I think the thing with Matthais is that he truly believed in the Fjerdan trials. Like, he was taught his whole life to believe that Grisha were evil and should be treated as such. So when every Grisha who went under trial was found guilty, he really believed in those verdicts, and that's why he had no remorse. But when he was told to kill them all without trial, it really threw him off. And, obviously, meeting Nina is going to bring up many questions about things he thought he knew

@@MonicaCatapusan He has quite extensive horse ridding traning from Prince Caspian movie. He did a lot of ridding there. And he spoke about it in Caspian interview at that time. He also did show called Westworld, where he rode too. So he is quite experienced horse rider. I can say, that is always pleassure to watch actors, who can actually ride on screen, because sadly more often they can’ t. He must have had really good trainers on Caspian, because he has really good seating and they drilled the basics into him as well. Take this from someone, who has been ridding for over 20 years. Jessie on the other hand seems not that experienced. Looks like she has ridding before and has the confidence, her seatting is okay, but her legs are wrong. I was surprised she managed to keep the stirrups, but I bet she looses them often when ridding 🙂 loosing stirrups mean you feet are falling out of stirrups especially during canter or gallop. Sorry I got a bit technical. Also she is ridding smaller horse with smoother canter movement. Ben is ridding bigger horse with quite big movement when cantering. So the fact that he remains seated even though the rocking motion of that horse is much bigger, shows how good he really is to stay with that horse movement and not to start bounce up and down in the saddle.

Otkazat'sya is the ravkan word for non-grisha, kinda like muggle for Harry Potter.

And then we get like an extra feature at the end of the book that is a letter from Mal to Alina. (That she never got :( which explains his friends deaths and why he misses her so much).

The question on whether the General likes her because of her powers or just because of her is a very interesting one, and very important specially coming from the books... But it is probably a discussion for when you post the final episodes of the show :)!
But all I will say is that they dynamic is really interesting, and also deep... Their connection is complicated indeed; and it does have a lot to do with their powers... The uniqueness of both their powers, how their powers work and interact, their relationship plays with that analogy of the "Light/Darkness" and how they are two sides of the same coin... And also how the repercussions of their powers affects them.
His character is indeed deep LOL

Nah, show Mal is book Mal, but you have to read the subtext. Eg past Alina's assumptions that he doesn't care in the books, and you never find it what was going on for Mal til waaaay after the case. It's supposed to be unreliable narrator, she thinks the Darkling is good, she thinks Mal doesn't care, but you get subtext and then actual confirmation that that's not the case. Mal had a sense of humour in the books, and his dialogue and actions always made it clear he was more dedicated to Alina, but she is both insecure about it, and also... just takes him for granted, doesn't question what's going on for Mal for long stretches of time, which means readers who aren't looking for the clues that Alina is missing, don't notice what was going on for Mal either.
They just made it more obvious in the show what was going on, as the author realised a lot of people had, well, missed it (eg darkling/Zoya was also subtext in the books) The letters are from the books & author, the stuff Mal does is from books... It's the same Mal.

He was raised to believe that Grisha are not natural and therefore must be taken to face a "judgment" in a country named Fjerda, where the boat is going (of course the judgement is bullshit, Grisha's only crime is to exist making all of them guilty) but Matthias still thinks he's a "soldier" working to restore the order etc
