In this video I discuss Mac external storage options and how you can save money by not upgrading storage through Apple

If you want fast external media on a Mac, you need to use USB4 , ie Apple Silicon Mx
Apple are a bit vague about it until you get to the actual specs page, but even the lowest M1 Mini supports USB4
So, you need an USB4 enclosure to go beyond 3000 MB/s, as TB3 or TB4 wil only get you 28 Gbps for data, or about 2800 MB/s
Anyone using the Satechi USB4 enclosure : get rid of the plastic covers as they increase drive temperature (small surprise there ...)

@@Wannes_ appreciate the info. I had them on when I ran this test I think. Also I didn’t even add the cooling pad which I should have done. I could have probably gotten faster than I did

You did a huge research and yet you chose wrong. Do better next time. You won’t get the Crucial X10Pro speeds on a Mac because no Mac supports USB 3.2 Gen2 2x2. Apple decided to skip it because this standard is optional. So choosing X10Pro you’ll get the same speeds as X9Pro, no more

I didn’t choose that. I built a custom enclosure, but if what you are saying is true then that applies to those who are watching and they should not upgrade
Is this based on hardware limitations are do you have proof these speeds are indeed limited in the form of a video showing this or an article?

@@UrbanBDKNY okay, maybe you didn’t choose it but you’re recommending it. As for proof, just look at the supported USB standards on any Mac. And yes, I tried, you won’t get more than 1000mb/s with X10Pro on a Mac

@@Novvvus well I appreciate the info. I ll add a note in my description. Curious if the M4 Macs will have the same limitations. I would think not. I hope not

@@UrbanBDKNY all of us are hoping for it since M1. Apple obviously won’t support USB 3.2 Gen2 2x2. It’s just USB 3.1 Gen2 and 4.0. So choose external SSDs accordingly

This was a great video, thank you for sharing. I will get one of these for my Ubuntu installation and will boot from it for development purposes.

Any cheap USB 3.1 , 10Gbps enclosure will give you around 1000 MB/s
The Samsung T7 and the like are definitely not the best nor cheapest options there
SSD speed is not very important (unless you want to repurpose it in a faster system later on) as USB 3.1 is the limiting factor
I built my own out of an Orico 10Gbps alu enclosure + a Lexar SSD for 60€ total when the T7 was close to 100€ for 1TB
Prices have gone up here, the T7 @ 1TB being 147€ now
The Orico 10 Gbps enclosure is now 24€
Name brand SSDs around 3000MB/s (and faster) are available for 50€ to 70€ for 1TB, the Lexar is 60€ nowadays
So one can easily save up to half the price on a Samsung T7
More when going for Chinese silly name brands
And you have a reusable / replaceable enclosure and SSD if anything fails
    Good luck prying a T7 open ...
