- Excerpts from Robert Liberace's dvd "The Portrait in Terra Cotta" in which he teaches how to sculpt a portrait bust in terra cotta clay. Rob explains the importance of working in three dimensions to help the artist's eye in comprehending planes, muscle and bone formations. Materials, massing and finishing are explained in detail by this modern master with over twenty years of teaching experience.
Steve looks like he needs a hug, I hope you gave him one.

Great job and very realistic .
Hello Robert! You are an awesome inspiration and guide for someone like me! I am a beginner in sculpting and would like some advice on if there is a certain brand of terracotta that you would suggest ? I am also wondering if water based or oil based clays would be better for me to begin with? I do want to avoid cracking and much as possible! Thanks for anyone’s help in advance!
thank you so much for sharing !
The sculpture looks very good, but it would have been incredibly nice if this video had been a tutorial on how to do it step by step.
Nice job though 🙌🏻
Maestro!!!
Really quite wonderful, but i liked it best at the rougher two minute mark.
Cheerx
your model has such a charismatic face . he could be in movies
Lovely sir
Wow, thanks' for posting the video, subscribed
Impressive expressive
ahhh GOD ITS SO BEAUTIFUL ..
Muito treino e paciência! Incrível!
I liked just bc of Steve. I love Steve.
INCREDIBLE and WONDERFUL WORK!! BUT...Help! Here is the part I don't get... it's not possible to fire this then, right? Because of the wire inside?
How do you sculpt more
Once it’s dried won’t it be impossible to add new things cause they will falloff
thanks❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Excelente
Steve is a living painting...
Great 😍😍😍
Awesome!
nice video! i like it
How do you get the wire out if you want to fire such a thing
espectacular!!!
so i have always wondered what makes a work specify as terra cotta? is the finished sculpture fired or is this a clay that will hold up with just air drying?
Nice job
Someone gives Steve a hug ,if you don’t do it I do it
This was wonderful..What amount of time was taken from start to finish...3 hours with models break every 20 minutes? 6 hours ?
More!!
I like to imagine the bearded guy isn't the one being modeled, but instead he's just chilling there
I looked in your website that the demo comes in a dvd which ultimately requires to be shipped across, unlike some of your other demos which can be purchased and downloaded off the website, is there a way to purchase and download a demo of this without getting it in a dvd form?
thank you
Would like to see a bust made from built-up plaster (not cast)..
awesome
Does this get fired? Or does it air dry?
Cecelia Buser my oussy
Air dry it first to get the moisture out, and then fire
Does the firing goes with a wires?
Was a little sad to see the end of the raw look at 2:14 :( amazing though !
do you need to hollow it out?
Does this have to be baked?
👏👏👏👏
What is the clay used here? The name of it please.
OK, I kow zip about sculpture, How do you keep it from cracking?
I tried sculpting years ago, and it turned out to be one big cracked
mess.
@raikukororuhairu Pls do explain 🤔
WOW!
what clay do they use?
Hi Robert! I am in doubt about which clay is this? Terra Cotta clay? How can I find it?
hola buenas noches , me puedes dar la formula exacta de como hacer el barro ??? peso y medidas de las cantidades exactas ,,,, te queda como plastilina muy maleable ,,,
a mi no me sale ,, se me endurece o queda muy liquida ,,, gracias
😍
Wow
You called it a sketch, so that makes me think this didn't take a long time. How long did this take to make?
Show us how to make it
that momment when the portrait starts to blink
santa steve
interesting
"WOW"
1:36
Went from generic to beautiful in seconds ^_^
1:40 what happened
厉害👍
Steve, you quiet, noble son of a bitch.
what kind of clay is he using? Can anyone tell me? I wanna try it..
terra cotta it's in the tittle
It's water based clay, ceramic clay, if you will. It has to be fired or cast for permanence but ther3es really nothing like it for that paint-like ductility.
But terra cotta clay is red.
Becky Webb nope. It is like porcelain. It depends on the chemical consistency. It's all water clay.
Also. It looses about 15% when fired
👍👍👍👍😀🖑
good vid tho
And where is the terracotta's beard?
Step 1. Get some clay
Step 2. Make a fucking head
Sketch?.... More like final.
steve looks depressed
Emmmm...is this really teaching video? All the important step wad skip, I hopefully see the original video with step by step. Or how can I get this tutorial video?
Certainly. The dvds are at www.robertliberace.com.
Is Steve a bum you grabbed off the street?
on my way to order this valuable piece of work!.
