Two months before her death, Sinéad O Connor discovered "Hi Ren". On her twitter account. she posted the MV for "Hi Ren" three times, along with these three tweets: 1. Holy mother****in SHIT! Someone just showed me this at the weekend. This Archangel from like, twelfth heaven or somewhere, has only gone and made the entire history of songwriting and performing look like a three year old’s birthday party at Burger King. 2. Every song and or artist in history even Willie Dixon, Chuck Berry, The Beatles, NWA, Ice Cube, and even Bob Dylan, is officially relegated to class B. As are every actor in history or legend: living or dead, male or female. We all are now defunct. 3. It’s time to hit the welfare office: shoulda had that "thing to fall back on” like Brian May did. We’re f****d. Thanks be to God
Hi, Ren was my first exposure to Ren, and I spent about six months watching every reaction video about it that I could. I’ve probably heard it a hundred times, and I still get chills every time I hear it. I don’t agree with every reactor, but each reaction has added to my appreciation and understanding of this performance. That it resonates so strongly with so many people says a lot about Ren’s character as well as his artistry.
1000%.. i have watched 100s of Ren reaction HI Ren videos.. u CAN NEVER SEE SOMETHING FOR THE FIRST TIME, A 2ND TIME. So I LOVE watcging people see this for the first time.. So I can MAYBE RE-LIVE my FIRST TIME
This is the kind of artistry that gives "broken" people hope. Ren, through this performance piece, has become to a lot of people exactly what he stated in the song, "...the voice that you hear when you loosen the noose on the rope". So powerful, so impactful. Even the song structure itself is incredible. It starts off as a battle between his positive (Angel) and negative (Demon) aspects, the negative then makes an overpowering last ditch effort to reign supreme, tearing free and trying to take control, but ultimately fails as the final act, being the "God" aspect, emerges Triumphant, though still acknowledging and accepting that it will ALWAYS be a battle because we are all "a coin with 2 different sides". It's a beautifully cathartic and raw musical masterpiece. Ren is truly special. Welcome to the Ren rabbit-hole, it's a trip worth taking. This was the 4th take he did and yes, it was done live. Wait until you hear some of his other stuff, especially his storytelling ("The Tale of Jenny & Screech"). You haven't even touched the breadth of this young man's talent yet. The pig character (imo) represents the doctors and therapist who have essentially butchered him for years through their misdiagnosis. It's the system that focuses on peddling more pills than on genuinely trying to help to fix broken/ill people, caring more about profit than individual health. The bastardization of the hippocratic oath. He literally thought he was going insane because he was told repeatedly that the pain and symptoms he was experiencing were all in his head (psychosomatic). He had reached a point where he literally resigned himself to dying before he reached 30. Turns out he had Lyme's disease the whole time and it ran rampant through his system for 10 years, even to the point of causing brain damage. Ironically, if Ren hadn't gone through what he has, would he have ever made the art he has? There's no question that his suffering has shaped his music and now he's finally getting the recognition he undoubtedly deserves. I've said it before, I'll say it again, Ren is special.
I always took it … not as the “god side wins”, but that he finally accepts both the light and dark side of his humanity equally. Both are necessary. Both are, and will always be, part of him.
.Brief Ren bio: at 17 he contracted Lyme disease...was MIS-diagnosed with "mental" problems...given psychotropic meds that wrecked his physical and mental health...luckily, he received the correct diagnosis...has been in treatment for years and may be for life I think the Pig at that start represents Ren's feelings about some doctors and therapists.........the discordant vocals and guitar are symbols of Ren's inner turmoil & chaos, as do the wildly blinking lights ..........
Sense I found Ren he has made a huge change in my life, I can't get enough I hope you enjoy the world of Ren hope to see more!! you reactions are great. OO and I am not sure if you know this but most of his stuff is done in one take live he is amazing!!!!
You can hear the struggle in his voice, talking to his Dark side... always trying to stay strong. We love you Ren, thank you for you relatable story's and music - please share people
That was an excellent reaction, I’ve been a fan of Ren’s for some time (my daughter was in high school with him). Most of the reactors are good but with your psychology background you highlighted the importance of our inner demons and we’re not alone in this. Thank you, I look forward to watching many more of your reactions to come. Rich from Notth Wales 🏴 UK 🇬🇧
Hi, Rich! Thank you for your kind response! It's very neat that you got to know Ren as a young man in school and have been able to see him grow. We appreciate you sharing that tidbit with us and we'll happily keep sharing our reactions with you, too! 😊
First time i watched this i had a panic attack but thought i needed to watch it again so i watched someone reacting to it that was the best thing i could do i have watched many times since. One thing i think about this song is it needs to be seen by every one even in schools after a certain age, because how many children kill themselves because of the negativity towards them from nasty comments and bullying to them believing what is said. I went through bullying all through school to the point i attempted suicide twice, I am a recovering alcoholic 11 years clean I turned 58 and suffer PTSD and other health issues so the majority of bad days over good is high, if this bullying had been dealt with i may have had a reasonable life not the existence i have to deal with now
I've been obsessed with Ren for awhile now. Songs like Hi Ren, Sick Boi and Seven Sins touch a nerve that few songs have. I do not like rap at all but the fact Ren can break through that barrier says a lot. I have a disability and chronic pain. Like Ren I was misdiagnosed for years. Two years ago I got finally correctedly diagnosed and while there is no cure I finally have a name for it. I have constant chronic pain. I've learned to deal with it but even my husband didn't understand what it feels like but Ren does understand. The first time I heard his music I felt heard. I actually cried because I wasn't the only one. Ren speaks for those who don't have the ability to speak their truth.
Sending you love. Reading your story sounds a lot like mine. I’m so glad you got a diagnosis because I have found that validation is HUGE when you spend years and years looking to fix yourself. I also have a chronic pain issue they can’t figure out. It’s beyond frustrating for sure. 💗🙏🏼💗
@@StephanieEMT16 it actually ended up being an issue with my lungs. I have to use a noninvasive ventilator at night while I sleep. I also have to be very careful to not get any illness that could affect my lungs.
Yes, that's really cool, and Ren spent 200 pounds on this video and got thrown out of this basement after only four takes, but the shadow thing is an accident. Ren and Sam are both geniuses, but I'm really sick of people seeing things in the shadows. It's an accident. A happy, happy accident, that doesn't take anything away from the TRUE GENIUS of these 2 artists. And if you've heard EITHER of them in the VOLUMINOUS interviews they've both done about this video, say anything about planning the shadows, I will EAT MY HAT!!! I'm a film maker. You know what's brilliant that no one ever comments on, and that ABSOLUTELY IS INTENTIONAL??? The "flares" from the key lights when Ren stands up at the end, making him look like a saint. Flares are almost NEVER allowed in a finished product. Literally millions of dollars have been spent by movie makers to reshoot when flares arise. THESE ARE USED INTENTIONALLY, and KUDOS to Sam and Ren for realizing their powerful addition to the visuals of this masterpiece. Shadows??? Terrific and completely unintentional.
This is one of those landmark songs/performances that stop you in your tracks... and coming from us oldies, that's saying something. He's said himself that his illness has given breadth & depth to his insightful storytelling that probably would have otherwise been missing. His inner self critic is so savage - who else knows your truest inner motives & ambitions better than yourself despite all the tropes & clichés and can so devastatingly destroy you right to your very foundations. The gloves are off! I think the first falsetto vocalising is so tentative, like a mouse peeking out, which seems to draw out his alter ego, but when he reprises the falsetto he is so much more confident/assured, looking like he has integrated his dark/light sides into a whole person - the lighting & video seems to support this idea, IMO. And that final monologue... the songs gets better each time you hear because you spot something else or a new interpretation of what you previously thought - it's that good. His biblical imagery is very strong which IIUC, is a product of his upbringing rather than deeply held beliefs - he got to a point of such despair during his illness that he would have prayed or used voodoo or whatever the hell would give him some relief. He wrote this as he was coming to terms medically, physically & psychologically on the long road to recovery - check out 'Crutch' which he wrote back when he was at a really low ebb - his awareness of the impact his illness had on those around him really hits home.
One of my favorite relatable poems is by Sarah Boswell. And you're quite right about it being hard to trust in that silence or the reprieves that we are given. They seem to never last. The poem: My demons, though quiet, are never quite silenced. Calm as they may be, they wait patiently for a reason to wake, take an overdue breath, and crawl back to my ear.
Loved your reaction. Absolutely. Keep it up! There's a big need for a professional like you here. On a personal note, this "Hi Ren" video gave me a wonderful "tool" to use when I engage with my inner critic. In the dialog after the song. When he says: "Relax" Saved the 58-yr-old Big Time! Cheers
I’ve never been able to really resonate with an artist so much I’ve fought almost all my life battles that I should have never had to fight and now growing up it has changed into fighting those same battles in my head thank you ren.
Thank you for getting to know Ren a little more and his music Also for listening to people's comments and feelings I have found that many visits to this song can bring up new and different personal revelations We seldom get to know one another at our first meeting Also mistakes are often the best teachers of course Respect your reaction greatly
Thank you for subscribing! We love having new subscribers from all around the world. It gives us such wonderful chances to learn and grow from you! Welcome to the Delightfully Dysfunctional family!
Hi Ren was my first like so many others. I feel like a teenager when I say that I feel like his music has helped me cope with my own struggles with a debilitating, chronic illness (gasteoparesis and Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome caused by covid damaging my vagus nerve) and mental health issues (bipolar II). His music made me feel not alone.
Thank you for the great reactions and insights. More importantly, thank you for channel's positive mission and vision. I hope others pick up on your positivity and spread it.
I find it a very powerful indicator seeing so many mental health professionals that react to this and how they LOVE the way Ren describes the journey in dealing with mental health issues as a pendulum and a dance. We've come so far from how well being and treatment used to be viewed.
I agree with you in that we all deal with this. While some have it in more extreme instances than other and it comes in different manners. With myself it is more intrusive/destructive thoughts. Thankfully, I can usually recognize them for what they are and pass through. However, in times of depression (something else we all deal with to some level) I may fall victim to the thoughts and say or do something that affects others or myself negatively. I like his reference to these mood swings as a pendulum and learn to relax and deal with them. While not the biggest fan of the song itself, I do appreciate his honesty and willingness to lay himself bare for his art. That is courageous, especially in today's somewhat narcissistic society. While I would never just listen to this, I do appreciate and enjoy the performance.
When I first heard this song, I was not keen on the twangy discordant notes, not the "hoo hoo hoo" vocals. But now, they're my favorite part of the whole performance. Well, since I have come to like the entire thing from start to finish, perhaps it is more accurate to say I have come to appreciate those parts more. The "hoo hoo hoo" at the start has that nice gentle "medieval" rhythm, like the steady trot of a horse in the countryside, and then the reprise at the end has the more upbeat strumming, almost like a celebratory victory - the contrast is remarkable. There's almost a "movie" element to this, in the way Ren tells the story, plays out these parts of his psyche like characters within that story, and the music provides all the ambiance to set the scenes - from calm moments to chaotic ones. Quite the ride.
I think the genius of this song is that it captures the primordial duality of the human condition. And that is why pretty much everyone and anyone, regardless of what walk of life we come from, where we are born, what our social status or work status are, our ailments, sufferings or blessings are, we can all relate at some level to this. And that is something truly masterful to pull off. To me this is not only music, it is a masterpiece of art that goes beyond the standard limitations of genres. I think the psychological field could use this piece of art as part of psychological treatments or therapy. Because it might be able to reach a struggling person beyond what a they might allow their therapist or psychologist to see or know. Maybe it pierces that armor and helps them., but i can also see a risk with it. I think it's worth the risk as someone who has lived with severe depression for 40 years now, i know what he talk about very well. No one has ever captured it so perfectly as Ren did in this.
Thanks for your reaction to Ren. Please react to DAX as well. And if you like guitar players, you need to react to Alipbata, fingerstyle guitarist. You'll be blown away.
Inner dialog is so annoying but in the same sense. i don't think i would like the quiet either. Great reaction to REN. Try chalk outlines or crutch suc!de is also a great song.
I am 43 and I know first hand what Ren is talking about, as I have Personality "A" type disorder and Dysthymic disorder on top of being born with Dyslexia \o/ but no matter what I AM still here and I AM fighting the good fight in the name of all that is good in this world. For those who are suffering it can and will get better you just gotta keep faith and hope in your heart and life. Everything else after that will just fall into place :)) in the infamous words of Bill & Ted "Be well to each other" and PARTY ON DUDES \o/ :)) lol sorry I just had to.
In O N E Sentence : " " . . . A Loneliness Epidemic . . . t h e n . . . . . . Dear Human I Am Sending Out A Hug To You . . . " " --- A Kind Thing To Say . - Charles Bukowski -- " " Be Kind " " .
What alot of people don't know is alot of songs ren does are live recorded and as a 1 take. With this video the audio was done live and 1 take he had 4 chances to record the video and the video aspect of it is sliced over the 4 attempts he had
So true it’s almost disappointing when you see it’s not their first time hearing it because you are here to get a little bit of the feeling back when you yourself heared it for the first time 😂😂😂😂
Ren has done some amazing interviews. Just knowing his story, second hand, doesn't compare to hearing it from him. I'd suggest skipping the "Tales of Jenny & Screech" and going to "Seven Sins." SS is another deep dive into his physical/psychological journey. Ren has many issues he's passionate about, and he covers them all beautifully. Just for fun, you should treat yourself to one of his inspiring messages, even if you don't do a reaction to it. "Losing It" is a banger cover of Fishers EDM track, and it alone features his immense talent as well as a phenomenal video.
How to connect to me is I have what I call an angry me and I have separated myself from this other feeling to being another entity supposedly there are ways I feel like it controls me but I don't control it now let me clarify I don't actually think there's another entity in me I just think I don't have control over emotion
So funny that there's this one characteristic that he does. I've watched the video thousands of times lol. Not really but I'm watching a lot and a lot of reactions especially but especially with the reviews and stuff for the most part I like them. I'm going to give you a thumbs up, but everyone seems to notice that when he goes to the evil Ren that when he's evil Ren the lights flicker but when he's angel ran positive he constantly turns to the left like he's fighting to keep his face right
Thank you, I have enjoyed your Ren music reactions. I would like to recommend that you also react to Falling In Reverse - "Last Resort (Reimagined)" also and ideally if you would consider not listening to it in advance and recording your first time 'live' reaction to it. You can always tack on a well considered reaction to it at the end to get the best of both worlds. This would also serve to enhance the shared experience of reacting to the video together without too much erudite educational exposition in the middle of the song but still having it at the end so that you can still give us the best of both your honest first time reactions and your considered insights also, keep doing what you are doing it is much appreciated.
She did another live reaction to Hi Ren prior to this, since deleted. She talked over the video and got some feedback about pausing. (I didn't think the talking was horrible, the interjections were interesting. But she did miss a bunch of the song.) I'm guessing the "feedback" got to be too much so we have this redo.
my connection to this song is only the similarity of struggle,, i'm undiagnosed autistic and have struggled with being a bit weird my whole life i had to start my own business because i had problems holding a job with sleep disorders and high ethics.. but managed to stay in business the last 40 years without needing to advertise or even carry a card, i run a lawn and tree service, a 1st responder thru 40 years of hurricanes in fla ,and do all phases of construction and kind of an inventor on the side, after six years of development i figured out a disaster response product that could help millions worldwide .. then my insurance agent forgot to post a payment back in 2020 and the state took everything i worked the last 40 years for away .. stuck at home like a prisoner i came online and saw people helping others so i started making videos explaining what i was. trying to do to get help, and found out if the platform your uploading to doesn't promote you your just talking to your phone, and then i see stuff like this and get jealous because i will never write a song that gets peoples attn like this. so my chances of bringing my ideas to the world are fading. and it's scary as hell to think of all that could be, but it may all be lost because one person forgot to hit enter on there keyboard.. and my chances of succeeding alone are close to those of getting out of quicksand alone..
since this is a conversation between parts of himself, is the negative part of him actually demonic or just his perception of it. which part is truly him? the demonic? the passive, or the 3rd part identifying himself as Hope? the last guitar solo is deep because it seems to be a combination of all three personalities and their corresponding guitar styles.
Just curious if you have the time, I guess. I need to know how much you charged by the hour question mark because well, you know a lot of us have this inner fight all the time, and we can't get it out of our head. And we can't get any sleep. And I know sooner or later lack of sleep will kill me. So just had a curiosity how much per hour l o l
And right at the very end when he's starting to go. And he's yodeling again. The lights are going crazy but he can't stop from looking left. So at the beginning he was turned right yodeling and starting his serenation. But when he finishes or he's getting ready to close the difference is that the room's not bright anymore and the lights keep flashing and then he starts going you you you as a yodels. It's like he started from the light and he went to the flashing lights into the darkness and then when he stops. See I'm I'm no doctor but I'm pretty sure I got this figured out. I got some degrees but nobody ever answers and doesn't seem like you have too many messages on your channel right now so hopefully understand and might give me your thoughts on it. I thumbed up and I subscribed right away
Your body language and facial expressions lead me to believe this is not a reaction to your first time hearing this song. I’m no sky-entist, but I don’t believe it’s your first time. I’m moving on to the next hopefully honest person. Good luck to you.
Like you said, think of it. Logically, the left side when he turns left is the devil on his left hand shoulder on the right tries not to turn left but he keeps twitching so he's stuck in between. So he's the angel on the right hand shoulder and as his head turns it's in his mind. Which side do I pick? I don't know. I'm just a homeless guy from Canada who just got a place. Luckily after two and a half years living in a cartoon I'm just a hobo but I'm pretty sure that's the actual analysis but I ain't no doctor. I ain't got no credits to my name but that's my opinion. No one ever answers to it anyways but it's it's the devil and the angel and which side do you choose
Yeah so funny. The left side is the devil on his shoulder. The right side is the angel on his shoulder and he's confused and that's why he's telling each person's story. Conflicting because he's confused, but when he's left he's more determined and confident. But when he's on the right hand side he keeps twitching his head to the left like he still wants to go there. But he's trying not to rewatch the video. Tell me I'm wrong
the critical voice dissapears when taking the medicines, and it will destroy you as much as listening to the easy voice ( I refuse to call it 'good' voice.)
Half Japanese, half German, born in AK, grew up on a bison farm in MN. I think my parents wanted to confuse everyone I meet and gave me a Hawaiian name 🙃 Makes for a good ice breaker when someone asks though 🙃
This song is the most important song I've heard in many years. Nothing I've heard or seen in a very long time has impacted me as much as this.

Your summary is the most concise and accurate one that I have come across. Absolutely brilliant 👍
I'd love to see, Chalk Outlines (live) please.
One of my favorite relatable poems is by Sarah Boswell. And you're quite right about it being hard to trust in that silence or the reprieves that we are given. They seem to never last. The poem:
My demons, though quiet, are never quite silenced.
Calm as they may be, they wait patiently for a reason to wake, take an overdue breath, and crawl back to my ear.
Thank you for sharing that poem, it captures a complicated part of healing.
Loved your reaction. Absolutely. Keep it up! There's a big need for a professional like you here.
On a personal note, this "Hi Ren" video gave me a wonderful "tool" to use when I engage with my inner critic. In the dialog after the song. When he says: "Relax"
Saved the 58-yr-old Big Time!
Cheers
I’ve never been able to really resonate with an artist so much I’ve fought almost all my life battles that I should have never had to fight and now growing up it has changed into fighting those same battles in my head thank you ren.
Thank you for getting to know Ren a little more and his music
Also for listening to people's comments and feelings
I have found that many visits to this song can bring up new and different personal revelations
We seldom get to know one another at our first meeting
Also mistakes are often the best teachers of course

Your comment is the best short summary of Ren and this work of art that I have come across. Absolutely brilliant 👍
It brings the tears.
Thank you for the great reactions and insights. More importantly, thank you for channel's positive mission and vision. I hope others pick up on your positivity and spread it.
I love how Ren become more frantic as he duels with his inner critic.
I find it a very powerful indicator seeing so many mental health professionals that react to this and how they LOVE the way Ren describes the journey in dealing with mental health issues as a pendulum and a dance. We've come so far from how well being and treatment used to be viewed.
I cry every time I hear this song it’s my life in a song
More Ren reactions!
Beautiful - love you and your partner in crime. Please continue. Ren is a fearless force of nature.
My take away is either you stay a victim or you become a student and learn to dance ❤
I don't know what Art is but this is it
Great reaction. Subbed for more Ren.
You might like Chalk outlines, the live version.
Thank you!! 😊
Subbing! Here for your Ren journey, there lots more! Money Game 3 showes his piano and acting skills!!!
This is the 3rd of a live talk all in one take for the hole video with no cuts!
This is like when Gollum/Smegol (LORD OF THE RINGS) had a conversation. It goes deeper than what's on the surface. It's a battle of good vs. evil.
Your Amazing Thanks For The Love And Support ❤
Thanks for your reaction to Ren. Please react to DAX as well. And if you like guitar players, you need to react to Alipbata, fingerstyle guitarist. You'll be blown away.

Welcom to the family
The flipped reverse tones are the best. Hard to play so well.
I Love your guys' insights and reactions. I would love to see you guys watch and react to Ren's Money Game series. It is powerful!

And more!!

What alot of people don't know is alot of songs ren does are live recorded and as a 1 take. With this video the audio was done live and 1 take he had 4 chances to record the video and the video aspect of it is sliced over the 4 attempts he had
Not really a reaction when you are singing along with the words, Its a review
So true it’s almost disappointing when you see it’s not their first time hearing it because you are here to get a little bit of the feeling back when you yourself heared it for the first time 😂😂😂😂
100% not first time reaction.
One of Rens best friends unfortunately committed suicide. That the reference to the victim and students line.
Excellent...thank you..
I put the "fun" in dysfunctional.
But she did miss a bunch of the song.) I'm guessing the "feedback" got to be too much so we have this redo.
my connection to this song is only the similarity of struggle,,
i'm undiagnosed autistic and have struggled with being a bit weird my whole life i had to start my own business because i had problems holding a job with sleep disorders and high ethics.. but managed to stay in business the last 40 years without needing to advertise or even carry a card, i run a lawn and tree service, a 1st responder thru 40 years of hurricanes in fla ,and do all phases of construction and kind of an inventor on the side, after six years of development i figured out a disaster response product that could help millions worldwide .. then my insurance agent forgot to post a payment back in 2020 and the state took everything i worked the last 40 years for away .. stuck at home like a prisoner i came online and saw people helping others so i started making videos explaining what i was. trying to do to get help, and found out if the platform your uploading to doesn't promote you your just talking to your phone, and then i see stuff like this and get jealous because i will never write a song that gets peoples attn like this. so my chances of bringing my ideas to the world are fading. and it's scary as hell to think of all that could be, but it may all be lost because one person forgot to hit enter on there keyboard.. and my chances of succeeding alone are close to those of getting out of quicksand alone..
I felt cheated when you sang along.
👍👍👍
Hi! New sub here. Can't wait for the ride.
since this is a conversation between parts of himself, is the negative part of him actually demonic or just his perception of it. which part is truly him? the demonic? the passive, or the 3rd part identifying himself as Hope? the last guitar solo is deep because it seems to be a combination of all three personalities and their corresponding guitar styles.
Ren brought me here
on at least 2 parts of the video, I saw you singing along with him, are you reading the lyrics, or have you seen this before ?
First time seeing that for ya was it? 😂
Fake, orchestrated "reaction" videos. Perfect sign of the times we live in.
Wait not everyone has a voice in their head like this? Holy crap I thought everyone did.
Reaction...and knows the lyrics already....
A musician on another channel said that "bad" Ren is in a minor key and "good" Ren is in a major key
You heard this before but still nice reaction
Ren is ewrythng 🪄🎼✨💯
🤘😊👍💙🇫🇮
My new year's resolution was watch less Ren reactions...
Lol, how's it going 😂😂😂
Yeah, I failed too! 😂
It is a serious addiction!
I really hate these reactions when they stop half way through just listen all the way through let us see your face then in the end then react x
We are human beings. 30 billion before us. WE ARE HUMAN! 80 Billion before us. 60 Billion. Sorry but real "jump into the live off grid is real"
You from Hawaii?
Half Japanese, half German, born in AK, grew up on a bison farm in MN. I think my parents wanted to confuse everyone I meet and gave me a Hawaiian name 🙃
Makes for a good ice breaker when someone asks though 🙃
It has become very profitable for musicians to sing about their ''mental health'' issues and struggles these days...
If only being a cynic was more appreciated by the market, you'd be set!
@@ashebanow If only being a denier was more appreciated by the market, you'd be set!
Be aware with Ren that some of his music is from that dark side that took over. It can be jarring
So obviously you’ve listened before pathetic reaction 🙈
You're not reacting to a sing you know so well that you can sing along to it.
This is a review, not a reaction, beware.
