OK, I'm sold. This is so comprehensive an explanation, and I appreciate the research on the Erlking. Just a few thoughts. Owls are also considered a harbinger of death, which also cements the murder is imminent. Joe said H:PII is "the genre of infinity, which is expressed through holograms". I think Murders is the only song where infinite/infinity is mentioned, and I think you need mirrors for a hologram, so to me this song reflects what he's saying. Since MatPat can't do song theory, I'm glad we have you
Heck, even the fact that we're calling the main protagonist, Mr. Resident Minor himself, "Simon" shows how influential The Mind Electric is by itself and as you said, whatever people interpret that song as then gets retrofitted onto the album
I like how you call them Simon and Betty like in Adventure time, I don't know if it's on purpose because this is exactly what happened between them in the show (however, the ice king didn't want to kill her though he wanted her back)
Luxy, you have outdone yourself. Not even the online conspiracy board I set up for this includes this much detail. The Frank Sinatra allusion, The fountain of infinite mirror, all of it was all a missing puzzle piece I needed to finish this story. By the way, I hope your space station level 7 video also gives a little more attention to the Japanese definitions, kanji hold many meanings. I have plenty resources for Japanese translations if you need any! I pray to the algorithm that this channel gets the love it deserves.
The thing throughout this album that keeps poking at me is that after her death guilt takes his mind later in the album she is heard as almost a ghost with a few words in stranded lullaby and maybe the mind electric
Phenomenal work. I just recently found your Isle Unto Thyself video, and have just watched through the entire series up to this point. Hands down probably the best analyses on Hawaii: Part II I've seen. Also, as a german native who's had to analyse Goethe's works at school on various accounts, I feel it's important to note that the story of Der Erlkönig clearly suggests that the Erlking is just a figment of the child's imagination, and that he is suffering from a very strong fever, which causes hallucinations and eventually his death, meanwhile his father is trying to safely return him home or presumably to a doctor, so he can be treated. In case you can find any meaning from it, there is also a double meaning in "Erlkönig". It originally comes from a danish myth, the "Ellerkonge", or the elven king. When Goethe translated the myth and wrote his ballad, "Ellerkonge" became "Erlkönig", which sounds more like the 'Erlen' king, an 'Erle' being a type of tree (an Alder according to google, I don't know that many english tree names). That's why the Erlking is sometimes represented as some elven king, and sometimes as a wooden forest spirit, and also why in the ballad when the son talks about Erlkings daughters, the father responds by talking about the willow trees.
I appreciated the debunking of the 'Simon was framed' theory, becouse I've always thought it was far less interesting and made far less sense, but I also want to defend my favorite song's part in it, becouse I dont think The Mind Electric on its own even supports that theory, simply becouse Simon is pleading insanity, and there is no reason why he would make that claim if he were framed
I find it a bit difficult to follow along with your explanations when you refer to "line 3" or something. Don't get me wrong I love these videos, but I think it would be just that much better if we had the verse you were analysing next to you with the current line highlighted or something. Then again I have no idea how difficult that would be to do, I have no editing experience. Just thinking from a viewers perspective. Much love ❤️
Me and my boyfriend have been tying to create a musical about the album and this series has been really really helpful on how the story would go, so thank you very much and I can’t wait to binge the series you make
I love this song even more now that I understand the meaning even more. The idea that Simon killed her makes the song even more dark, dramatic, and twisted. The lyrics are genius. I’ve also thought about how the “fountain of infinite mirror” could also represent the ocean, meaning that he planned to discard her body in the ocean one he was done with her. (The ocean can be seen as an “infinite fountain”)
16:05 I always interpreted this lyric as Simon finally remembering what happened the day Betty died, specially since shortly after this is the whole "All for nothing at all" and "**I** was in the forest looking to see the trees.".
i am so glad that i finally found a video that supports my own theory of Simon killing his lover. all the other ones talk about someone else doing it but nooo!! so thank you for this video :) i loved watching it
I always had the Impression that Murders was Simon being interrogated and eventually realizing that he was the one who killed Betty (I prefer the name Stella :] ) then causing him to later plead Insanity in the Mind Electric
This may be an insignificant detail in your Analysis, present or future, but the words "With something to do" Makes me think of him now focusing on hiding the body instead of mourning longer. This would also further prove the reason he claims Insanity in The Mind Electric.
I always thought that the “All for nothing at all” verse was sung by Betty/Stella’s character, as she refers to her years of trying to fall back in love with Simon after their personal struggles and then her disappointment when after finally reviving their love; Simon went and betrayed their trust and well… MURDERED her!!!! You also mentioned in the video that Joe /The Narrator uses different voices (as well as different pronouns) to show the listener which character is doing what - and I’ve noticed that in the final verse, Joe uses a much higher voice than what he uses for Simon, Apollo and his own character, which could also a indicate that it was Stella/Betty saying those final lines? Although, in all the other songs that include Betty/Stella, she is always presented with a female vocalist, suggesting that perhaps it was actually Simon singing those lines to us, but Betty/Stella had previously said it to Simon but during the events of the instrumental moment in the song (so we didn’t hear it) and by Simon singing it to us, he is mocking Betty; showing us that he has no guilt about what he’s done This is a GREAT explanation anyways ,looking forward to The Mind Electric!!!!!!!!
In the mind electric there is a line that goes “sorry your honor may I explain, my brain has claimed its glory over me.” That line, I would argue, makes more sense with your interpretation.
I don't even like the music here that much but I always find myself thoroughly enjoying your storytelling regardless; makes for great background noise too! :))
Outstanding analysis and explanation. This album became one of my many hyperfixations last year, I analyzed it so much and spent many hours attempting to decipher it with mixed results. Your breakdown and interpretation of the album is phenomenal and truly sheds so much light into this abstract puzzle. I look forward to your next analysis video!
Just a little feedback for future videos/the long combo video. When you refer to each stanza, it might be helpful to have the lyrics up next to your character. The album cover is pretty, but you character off to the side looks lonely, and I can't remember all the lines only listening to them once. So you can kill two birds with one stone by filling the 2/3rds space to the left with the lyrics (or other visuals). Love the assessments so far! I look forward to the Mind Electric!
I am using these videos to make my own story in my head about Hawaii Part ii so here it is so far: Simon goes to Hawaii because his mind (Apollo) is telling him to find something new, but soon he meets Betty during black rainbows, which that song describes a bad breakup with a ex partner (I also think isle to thyself could be the same but with Simon) Soon, they meet at a wedding because the Groom is Simon’s friend and The bride is Betty’s family member. They dance together and soon fall in love. During their 2nd date in the forest, Simon got a little too silly and killed her (Edit: I totally forgot that Betty and Simon have to get married so um shhhh)
Simon is literally me fr. I am the rot, the erlking. My brain had claimed its glory over me. Always surrounded by shadows of people not there, always asking hate me, hate me not. Always longing for the fountain of infinite mirror but living in fear of it. Legit fr fr no cap ong simon is literally me. I was in the forest looking to see the trees but none were there
As someone who started at mind electric and then left and finally revisted this album and its theories. I personally never understood how simon could have been framed, and I believe that your interpretation is more valid and makes more sense. And it allows the story thus far to include every song that the "framed simon" theorist throw out the window. Which makes the album more enjoyable now that Simon isn't framed.
The monster in the background is supposed to be an Anglerfish. While the moon is its lure bulb. This is why I believe that the Anglerfish represents Apollo.
i always figured the ‘fountain of infinite mirror’ was referring to myrrh, and it was a fountain of infinite myrrh. while watching this, i remembered that myrrh was often used to anoint kings, and so i was theorising if maybe Simon looking for the fountain of infinite myrrh, referring to kings, was him looking for the Earl king/Apollo, for advice but couldn’t find him, or it was him wanting to give full control to Apollo, due to infinite myrrh, or infinite kinghood, aka, infinite Earl king
Fun Fact: one theme of the album is 9/11 so some of the lyrics of murders (the leaves , references of trees and other stuff) can be a clear example. I think joe confirmed it btw
Plus, im not sure if i missed it but in mind electric the "defendant" which i beleve to be simon says "my brain has claimed its power over me i have. good heart albeit insane" which if simon was on trial thats him trying to plead insanity due to appolo
I'm a little late but I would like to point out that the demo for Murders uses "I" "we" and "me" instead of "he" "him" "his" which could possibly prove how Simon murdered Betty.
the mind electric disproves the simon is framed theory if you listen to the song, im not sure i understand the argument any other way than simon and his split personality or whatever have you being responsible for the murder
Honestly i do believe that simon has a good heart, albeit insane, very, VERY INSANE and that he did trully did love betty but apollo got to him and made him murder her.
Just saying... Everything happening in the musical can be tied to Simon and Betty from AT, Simon kinda killed Betty when he made her go insane while in a state of insanity himself. She quite litterally became another person, dying in the process

I’m pretty sure that fountain of infinite mirror is a reference to Hawaiian mythology (as in the mirrored rainbow) look it up. Very interesting
Do you have any links for this? Sadly I couldn't find anything about it on Google

I usually see an interrogation taking place during the first half of the Mind Electric, though Simon disassociates during it.
