  • Interview with Frank Holmgren - he was the last living survivor of the U.S.S. Juneau and he served with the Sullivan Brothers.
The story of the Sullivan Brothers: When World War II strikes the country, the brothers feel compelled to serve their nation in its time of need. What an amazing story of fortunate, happen-chance survival! He could not swim, he by chance acquired a preserver, then he goes down with the ship only to somehow pop back up to the surface on his own! I joined the Navy 20 years later in 1961 in peace time having no idea what I was getting into. I could swim on the surface but not underwater which concerned me if I ever had to swim under burning oil. My Boot Camp in San Diego was 8 weeks. In the swimming tests I could not get my butt under water and I could feel the instructor's long paddle smacking me to go deeper. I never learned how and never needed to swim under water.
