I'm a big Gillan and Whitesnake fan. In October I will see Deep Purple live again for the 12th time. But this is the best DP vocal live show I have ever seen. Joe Lynn Turner gives this band the sound a band of this caliber deserves. Amazing band here.
I was there too! JLT invited some of the Hell's Angels to the show as guests (& mentioned it to the audience during the performance) because at that time, JLT lived down the block from the Hell's Angels Clubhouse, in NYC. That Deep Purple album, band lineup & show at Radio City were fantastic! I bought (& still have) the band picture book from the concert. JLT signed it for me a few years ago, during his solo tour. Besides being a great singer, he's really cool to his fans. Every time I meet him, he signs whatever I bring!
@@grobbler1 I'm not sure. I thought that once he revealed his baldness to the world, he wouldn't backtrack to wigs again. It would defeat the purpose. I thought his bold new look on the latest album would be permanent, except for maybe a hat or bandana. I honestly haven't seen any other recent photos of Joe.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful show. This is definitely has a Rainbow vibe with Joe on vocals!! It's nice to see the Deep Purple guys together again, I'm still amazed that Ian Paice is still the only drummer this band has ever had 🤯
I think it is so interesting that Blackmore never worked with Turner again. The vocal melodies that he added to Purple’s music were unique to this period. And Blackmore loves this album. Even though, to this day, he has not played any of the songs from it outside of this era. Blackmore even pushed Turner to release some of the songs intended for the follow up that Gillan changed for The Battle Rages On.
When he did the shows under the Rainbow name in 2017 he said he wanted someone who could do the Dio material. But he also went on record to say he liked Joe Lynn Turner as a person, which is a rare thing for Richie to say about anyone.
Turner vocally is nearer to Gillan than to Dio... And Ronnie Romero is a vocal beast.. Even with Dougie White it was a return to more Dio-oriented material.
they talked about JLT doing the 2017 Rainbow shows, but Ritchie decided he needed a more versatile voice who could do Gillan, Dio and JLT. So Ronnie Romero came aboard.
@@derhandtrommler Yeah, and Ronnie Romero came from a Rainbow Tribute Band, so He could do all the stuff.... I own the live BluRay with Performances from Bietigheim and Loreley....

Slaves and Masters is my least favourite Purple album, but even I have to admit this is a great show- Turner seems to have fit in with the band better live than in the studio, imo. The whole band is on fire!

3/5 Rainbow Line Up on Stange too. JL Turner is a very good Singer imo.The Slaves and Masters Album is also good. They should had released This Show in full. 👍🤘
I'm pretty sure he has a JHS style Treble Booster built in at some point (a lot of the classic era guys used that as a secret weapon - Richie, Rory Gallagher & Brian May to name 3). He also seriously abuses the pickup selector flicking between the neck & bridge to change tones & do call & response with himself - that might have been what you were seeing
JLT ist sometimes struggling with the Gillan-material, but Ritchie and Jon are in full swing. Love slaves and masters, but understand the doubts of Jon and Roger about the live performances.

Turner doesn't ever seem to do well at covering material that featured other vocalists. He does his own material well, but I never cared for his takes on other eras of DP or Rainbow
Was just an instrumental, Jon Lord probably loved it! I believe that Deep Purple performed another Rainbow instrumental on stage when Deep Purple reformed in 1984!
You have to know you’re in trouble when you record an album, you go on tour to support that album and you open with a song that you didn’t record at all.
JLT did NOT do a great job here with many of the Gillan MKII era songs. I understand how difficult it is for ANY lead singer to do justice to the material of Ian Gillan in his prime as is his DP MKII period, but JLT was straining and barely making some of those Gillan melodies. He also struggled through the vocal/guitar "echoing" segments between he and Ritchie, when they attempted to recreate here those segments that were magical between Blackmore and Gillan.
Of the 5 singers Deep Purple had, Joe Lynn Turner was clearly the one who was least suited to the band. Apart from that, his vocal qualities are quite mediocre.
Slaves and Masters was poor. It was not as good as either Rainbow or Deep Purple separately. I call it a Deep Bow or Rain Purple album, weakest of all the Purple albums. But to be fair Ritchie and JLT are both wearing very realistic wigs😂😂
