Every Eritrean should know why Eritreans are suffering from the likes of psycho esayas and his supporters of the same sick identity crisis victims. Especially those in diaspora enjoying democracy and institutional systems and do not want that to happen to their own country
Well Mesfin Woldemariam exemplifies some Amhara intellectual’s stance and their bigotry against Eritreans. What is of paramount interest here is Esayas’ character and perhaps even his commitment to Eritrean independence. Also, what is of consequence is that if what Mesfin depicted in a conversation with Esayas is accurate, then it brings into question Esayas’ commitment to Eritrean independence and welfare during that crucial period in 1991 London meeting to formalize Eritrean's separation from Ethiopia. It also shows Esayas' ignorance as well, since the interchange was so impolite, self-aggrandizing, incomprehensible, silly and some of the elements of the discussion required a bit of knowledge. If true, it shows how Esayas is not only unsophisticated. but also that he is out of his depth, since he is barely educated about historical matters to make an analysis about Napier/Magdala expedition; or perhaps it is a syndrome of what they call 'little knowledge is dangerous'. But of course, two years ago, after we heard Esayas declaring in broad daylight what he thought about Eritrean independence and sovereignty, all Eritreans know now what his real beliefs were and that he has no substance as a leader let alone as a person. Then, it was clear that ‘the emperor has no clothes,’ and/or he is also an empty suit. What an embarrassing sight that was. Given that Esayas has been in power for over 2 decades ruling over a preciously achieved newly independent Eritrea, we have to do a thorough analysis about who Esayas is-his character and real intentions. This is so important as in some respect it reveals some aspect of us-Eritreans. For example, how was it that those Eritreans who spent their lives with Esayas never took into account who this man was and his beliefs? How was it that his comrades never questioned his behavior and actions early on and felt that it was their patriotic duty to either expose him or remove him from position of power? Some say, they knew his ‘bahiryatu’; how was it then that they did not figure out a way to let like-minded people know and put up a united resistance? Even now, how is that some people who are in diaspora that knew him intimately are so reticent and do not speak out or write about this in a very diligent and systematic way for the sake of history? There are many questions one can pose. For example, just from the limited observation about Esayas’ behavior and actions, his character betrays his lumpen type of upbringing and urban lower-class boorish behavior; it also partially explains how he conducts himself as a leader. He may be clever and shrewd, but he also does not have much skills or intellectual ability; no wonder he has resents and rejects Eritreans who are more skillful, knowledgeable and intellectual than him. One could say that’s the way most dictators are-insecure, cruel, crude, but know how to manipulate people. Knowing fully his socialization and his character adds some dimension to understanding who this person is. Going back to Mr. Mesfin, it is very clear for those of us who know Amhara chauvinism and their proclivities that he was just trying to humor Esayas and see if he can fold. And of course, it appears that Esayas seemed to have folded, as they say, ‘like a cheap suit'. That exchange about Somalia/Magdala is laughable, if not pitiful. But any Amhara, let alone an educated one, is very skillful at trying to draw out an adversary and expose the weaknesses. This kind of psychological petty drama is well known by Eritreans, who lived for a long time among these people. You know, chauvinist Amharas have all kinds of denigrating comments and slurs about other ethnic groups. They say about Eritreans: ‘Tigre inna geleba eyadere eKlal’. When we were kids we used to fight any stupid Amhara who dares utter this statement. But, it seems perhaps people like Esayas may fit this stereotype (that’s what this writer thought when 2 years ago in that peace spectacle with Abiy, Esayas was beating his chest excitedly, genuflecting and giving foolish speeches. There was one image of sly a smile on Abiy's face and sheer joy among his entourage as they watched Esayas giddily ‘putting his foot in his mouth’. Some Ethiopians thought two decades of bitter defeat by heroic Eritreans was overturned instantly! That portrait is so revealing and priceless), when Esayas demeaned himself, not the noble Eritrean people. That pathetic event brought the deep feeling to let this scoundrel be an Ethiopian if he wants, as no self-respecting true son or daughter of Eritrea will say and do what he did then. So, perhaps the Amhara'a slur fits Esayas perfectly now. Besides, like all oppressed people, there will always be some people like him who are self absorbed or have an internalized image of their oppressors and emulate them to self-denigrate or oppress others. These are people who have not truly liberated themselves, even after struggling against their oppressors. On the other hand, Mesfin, was well-known for his Amhara nefTigna worldview; he believes in the superiority (fake assimilationists' view) of his ethnicity. Before that historic London meeting to formalize the end of 30 years’ war in 1991, he went to testify in front of the US congress to plead his case to the US administration against 'granting' Eritrea its sovereignty. Mesfin used to target bright Eritrean students at Haile Selassie University and give them failing grades in his classes. He is also a showboat who loves to brag and draw attention to himself, like some educated Habasha. Contrary to all the hoopla, he is not the most respected intellectual of Ethiopia. And this story he tells is all idle talk; and finally it is, as they say, mind over matter. Most Amharas believe in individual leaders (strongman). They also don't contemplate (or want to deny) that Eritreans en masse rose up to fight Ethiopia, but rather that they would like to believe that Eritreans were led by individuals like Esayas. By in large, they choose not to know much about Eritrean revolution and even much less contemplate about Eritreans’ victory; and, there is also this delusion of grandeur they have about their imperial interest. Besides, let alone Esayas, who came from nowhere, they had not embraced eminent Eritreans who decades prior genuinely supported and built Ethiopian feudal empire. It is clear Mesfins smugness in this interaction. He was depicting Esayas as a lightweight and that he dared talk down to Esayas like so.. At last, if Ethiopians want Esu, they can have him free of charge. We have noble Eritreans who love their country and will be happy to be rid of him from amongst us anyway. Let him go to Gondar, Tigrai, Hawassa or wherever. By his actions and his statements he has forfeited his place among Eritrean patriots and statesmen. He will be remembered only as one who brought so much destruction, misery, and cruelty on Eritrean people. I believe, that we should not even give any mind to these kinds of stories henceforth,, but let’s focus on getting our country back from this brutal regime. Also, it would be useful to understand who Esayas is, what he represents, and how he came to be. We must do a very deep analysis and interview people who intimately knew him and worked with him, in order to have an accurate picture, and for our historical record. It would also be useful for Eritreans to learn from this experience, so that we not repeat such an aberration. Eritreans continue to pay big price for our misstep of putting Esayas at the helm of our country. We should exercise ample precaution against such kind of leader and establish a rule of law to create checks and balances.
This is not a surprise to us Eritreans. We knew his identity and his intentions. The problem is some of us won't believe what we hear and see. For two years he is doing everything to undermine our sovereignty intentionally forcing our people specially our youth to leave their country. His hope is we surrender to ethiopia without resistance. We are trying to fight him back. So far it is not good enough. We need unity, resolve, tolerance and leadership. God bless Eritrea!!!!

For example, how was it that those Eritreans who spent their lives with Esayas never took into account who this man was and his beliefs? How was it that his comrades never questioned his behavior and actions early on and felt that it was their patriotic duty to either expose him or remove him from position of power? Some say, they knew his ‘bahiryatu’; how was it then that they did not figure out a way to let like-minded people know and put up a united resistance? Even now, how is that some people who are in diaspora that knew him intimately are so reticent and do not speak out or write about this in a very diligent and systematic way for the sake of history? There are many questions one can pose. For example, just from the limited observation about Esayas’ behavior and actions, his character betrays his lumpen type of upbringing and urban lower-class boorish behavior; it also partially explains how he conducts himself as a leader. He may be clever and shrewd, but he also does not have much skills or intellectual ability; no wonder he has resents and rejects Eritreans who are more skillful, knowledgeable and intellectual than him. One could say that’s the way most dictators are-insecure, cruel, crude, but know how to manipulate people. Knowing fully his socialization and his character adds some dimension to understanding who this person is.
Going back to Mr. Mesfin, it is very clear for those of us who know Amhara chauvinism and their proclivities that he was just trying to humor Esayas and see if he can fold. And of course, it appears that Esayas seemed to have folded, as they say, ‘like a cheap suit'. That exchange about Somalia/Magdala is laughable, if not pitiful. But any Amhara, let alone an educated one, is very skillful at trying to draw out an adversary and expose the weaknesses. This kind of psychological petty drama is well known by Eritreans, who lived for a long time among these people. You know, chauvinist Amharas have all kinds of denigrating comments and slurs about other ethnic groups. They say about Eritreans: ‘Tigre inna geleba eyadere eKlal’. When we were kids we used to fight any stupid Amhara who dares utter this statement. But, it seems perhaps people like Esayas may fit this stereotype (that’s what this writer thought when 2 years ago in that peace spectacle with Abiy, Esayas was beating his chest excitedly, genuflecting and giving foolish speeches. There was one image of sly a smile on Abiy's face and sheer joy among his entourage as they watched Esayas giddily ‘putting his foot in his mouth’. Some Ethiopians thought two decades of bitter defeat by heroic Eritreans was overturned instantly! That portrait is so revealing and priceless), when Esayas demeaned himself, not the noble Eritrean people. That pathetic event brought the deep feeling to let this scoundrel be an Ethiopian if he wants, as no self-respecting true son or daughter of Eritrea will say and do what he did then. So, perhaps the Amhara'a slur fits Esayas perfectly now. Besides, like all oppressed people, there will always be some people like him who are self absorbed or have an internalized image of their oppressors and emulate them to self-denigrate or oppress others. These are people who have not truly liberated themselves, even after struggling against their oppressors.
On the other hand, Mesfin, was well-known for his Amhara nefTigna worldview; he believes in the superiority (fake assimilationists' view) of his ethnicity. Before that historic London meeting to formalize the end of 30 years’ war in 1991, he went to testify in front of the US congress to plead his case to the US administration against 'granting' Eritrea its sovereignty. Mesfin used to target bright Eritrean students at Haile Selassie University and give them failing grades in his classes. He is also a showboat who loves to brag and draw attention to himself, like some educated Habasha. Contrary to all the hoopla, he is not the most respected intellectual of Ethiopia. And this story he tells is all idle talk; and finally it is, as they say, mind over matter. Most Amharas believe in individual leaders (strongman). They also don't contemplate (or want to deny) that Eritreans en masse rose up to fight Ethiopia, but rather that they would like to believe that Eritreans were led by individuals like Esayas. By in large, they choose not to know much about Eritrean revolution and even much less contemplate about Eritreans’ victory; and, there is also this delusion of grandeur they have about their imperial interest. Besides, let alone Esayas, who came from nowhere, they had not embraced eminent Eritreans who decades prior genuinely supported and built Ethiopian feudal empire. It is clear Mesfins smugness in this interaction. He was depicting Esayas as a lightweight and that he dared talk down to Esayas like so..
At last, if Ethiopians want Esu, they can have him free of charge. We have noble Eritreans who love their country and will be happy to be rid of him from amongst us anyway. Let him go to Gondar, Tigrai, Hawassa or wherever. By his actions and his statements he has forfeited his place among Eritrean patriots and statesmen. He will be remembered only as one who brought so much destruction, misery, and cruelty on Eritrean people. I believe, that we should not even give any mind to these kinds of stories henceforth,, but let’s focus on getting our country back from this brutal regime. Also, it would be useful to understand who Esayas is, what he represents, and how he came to be. We must do a very deep analysis and interview people who intimately knew him and worked with him, in order to have an accurate picture, and for our historical record. It would also be useful for Eritreans to learn from this experience, so that we not repeat such an aberration. Eritreans continue to pay big price for our misstep of putting Esayas at the helm of our country. We should exercise ample precaution against such kind of leader and establish a rule of law to create checks and balances.
This is not a surprise to
us Eritreans. We knew his identity and his intentions. The problem is some of us
won't believe what we
hear and see. For two years he is doing
everything to undermine our sovereignty intentionally forcing
our people specially our youth to leave their country. His hope
is we surrender to ethiopia
without resistance.
We are trying to fight him back. So far it is not good enough.
We need unity, resolve,
tolerance and leadership.
