The idea he's driving a Fuel Altered in Bakersfield leaves Ron Capps sensing he's in the midst of a don't-pinch-me moment. The reality he could win the most prestigious of all old-school events, the Bakersfield March Meet, well that takes the thing to a whole another level.
Sunday at Auto Club Famoso Raceway, Capps made his dream a reality when he became one of the very few drag racers to win in three professional nitro categories.
Capps eased his way to the monumental victory, stopping the timers in 6.637 seconds, at only 158.93 when final round opponent Robert Winefsky turned on the red light.
"It's blowing my mind," Capps said, pausing to savor the moment. "It's the 62nd annual. It's crazy. I've been coming to this race ... I'm 54 years old; I've been coming here every year as a kid. Either my dad raced, or we came to watch. Came here too with Del Worsham in the Blue Max Funny Car, and then drove for Steve Plueger in the L.A. hooker, and came close to winning, but never did.
"And I think it was almost meant to be when this Fuel Altered class got started. My favorite race car of all time is a Fuel Altered, and to be able to win the March Meet, the 62nd annual, driving a AA/Fuel Altered, it doesn't get any better."
Ron obviously loves his fans, met him in Alaska, and Vegas! He actually remembers folks! Great guy!
Congrats on the win, Ron. Very happy for you after all of your previous efforts. AA/FA has always been my fave too. Named my last Husky-Malamute, Nanook. Not because of the Great White North either. Gasoline for washing parts, alcohol for drinking, but Nitro is for Racin'!
Holy Cow!!! You guys are coming up with some fantastic footage. And putting Ron's voice-over in during the back-up and staging is very cool. I really need to outfit my TV room with enormous speakers and something that shakes the place.

B&W tower speakers will do just fine. Trust me on that. My neighbors always enjoy hearing opera, Ducati’s, and Ferrari V12’s. The house shakes & the windows dance too.

Competition Plus must do the full coverage of the event next year !! A big production company could not do any better than the quality of footage we have had this year, simply amazing !!

sure is fun to watch and work on... Almost 20 years to when we lost Ron Fassl to a AA/FA crash.. Held the record at 5.31/286 for a bunch of years.... RIP sure are missed...

It's terrific to see a classic outline car like this one racing--and winning! The long-wheelbase funny car frames with wings are true race cars, but I'm in awe that Ron can get 'Good News' down the track so well.
I remember "WILD WILLIE BORCH" coming thru the lights at 220 waving the "V" sign steering one handed!
Gonmsd, I remember seeing the mob altered up on its left side at top end bring it down and pull the parachutes doing over 200 against the Texas ranger at Pomona winter nationals exhibition race in 1998! Also seeing Ricky Ruiz in the Nevada Rattler coming all the way up here to Alaska to race the forth fastest altered time ever, the Alaskan Grizzly! By the way, Capps came to Alaska. Ask him what he thought? We are almost at sea level, clean cool air and the most scenic background for a drag strip! Google Alaska raceway park!😉👍

Love the AA/FA cars. Should make them part of the NHRA show when PS's are not racing. Lot of respect for those pilots in that class.
