Ileana Cotrubas was such a special singer. So perfect in the role of Illia- voice , musicality , expression. This is both wonderfully human and heavenly.
I am utterly ravished by the lovely singing of Ileana Cotrubas, the beauty of her voice and her stage presence. She is an outstanding interpreter of Mozart and, along with Frederica von Stade and Luciano Pavarotti, graces this excellent Metropolitan Opera production of Idomeneo. Ideal and lavish casting.
The Ponnelle Met production is a bit slow; I felt it could have more energy with a good ballet corp (the whole opera is performed unfinished without it), or at least a more energetic chorus (they mostly just stand around.), but unfortunately not. Pavarotti's acting skills are sub-par, and I wasn't a fan of von Stade's performance. But the production was saved by Pavarotti's and Conturbas's phenomenally lovely and charming voices, and Behrens's stunning performance as Elettra.
