please dont eat milkweed thte monarchs are on endangered list and that is their host source. they need to b e planted more not eaten!!!
Thanks for the lesson!!! Suggetion,....dry your pods before you bread. Double dip in the egg and flour. The breading will stick more and you will get a crisper crust. Great video.

I get Lambs-quarter and purslane growing in my yard! It’s good to see this stuff on your channel. Vegetation often produces more food than a person can effectively hunt animals and get. At least that’s the case in this New Mexico desert! Love your videos!
I watched multiple videos on how to prepare them and just harvested and cooked some up tonight. About 30 minutes after eating I got extremely nauseated with cold flashes for hours. I looked it up and you’re supposed to boil the pods and change the water in the pot 3-4 times before sautéing or frying them, to insure the poisonous milk sap is able to be consumed safely. I’m not allergic to them, that’s just how it’s supposed to be done. Wanted to say something to possibly prevent someone else from getting mildly poisoned.

you may have Dogbane, looks like milkweed but makes you sick. Common milkweed is edible raw.

I’ve always boiled them changing the boiling water every two minutes through four times. Tastes like a cross between cabbage and asparagus. Love it.
Why change the boiling water?
When I was a kid my parents use to pick these off fences and bring them home to eat. They would throw them in a soup with some pork and when cooked they became very yummy greens to eat. Like you said you want to get them young when they're smooth on the outside!

You still have to be careful. Not all species are edible and the ones that are still need to be processed like this.
@@flamespear86 what is the worst that could happen? Could you die by getting the wrong species of milkweed or processing their pods differently? I thought the milk was poisonous enough to make people feel nauseous if they swallowed it.
@@IARRCSim I'm not a botanist but the worst I suppose would be an allergic reaction to the toxins, acute liver/kidney damage and death. That's what you should always assume when eating unknown plants and fungi. I suppose the least would be stomach aches, vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea.

I love this - it's great to see this get some attention - Free Food! My kids, every Spring would go out and gather the new blooms from the dandelions outside. I'd wash 'em up, use the egg and flour for batter, and fried up, they're GREAT! The first time I ever had some, I asked my mom, "Where did you get the mushrooms from?!" They taste a lot like morel mushrooms do, with an egg batter, fried. Maybe you could do a video on those - along with jewel weed, stinging nettles, and wild violets. Good food!

Not just American. Tempura and deep fried rice are popular in most of East Asia. A recent fad in Chinese street food vendors is to sell oiled and seasoned rocks for people to basically suck on and usually give back to the vendors for reuse. America is more unique in getting fat from unhealthy portions and lack of exercise, though.

You can do the same thing with yellow dandelion blooms. They taste a lot like fried morrel mushrooms. They are yummy, my mother in law used to make them a lot.
Nancy Barnett but those you can eat all the parts uncooked. the greens are better in my book especially when bacon grease is poured over them, some crushed red pepper/cayenne, splash of vinegar

Just what I was looking for! I cut them off anyway so the seeds don't go all over, they do plenty of root spreading! I started with 2 3 years ago, now there are at least 70 I mow around.
Thanks for sharing this. Awesome video. I get milkweed as an invasive in my blueberry and raspberry patches and pull it out often. Maybe I'll let an out-of-the-way patch grow to maturity and try cooking up a batch.

I love your videos! My wife and I tried this for the first time last night. We went to Fort Popham for a beach day and my wife noticed them when we were leaving. I said oh I have to try those. Brought them home did exactly what you did on the video and we were blown away on how good they were. Thanks for the video. I'm going out to pick a bunch more. Also was just wondering could I freeze these and keep them to eat for a later time?

I recall reading in a wild edibles book that there are 3 species of milk weed and only one is edible the others are poisonous.
Ah dang... I was gonna try them tomorrow.
I believe there's closer to 30 than 3. all suck raw(read it isn't impossible to wake up dead afterwards) the method here more or less handles that and you'll likely awaken only mostly dead at worst. peoples have eaten them for centuries, a custom not seen with foods where meal=a grave to dig

with respect, if you have flour and eggs, why would you eat milkweed?
Maybe it adds more variety of flavor than flour and eggs on their own. There is likely different vitamins and minerals in the milkweed pods too. It could stretch the eggs and flour you have out over more meals too while still getting you full. If you're carrying the ingredients for a long hike, you probably want to live off the land more so you don't need to carry such a heavy load of ingredients.

A dipping sauce would work with these I bet. I should see if I can find some milkweed near by, I never knew it was edible!
If you don't have eggs with you, you can dip the seed pods in a mixture of water and flour. It's kind of like tempura batter, but not as light.
The oil would still be important, right? I imagine the oil and deep frying would make it taste far more interesting than if it was simply boiled flour on those pods. I imagine the eggs would add a little protein but the oil would be the most critical for taste.

Cool!! i just picked a leaf off a milkweed plant to use in an art project and I wondered if the white liquid had any medicinal uses or if the pods or leaves were edible.I think it might be too late to eat the pods in early Nov.Thanks forthe info.I will try them next season.

I'm guessing his have had a bit of cultivating and tending to out in his mega acres back yard school ground he uses for survival and bushcraft training. Not that there is anything wrong with that, and it takes nothing away from the tutorial of foraging wild edibles if that's the case.

I discovered a plant, Milkweed Vine. The fruit from the vine looks the same as milkweed fruit. I do not think it is edible though, as every source I found thus far, says it is poison.
Look's delicious, maybe a little salt and pepper...I'm wondering what could substitute for the egg and flour in a sheer dire straight up bonified bug out shtf survival situation if you couldn't locate any wild bird eggs. You could stone grind seeds, acorns and other wild nuts aswell as some other types of plant lifes into a flour but what could you use to substitute for egg that would bind the flour to the pod's, maybe some rawhide glue would work. You got any ideas ?
Did you ever try the plant when it is about 6 inches tall? Greens in the early spring.

Can you be specific about the milk weeks genus and species. These look nothing like the ones we have in the southwest
Silkworm The one he shows in the video is Asclepias syriaca. But there are more than a dozen different species. I can’t tell you if they can all be prepared this way, but I do know all of them can be used by the Monarch butterflies 😉
J Kid thanks my wife has about a dozen milkweed plants in our garden to attract monarchs and all the pods look completely dried and have cotton like material coming out of them unlike what I'm seeing here
Silkworm Oh, that’s just because these pods are younger. They would turn brown and dry out if they stayed on the plant. Monarch Watch will give her great info if she needs any help. They list what conditions each species likes to live in.

Common & showy milkweeds are not nearly as toxic raw as people think. I haven’t eaten bowls full of common milkweed buds raw & dozens of young leaves without as much as a stomach ache, but everyone’s different. Boil shoots, buds to render completely safe. Pods don’t need boiling.

If you grow on your own land guess thatis your deal but if people take this from the wild it needs to be a law tp be A CRIME since it is an endangered list species host food plant
