One of the biggest problem is people start college without knowing what they want to be. Wasting time and money. Racking up loans and then not graduating. I was focused, got my BSN with only 30k in loans. Now making over 230k/ yr as a travel nurse. So college was for me, you just have to be smart about it.

You are right. It took me 10 years to get a degree in something that requires a graduate degree before you make the big money. I should have just done accounting major & became a Financial Analyst, but was told Acct, was hard. I took 2 classes in Acct, & got an A. What's hard for others, may be a breeze for you.

I’m an advocate for tech schools. I am a product of a tech school and a 4 year. Depending on the career you want , especially if it’s medicine, law, education, engineering you NEED to go to college. Other areas such as cosmetology, surgical tech, automotive, HVAC, welding, CDL etc. you do not need a 4 year degree.
The reality is things have shifted. Years ago college was way more affordable and it was encouraged in many households, it is not so much now. So it’s simply that times are different. Never regret getting a degree, but make sure your children, nieces and nephews, those you are mentoring now know that there is another way to be successful.

I'm still of the thought process that our community needs to maintain college as a stepping stone to remain competitive and relavent in the work force with the exception of having a job that has physical requirements. We do not need to give the folks another reason to put a check mark in the box to rule us out of the playing field. While college may not be for everyone, it does add value if used in the right way.

    • @donzell1738

There are certain careers where college and higher education is a necessity e.g. doctors, lawyers, social work and psychology. If my doctor was self taught I'd have a problem. However the college system itself is a scam, a gimmick. Who benefits the most from the money that these colleges pull in? It really doesn't make sense to go into debt just to maybe land a job in the field you went to college for, and spend the rest of your life paying off that debt. I'm a big advocate for investing in oneself however not at the expense of my spiritual, mental, physical and financial future.

I’m of the mindset that college isn’t for everyone and I went to university and got a masters. When my parents were teens, in the 70’s, there were trade schools and certificate programs. Neither of my parents got a degree and did very well in life. My dad is a retired Chicago fireman and my mom retired from the US Treasury. Everyone didn’t go to college. We have to think about future markets and the way our world economy works. College isn’t necessary.

If they want to continue to put checks on us they will regardless of our education level. Respectfully, it is a personal choice some make but I don’t think is necessary for some career paths. Sometimes not playing the game and going against the traditional system is what can change your family tree !

I had to watch this episode with Troy Buckholdt. He is completely speaking my language. I completed high school in 1994 and I sat out for 2 years after. I realized that I needed a higher education. I enrolled in Grambling State University in 1996, completed one semester and got evicted the next semester because I couldn't get financial aid. I was crushed. That semester that I completed cost me $2300.00 that would linger on my credit for years. I finally paid it off. My point is college is not what's up. I had absolutely no direction given to me from the student aid staff. Fast forward to 2010, I again, realized or thought that I needed a degree. I wanted to be able to give my parents a vacation after my dad retired so I enrolled in University of Phoenix. I received an associate degree in arts with a concentration in Business in 2012. I learned so much in those 2 years. It inspired me to write a song, start a business, and for the first time, learn black history, which inspired a book. It was incredibly expensive and only worth it because of the knowledge that I acquired and the things that it has inspired me to do, but I never got a job in my field amid, many attempts. It was crushing. I felt discouraged and defeated all over again. I deferred my payments the entire time because I was not going to suffer monthly trying to pay back student loans on the salary that I was making, which was only about $17,000 a year. On May 16, 2023, I happened to check my credit Karma report and noticed that Transunion and Equifax reported that the U.S Dept of Education/Gl student loan decreased by $37,765 from $37,765 to 0. The account was closed. Hallelujah!!! Still looking to earn some serious money, I have been watching you Anthony for months now and I love your platform because debt has plagued me ever since I finished high school. I too am interested in building wealth and teaching my children about finances and all things important for them to be able to live free, to become entrepreneurs and start their own businesses and sharing the option to vocational training or tech training opposed to traditional college. I have goals like crazy and it take money to do everything. I am challenging myself for the remainder of this year. I enrolled in coursecareers on August 11. I am currently at 33% completion. I am venturing into customer success and I want to help advocate for a change in how people acquire skills and succeed in landing a career. I am so on board with advocating course careers, even more so when I complete it and land my first entry level job!! I am team Troy/coursecareers.

You didn’t say what field you majored in and how did you go fro owing 2k to 37k you have omitted some major points. No matter what you do you have to hustle. Humanities is a waste of time but many kids seem want to major in that to be educated. Parents need to be honest with their kids about which fields make money. This course seems good but we know when everyone gets into something the pay goes down so keep that in mind and chose carefully.

The college system surely is flawed. While I am not completely against the college system, it has big issues:
-Many people are having issues getting a career that matches their field of study even after graduating college, plus they have crazy expensive debt to pay off.
-Most of those college classes are a waste of time to do, many of them already taken for free in elementary/middle/high school.
-The classes one should take in college should only be ones that directly resonates with a student's career of choice...but many students take courses they have to repay with interest-accumulating debt, all which have nothing to do with helping them thrive in their career of course.

What I find is yes the college degree gets you in the door, you can interview well, but when it comes to choosing a candidate for a job sometimes they choose the other candidate stating they, “have more experience.” Especially in regions where black people are a minority.
I have been in group interviews where they say a candidate didn’t, “fit the culture.” Some places a weeding US out and using these key strategies.

I'm a 63-year-old married man that is totally debt-free. I did earn a college degree in Human Resource Management. The degree never helped me enter into the Human resource field. I thought because I had human resource experience in the U.S. Army it would help. However military jobs don't always match up to the civilian sector. I worked for a major cable company as a Business Customer Service Technician, AKA call center. Would Course Careers be worth doing for someone my age?

I went to college in 1990. I knew no other way to become a computer programmer at the time. Freshman year was mainly general classes for everyone. That was a waste of money. Sophomore year I started some tech classes. Looking back freshman year seemed to be a waste for what I was trying to do. I had an internship every summer in the IT department of an insurance company. I felt I was really learning what I wanted to do during my summer internships. I was offered a job by that company going into my senior year. My professors were good but learning from people doing the job was best for me. I was in that career for over 10 years until I decided to stay home with my kids. My son is brilliant. Very smart. That is not just my opinion. I heard this from his teachers. He graduated high school and works as a cook in a restaurant. He is not sure what he wants to do. He knows he does not want to go to a 4 year college and go into debt. He completed Dave Ramsey's online money course for high schoolers.

The cost is outrageous but the main problem with "college" is the wasted time and money on courses that have nothing to do with your job field... I went to trade school and every class (and 100% of the curriculum) was geared toward my job field. Even if you study for a certain field in college you're weighed down by classes you don't need and you're not half as prepared as you should of been even with a masters degree

The reason why people don't have the experience when they graduate is because most places don't offer a paid internship/externship to help pay off students pay off debt and give them the experience they need!! They expect them to do an unpaid internship/externship or volunteer for the experience. That may work for those who can do that, but most college students have families and that can't volunteer for experience.

I don’t think this show was advocating that everyone skip college. This path’s for tech sales, bookkeeping & HR for now. The guy said he’s working on expanding the fields and this is an excellent idea. Why waste 4 years in college with 100k plus in debt to be a bookkeeper when you can just train to be one in a couple of months for less than $500. It’s a great idea. Even college graduates can get value from the training, if having problems getting jobs.

    • @madonnanewman7244

No one has ever spent $100k on a degree in bookkeeping. Bookkeeping has always been offered as a certification or an associate degree at a community college. Also, you don't have to go $100k in student loan debt to obtain a degree. I have 2 college degrees & I got them for almost 90% free. @@oyamsbabe4028
