Chickens are Houdini's. Yep the tunnels are great for weed control and depositing fertilizer. It also supplements your chicken food. Thanks for sharing!
Just a word of caution. If your girls can get out - predators can get in! I would never leave my flocks out unsupervised. Plus I know chicken wire is cheap, but we only use hardware cloth.
I’m toying around the idea of a Chunnel or an enclosed lightweight pen that I can move around easily. I had to stop free ranging my hens last year because of hawk attacks that were deadly to two hens. However I would like to have them free range safely and also improve my soil.
I’ve bought 1/2 in galvanized hardware mesh , going to try something similar, thinking I can use tent steaks to hold it down, and they will be easy to pull for relocating
I would line the ground with the chicken wire, and use galvanized hardware mesh for the tunnel, or if you want to stick with the wire, put support inside, anything hoop shaped, PVC. air aluminum hoolahoops cut in half?
I know you're trying to go cheap but.. my advice would be to get a heavier gauge fence. Something like dog fence, goat/sheep fence, deer fence or even hog fence, but hog fence is not good if you have predators in the area as the open squares in the fence are kind of big. Then take your fence and bend in into a "U" shape. Then cut the cross member wires on the bottom of both sides. This will allow you to take the U, turn it with the legs facing down and push the wires down into the ground. Then just stake it every couple feet on both sides. It will be much studier, give your hens a little more room and they won't be able to escape from it due to the 6 inches or so of wire that you pushed down into the ground. I hope my description makes sense. You can connect the tunnel to your chicken run using a piece of your regular chicken wire. and you can close off the other end with another piece of your regular chicken wire.
Hey, a follow up. I just came across this video which is using the exact same design/construction of the Chicken Run that I was talking about. Hope you find it helpful.
Use taller fencing material. Use wire ties to make a cylinder, an actual LONG tunnel. Press it flat on one side, for the bottom. The best thing about this is you do not have to make multiple tunnels. Just move the one you have. no escape is possible. The chickens will continue to help you in the garden, they can not escape, and no animals will harm them.

Oh shut it clown lol
Next time use 6 foot fence and bend it to have a flat bottom as well. A closed tunnel is best.
No you don't really want to do this as the chickens can end up tearing their feet up when they scratch at the ground

Just thinking a 2x4 at the ground on each side with wire stapled to it might work good also.
That’s a good idea. Super Mobile, easy to move. Prob going to use 2x4 fencing.
The whole idea is to not waste more money bozo lol... so take your 2x4's and shove it up where the sun dont shine moron
I have their pen/tunnel around the perimeter of the property to keep the weeds away. They do a great job.

Then they can’t scratch
Considering something like this, good idea. Looking goid.
If you use cattle panels it holds it square
