she really understood what he was saying and had depths of knowledge in the topics to ask good questions. top notch stuff.
Re: not moving the camera unless it means something. Thank god. I thought I was a lone voice in the wilderness.
watch nightcrawler, they applied that rule very well in that movie
Yes they did. Or any movie before 1985 for that matter.
+Silvie Monk you're wrong. I bet you didn't even look.
Abel I'm wrong for agreeing with you. Hmmm...OK.
I've said this before, never start a movie or a screenplay, unless you know the ending. I can't stress this enough, but many screenwriters I talk with, they spend weeks, months working on an outline, instead in their head work on a beginning and an end and what happens in between, let it be a surprise. Let the characters lead. Thanks, FC and Mr. Sachs for your time here. Lots of info to digest, but helpful.
Thanks, Brandon. Glad to hear someone agrees with me. Don't get me wrong, I do believe that if you are writing a TV pilot you should outline, specifically your characters, for in TV is more about having well developed characters because a writer gets to write the pilot episode, then other writers are brought in to develop the storyline for weeks and years, depending on the success of the series. Thanks again, buddy.
The interviewer was surprisingly great. Just the right questions at the right moment of time.
We appreciate your good words, we're glad to have you watch this one.
Film Courage Do covey my warm regards to them. 😊
fucking agree
Where can I view the movie that he shot with the Canon T2i. It's weird I'm seeing this video, because I was at a party last night taking photos and the other guy there photographing as well was using a T2i.
really wish more interviews where like this, it's smart...
Great, thank you!
Here are the ten rules,
1) finish the movie!
2) write the end of the movie before you start shooting.
3)avoid camera movement
4)......
Fuck if I know. Just listen to Tom Sachs be awesome for 16 minutes.
great great interview, she killed it
Great thoughts. (I wonder why he apparently prefers to do documentaries as opposed to fiction.)
Douglas Mayfield maybe he has no original ideas
Well done! Good stuf!
I could think of worse things than getting paid a lot of money to do something you don’t love.
You know, like the vast majority of people who don’t get to do what they love for a career. And they don’t get paid well for said un-fulfilling work. And contrary to an over-used narrative, that’s not for lack of hard work.
You are very correct, it's a very revealing and quite disgusting thing to say "for me the worst thing I can imagine is to be very well paid for something you don't love to do", and the flip side of that the notion that if you aren't well paid you must be "lazy" is worse, it belies astonishing privilege; these people live on a different planet. He goes onto to say "cheap cameras are disposable" "it's only $500" ugh, for normal people a disposable camera is something you used to be able to buy for $5. David Graeber talks about this in Bullshit jobs, that often the most essential jobs (such as care giving) are the least well-paid because their very essentialness means someone has to do it. You had the appalling spectacle of the British government organising a "clap for essential workers" event and then voting to give them only a 1% pay rise, or here in Ireland where our government voted to not pay student nurses, who are often working 16 hour shifts for free! And of course the bailout for the people in the US, the $2,000 cheque that is really $1,400 whilst these lying assholes throw money at their friends in Wall Street.
He talks about "character" and "will" ugh, give me a break. "I want my sculpture to be perfect like an iPhone," and I want to beat him up for his lunch money.
@@seanankerr2864 hahaha. Mate, that was beautiful. You hit the nail on the head! It’s so unfortunate. The Democratic Party in America (supposedly the working folk’s party) also voted against $15/hr. If minimum wage had kept pace with inflation/productivity, minimum wage would currently be over $23/hour. It’s truly insane
I love Tom Sachs’ artwork. But when I hear him speak like this, I realize how truly disconnected he is from the real working person’s plight. And from the videos he has that speak of his strict demands for working in his studio, he sounds awful to work for. I cannot imagine he pays much at all, and he sees it simply as a privilege to work for him, so he can pay pennies.
Tom Sachs = Basic OCD fueled by Money
this guy is smooth
This man is god for me
You should form a Tom Sachs cargo cult, build your own space program and hope that he will come.
+MrMilarepa108 nononono doing the same definitely won't attract him to me, I need to show him my passion, my way. He is a great source of motivation for me.
+SKUPT I don't know man, sympathetic magic works in mysterious ways. But of course, in the end, it always comes down to the question whether you're willing to do the work. Decide whether "you should quit school now and get a job as a dishwasher" is the sort of advice you're willing to take. #dedication
SKUPT the Only True God's and Goddesses and all other Divinely Beings are in Heaven and by a Divinely Being I mean Jesus Buddha Prophet Muhammad They are all in Heaven this guy isn't a God
SKUPT +MrMilarepa108 tom sachs said he is honored when people recreate his work as long as they take it to the next level. It’s only when people do it worse that annoys him.
Sometimes when enough people tell you something is good and you don't understand it, you start to fake that you think it's good too. I think this guy is like that, and I don't think he's all that great or brilliant.
No, Tom is that good!
If you don't understand it then try again :)
Why's that?
Frank M So if everyone except you thinks his stuff is good but you disagree then in actuality his stuff is not good because....?.......
just the level of craft is good enough to be in a museum of whatever they make. I think most artists dream of a studio of producing artifacts as a kind cultural factory but very few can hustle intellectually and financially to that level of distinction...
this guy is creepy and weird
nah hes sick
How?
The tony stark of art
I wonder how this guy makes Money for living. Also if you cannot make perfect things just make shitty things and make a story behind it. No offence and no triggers. It takes lot of courage to do what he does amongst hypocrites like me. 👌
I feel like if anyone who wasn't an artists tried listening to this dude, they just would feel silly... or mad lmao this guy is on some shit, but it's artistic.
Genius
