭😭😭
they need a 6 spd manual paired with the 2.5 turbo
In europe we dont have the 2.5 Turbo Version... :(
The highest HP we get are 165hp.. with a 2 liter engine.
I don't know about the US but all the cars from Mazda are built in Japan for Europe so I'd guess the reason for the price drop is the weakness of the yen which is great for the end buyer outside of Japan, you can have a fantastic well built car cheap that is also very premium.
US hatchbacks come from Japan, US sedans come from Mexico.
