    =======================
    The Nimitz Class Carriers are the main backbone of America's ability to project power anywhere in the world. The Nimitz is powered by two nuclear pressurized water reactors and carries an assorted air wing of 85 Fighter/Attack Jets, Anti-Submarine aircraft, Airborne Early Warning Planes, and also retains several SH-60B Sea Hawk Helicopters for Search and Rescue and ASW duties. The Nimitz has a whopping 97,000 tons of displacement and its length is approximately three football fields. Since the first Nimitz Class Carrier, The USS Nimitz (CVN-68), entered service in May 1975 there have been nine other Nimitz Class Carriers produced. The Nimitz made its first combat cruise during the ill-fated Operation Eagle Claw. The Nimitz Class has since proven itself in operations in Iraq, the former Yugoslavia, and Afghanistan. At current projections, The Last Nimitz is not scheduled to be retired till the year 2058, at which point the last of the Nimitz will have been fully replaced by the Gerald R. Ford Class.

    Carriers are almost always on the move. Firstly because moving keeps them able to launch aircraft, secondly because they are mostly on their way somewhere and thirdly nuclear power costs nothing in terms of burning fuel cost. In addition, keeping them in motion also keeps them an exact distance apart from safety because they have speed and steerage control Most refuels are about 14 knots. Stationary vessels are prone to drift. You can't always just 'drop an anchor'

    @colo250 Yes you go through bootcamp first. After all, you are a sailor before you are a cook. Once you pass boot camp, then you go on to your schools that teach you your job. CS (cooks) school is located in Great Lakes, IL down the road from boot camp. Its a pretty nice set up. I've never been inside of it but I think the building is only a few years old.

    It's actually FAR more dangerous, because the ship doesn't have positive control over it's movement when at a standstill. Two ships at anchor right next to each other will swing around the chain and collide. They're also usually way too deep to anchor, and when anchored a carrier has to be thousands of feet away from other ships. With the procedures in place, side-by side refueling in motion is the safest way to conduct underway replenishment.

    Why doesn't the carrier and refueling vessel stop and anchor during refueling? It seems a lot less dangerous that way.

    @butchd2010 that's because it's easier to reuse some clips and cut down on the amount of filming needed

    By basic training I'm guessing you mean how to shoot a rifle and maneuver through obstacles All sailors get a *basic* training since they need every man they can get in emergencies including non combat ratings.

    They say that a carrier has 3 lines of defense, it actually has 4, they forgot to mention the guided missile armed cruisers and destroyers.
